World-famous and former KBEST 95 morning man, Chuck Buell flix some news:

Chuck writes, “I am pleased, and honored, to share with you that a film in which I was asked to provide a movie trailer type voice throughout and within the film itself has been selected to be shown at this year’s prestigious “2008 Cannes Film Festival” in France!”

The voice-over artist adds, “The film was written and directed by an exciting and promising young San Diego film maker, Michael Gallagher, and is a very creative comedy about U.S. troops searching for a large hidden plug that has been pulled resulting in a slow deflation of the planet Earth! The film is appropriately titled, “Flattest!””

With the film fest in full mode, the big screen feature will run through the 24th at the American Pavilion Short Film Center.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me,” Chuck writes, “I’m going to go have some popcorn!”

Welcome to SDRadio for Thursday, April 24, 2008

This report in stereo, where available.

bbs.jpgIf it relates to the business, Russ T. Nailz, and Sully are talking about it on the air. With their topical, laid back, and comic commentary of goings on in the business world, Sully and Russ ‘T’ aren’t only thinking outside the box-they didn’t even know there was a box! Especially with visits from the likes of Gazillionaire Kris Skrinak, The Finance Babe, The Mortgage Dude and Ball Boy Kyle!! Add live call-ins from educated listeners of all ages, live in-studio guests, and even local rock n’ roll bands, and you’ve got the most engaging virtual bar room on the internet radio dial. So pull up a bar stool, pour a tall frosty one with the boys weekdays on the Business TalkRadio Network.

Russ is a San Diego based comedian and has been heard on 91X. Sully gained air experience at 103.7 The Planet. Sully tells SDRadio that the show is heard coast to coast and can be heard locally on KCEO via the Business Talk Radio network. Visit their web site at BigBizShow.com.

Two weeks ago, Scott Fybush and I journeyed to Baja on a romp through legendary radio and television antennas. Scott noted that the call letters for 690 AM have changed to XEWW. Fred Cantu, a television journalist based in Austin, Texas writes, “The XEWW calls have some history. That was the call for the shortwave repeater of XEW, the W flagship in Mexico City. XEW no longer transmits on shortwave.”

Neil Ross writes about Bob Collins. The legendary radio host is being inducted into the radio hall of fame. “Bob did afternoons on KCBQ in ‘69 and ‘70. Those were the days when KCBQ had an unheard of $10,000 cash-call contest. 20.jpgThat combined with Bob’s engaging wit and energy meant in some rating periods he would get better than a thirty share! Of course, he’s better known for the twenty plus years he spent on WGN Chicago, the last ten or so in morning drive.”

Mark Larson adds a photo: The picture is a “1984 blast from the past, the start of our friendship that lasted until his tragic plane accident.” Mark adds, he almost got me to move to WGN …three times over the years!

San Diego’s newest music station is streaming on-line. Sample the Walrus at WalrusFM.com.

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels today. See YOU on the radio and here for breaking news!

105.7 FM, The Walrus has signed on the air and Bob Harlow is the program director. Starting May 5, Dave Mason handles the morning show. He was last heard on SignOn Radio, and previously the lead anchor at KOGO. He was best known as the morning host at Kool 99.3.

Leo Laporte gets technical on KOGO every Sunday afternoon starting at noon. The syndicated host is heard nationwide on XM satellite and also on the flagship station of KFI. Leo is a hands-on tech adviser and has one of the largest fan-base for podcasts.

SignOn Radio continues with newspaper staff. The line up starts at noon and is streamed world-wide from SignOnSanDiego.com. The leading paper in the region is also feeling the effect of the cutbacks in advertisement. In the last six months, the newspaper has made buy outs to staff members. In the opinion section of Monday’s paper, newspaper editor Karin Winner wrote about the diminishing expectations of the paper. “We can’t be a newspaper of record anymore.” That leaves a wide gap in coverage if that is the paper’s position. See the report at the UT’s site.

San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson is the master of ceremonies at the Christian Management Association’s annual convention in Dallas, Texas (this Sunday through Thursday). The event is the largest of its kind, with over 2,000 attendees representing some of the most influential ministries (World Vision and others) and mega-churches, as well as key successful businesses across the U.S. He’ll be hosting a variety of events each day, featuring key speakers including management guru Ken Blanchard and others.

Sitting in on his 5-9AM morning show on 1700AM, New York Myke Shelby today.

The Blonde On Duty, Bobbie Hill is part of the lineup on Animal Radio. Bobbie, who can be heard on classic rock 101.5 KGB has drawing power. Check her art out at BlondeOnDuty.com. A portion of the sale will go to animal welfare groups.

SDRadio note: photos return later in the week as the server is being updated and some behind the scenes work is finished up. Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels. See YOU on the radio today and here later in the broadcast week!

Update: The Radio Hall Of Fame has announced its selection for the nominees. Included: Dick Whittinghill, primarily based at KMPC in Los Angeles. WGN’s Bob Collins. Uncle Bobby was in the San Diego market.

Other nominees include: Art Bell for his overnight show Coast To Coast AM. Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Bob Costas, Charlie Tuna (KCBQ), and Gary Burbank.

See Radio Hall Of Fame’s web site for more info.
                  ~~
Marlyn Hyder, the news anchor was heard on SignOn Radio Tuesday during the mid-day shift. This Friday, she joins her former co-worker, Mark Larson on San Diego AM 1700.

She is slated to join Mark in the 8 a.m., hour.

Also: The station on the extreme right side of the dial (and presenting all sides of the political spectrum) has entered an exclusive news partnership with the San Diego Business Journal. The agreement will expand 1700’s local business coverage and build both entities website content. The Journal’s reporters will also be heard occasionally on the new 1700AM and there will be more of a presence for the station in the newspaper, along with 24/7 info online. The companies also partner for several major local events throughout the year. In recent months, 1700AM has also added NBC Radio and CNN news to its information arsenal.

On the Mark: The morning host at the station, Mark Larson also expands his television horizons. As he stepped into the KUSI news booth last week, he continues to give local political commentary for the local news station. As the election year banter piles it deeper in the tube (and in high-def, too), expect Mark to even the swill out and set the record straight.
                  ~~
Disposed host at KFI, John Ziegler will return to the radio next week. In an email, John stated that he’ll have a two hour show next week, heard in San Diego on AM 540. More details soon.
                  ~~
Rob Worden checks in about his move north: ” I will be heading back to Sacramento and back to Clear Channel Radio. I will start there the middle of next week as their Director of Sales. Julie and I are thrilled to be headed home!” Rob is having a no-host get together next Monday.
                  ~~
Woody & Wilcox got on the wrong side of the microphone. The former San Diego hosts call Alaska home. They took a local slang and twisted — and caused an outrage from local native Indian groups to the state, all calling for their ouster. The station, Fox 105 FM, suspended the duo for the time being. In turn, Woody and Wilcox will donate their salary to local Alaska charities.

The Clear Channel Communications station posted an apology and also said, ” We are confident that what was said was an isolated incident, and it in no way reflects the views of KBFX station personnel.”

See the local paper for more details.

                      105.7 hits with “The Walrus”

                      walrus_header.jpg

John Lynch announced this morning at BCA:

“I am pleased to announce that this morning the Broadcast Company of the Americas launched a new exciting format on its 105.7 FM.

With the advent of 1090 AM going digital with HD radio, we find it redundant to offer XX Sports Radio on both 1090 AM and 105.7 FM.

After conducting extensive research, BCA identified a hits based format that will be a formidable competitor.

The Walrus 105.7 This morning at 9am, BCA launched “105.7, The Walrus”

The Walrus will feature the best of the San Diego Classic Hits combined with a contemporary, fun, music intensive presentation. Because the demographics are complimentary, the Padres will continue to be carried on both 1090 and 105.7. The Walrus will unfold over the air over the next two weeks as the music–only presentation will add personalities and features with the final Walrus ready to waddle on in early May.

As we all know, times are challenging right now. Many broadcast companies have engaged in layoffs, hiring freezes, and taken other “draconian” measures to cut expenses. At BCA, we are confident that the challenging times yield great opportunity. We want to present an exciting new venue for our partners and advertisers, to help overcome the challenges of the economy.

In addition to the on-air presentation of the Walrus, BCA will offer some exciting web-based opportunities to provide great value for our advertisers.

Finally, in both Noble Broadcast and BCA’s history, our companies have been trailblazers in terms of creating and presenting formats that have been top rated in their markets.

Stations such as KBCO, 91X, THE End, Magic 102, XTRA Sports, XX Sports Radio, and many others have been market and format leaders. BCA looks forward to adding the Walrus to this prestigious list of some of the most successful stations ever.

                      President and CEO

Top 40 Comes to KCBQ San Diego!

                      Top 40 Comes to KCBQ

                      by David Leonard

bartell.gifBartell is probably the best known ownership name associated with KCBQ, as well they should. The Bartell family brought the Top 40 format to KCBQ. Prior to 1955, the focus was to acquire and maintain a network affiliation to provide stable programming and stable income. That did not translate into high ratings. Up to this time, KCBQ was overwhelmed by KFSD and KSDO, and even stations based in Los Angeles. (Pictured: Mel Ralph Evans, Rosa Bartell Evans, and Gerald Bartell)

The Bartell family of Milwaukee, WI consisted of brothers Gerald, Mel, David, Lee, and their sister Rosa Evans. Under Lee’s leadership, the family assembled resources to license WEXT Milwaukee in 1947. The family founded the Bartell Group in 1950, took WEXT off the air, and then licensed WOKY. Over time, they would acquire stations in small markets, develop successful Top 40 programming, then sell them for stations in larger markets. KCBQ was a large market station that the Bartell Group acquired in 1955.

kcbq_bartell_bros.jpgLee Bartell created an ownership presence at the station as General Manager. This was an era when radio was losing audience and revenue to television. The first change was to drop the network affiliation and program KCBQ with a Top 40 format. Allan Heacock was installed as Program Director. Ernie Meyers could not stand the new format and opted to move to television. Harry Martin, (the ‘Happy Hare’ name would come later), convinced Bartell that he had experience with the format and he stayed. Jack Vincent remained as an engineer, but Bartell realized that Jack could handle an on-air shift as well. They raided KSDO to get the popular Don Howard. Others came from Bartell stations elsewhere or started their career in radio, as did young Scotty Day. With two or three exceptions, the air talent remained intact until 1965. KCBQ was nominally the top rated station from 1955 to 1965 in San Diego. (Pictured: Gerald, Mel, Lee, and David Bartell.)

kcbq_murphy.jpg(Pictured: Tom Murphy in the KCBQ window.) The studio was relocated to 5th and Ash in 1957, and the transmitter was established in Santee once the FCC granted approval for a 50,000 watt daytime, 5000 watt night time signal. KCBQ could have fared better with 10,000 day/night signal, since the 50,000 watts was oriented westerly to the Pacific Ocean. But Lee Bartell wanted bragging rights with a 50,000 watt station. (Extra bonus points if you know Tom’s on-air name.)

Bill Drake and Gene Chenault’s Boss Radio format caught on in San Diego during 1965, leaving KCBQ sounding aged and clumsy. The veteran staff was released as numerous staff changes occurred throughout the year. They attempted to steal the rights to the one and only San Diego Beatles concert in August, but the ratings plummeted over the next few years. Lee was forced by his family to leave his General Manager position in 1967, and Bartell Media was sold to Down Communications in 1968, (with the Bartell family retaining a management role in radio operations).

kcbq_allyn_lobby.jpgBy this time, the Bartell family became less interested in radio as their operations became more diversified. Lee took a particular interest in hotel development, including the Circle 8 Hotel in Mission Valley as an early project. The family still owns seven hotels in the San Diego area that include Humphries Half Moon Inn & Suites on Shelter Island and the Sheraton Hotel in La Jolla, and five restaurants. The Bartell name was associated with KCBQ management through 1977. The station was then shuffled through a number of ownership portfolios that would eventually lead to poor ratings and the demise of the Top 40 format in 1979. In 1990, a successful reunion of air personalities, office staff, and even Lee Bartell was held at the Marriott Hotel in Mission Valley. Video of that reunion is available through California Aircheck. The late Phil Flowers aired a history of the station during the early 2000’s that included recorded airchecks, live and recorded interviews, and commentary. There was even a book written about KCBQ and other Top 40 San Diego stations in 2004. The Top 40 glory days of KCBQ are now long gone, but the connection people feel with the station, whether as en employee or as a listener, remain strong. Here’s to you, KCBQ! (Pictured: Gary Allyn in the KCBQ lobby.)

Welcome to SDRadio for Monday, April 14, 2008

All tower photos © 2008, SDRadio (Chris Carmichael).

xetv_gate.jpgLast Thursday, photo-journalist and writer Scott Fybush along with myself and two other radio tower enthusiast journeyed to Baja to discover some great radio and TV history for the region.

The first stop was the legendary XETV, and XEWT complex on top of Mount San Antonio. That is the multi-antenna topped mountain just south of the San Ysidro crossing. after a short 20 minute drive through the streets of Tijuana, Gary Stigall, the Director of Engineering for Bay City Television showed us the pristine transmitter and master control for the FOX TV outlet.

Near the crest of the hill, the XETV gate greets visitors. The gates open up to the compound, that also houses Canal 12, the main Televisa station in Baja. The mountain top has a complex of sound stages, studios, production facilities, and various buildings of transmitters. Complete with a full-time news department, Canal 12 is the number one Spanish-language station in the area. Part of the television programming is also shipped across Mexico and Latin America. Canal 12 productions have been seen the world over and continue to be noted for their standards of excellence.

xetv_camera.jpgXETV’s over the air signal on Channel 6 is on the left, and the digital signal is on the right. Interesting note is that on the U.S. side of the border, full-power analog stations will sign off and be fully digital in February 2009. XETV will, for the time, be broadcasting in analog and digital over the air. Locally on cable and on satellite, XETV’s programming is taken direct from the Ronson Road studios in Kearney Mesa.

The signal from the San Diego studios are sent to Mexico via a fiber link. The broadcast group has backup plans in case of an outage. In the XETV portion of the complex, one of the original Dumont television cameras is a time-mark from the early broadcast days. The station 91x_tower.jpgsigned on in 1953. For a time, live programming, targeted for the San Diego English audience was produced live in Tijuana. (Click on the camera photo for a larger size.)

On the north side of the hill, and facing the border and points north, is XETRA-FM. The photo shows the tower on the right. Note the “Y” black line, near the tree level. That is a one-bay aux antenna for the alternative station. The FMer’s 100,000 watt signal throws a powerful punch north. The far left tower is XHAS-TV Telemundo 33. The background to the horizon is San Diego county. Engineers from Televisa have said that on clear days — such as those experienced over the weekend — the San Bernardino snow-capped mountains stand out.

Next on the stop was the famous 690 towers just south of Rosarita. The seven tower complex is just east of the libre and toll road, north of the famous ‘lobster village.’

Noted: The call letters announced on the ID had 690’s call letters as XEWW, as the “W” Radio station serving Tijuana, San Diego, and Los Angeles. The 77-thousand watt station is one of the most powerful stations in North America. LA based engineer David Eduardo confirms the call letters are XEWW, and dropped the legendary XETRA-AM.

xeprs_sign.jpgNorth of the sea resort town of Rosarita is the famous 1090 three antenna farm of XEPRS-AM. The 50,000 watt station is the current home of XX Sports Radio. There is much radio history in the fields around the broadcast towers. The station’s entrance is marked by a very aged sign.

1090_towers.jpgThis is the same area where Wolfman Jack howled his top-40 radio show from as XERB. The border blaster station was part of the allure of American Graffiti. Known as The Soul Express, Wolfman Jack’s radio station earned the popular host $50,000 a month. (Click on the photo for a larger version.)

Today, the station continues to be part of the region’s history as it is the home of the Padres baseball, and sports programming from John Lynch’s Broadcast Company of the Americas.

xekam.jpgNoted: The one stick antenna next to the Pacific Ocean just north of Puerto Nuevo is AM 1030 XESDD, La Tremenda. The station is a Regional Mexican radio station that serves the Ensenada.

North of Rosarita and the 1090 towers is a the home of 950 XEKAM, Radio Formula AM. (Pictured above) The station serves the Baja and Southern California area with 20,000 watts during the day.

Near the north end of the toll road (just south of the toll plaza) is the home of AM 540 XESURF. Operated by Saul Levine’s Mount Wilson Broadcasting, the station offers news and talk programming featuring Michael Jackson, the legendary talk show host, John Ziegler’s commentary, Lars Larson, and Alan Colmes. Weekend programming includes two hours of Big Ed Schultz.

More photos from the trip, later in the broadcast month.

                        ~~

Delana Bennett has a million reasons why she loves San Diego. She was picked to be on the national broadcast of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Her two day total earned her a cool $1,000!!

This is the last week of SignOn Radio from the Union-Tribune. As cost cutting will take the on-line station — off — until the final microphone goes silent on Friday, it’s full programming ahead. Tomorrow, it’s a rare chance to hear Marilyn Hyder filling in for Ken Copper at 11 a.m. Marilyn, known for her expert news views at KOGO has been on the beach since the entire chain when on a cost-cutting diet. (or slashing)

She’ll team up with her friend Clark Anthony. They worked together previously at KFMB.

geradio.jpgIndustry notes: HDRadio has been a disappointment. Only about a quarter of radio listeners know what the new technology is, and the radio penetration is less than one percent. In San Diego, the situation is further clouded with terrain problems further away from the transmitter base. In theory, HDRadio should be available to 80-percent of the analog area. Actually, in San Diego county, the terrain coverage makes it worse because of the hills and valleys roads transverse and where radios area.

This week as NAB’s annual show in Las Vegas begins, the talk is giving FM stations in HD more power to push the hybrid digital signal out. That complicates adjacent channels or short-spaced stations common in Southern California.

As the HDRadio alliance promotes the new transmission standard, the public isn’t buying because the radios are pricey, the reception iffy, and the promotion cloudy. Stay Digitally Tuned.

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your broadcast day. See YOU on the radio today and here later in the broadcast week. Stay Tuned, things are gonna change!

SignOn Radio prepares to Sign Off

sosd-radio-mason.jpgSign On Radio made a promise when first launched from the Union-Tribune building. “The combination of entertainment, information and news is unparalleled in the radio industry. Our goal is to inform and entertain - bringing you not only the newsmakers but the keen analysis of the journalists who cover them. And when we’re not talking, we’re playing the best from San Diego musicians.”

Starting at 7 a.m., Dave Mason (pictured) kicks it off with the Daily Briefing. He is joined in studio with Drew Schlosberg and Anne Maclachlan. The two hour show was similar to the KOGO newscast that Dave anchored prior the the station’s move.

SignOn Radio proclaimed the station as a unique one. “No other radio station, public or otherwise, can come close to the kind of local coverage SignOn Radio can provide. Our studios are located just a few yards from the newsroom of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

sosd-radio-clark-cop.jpgIt did that and exceeded by tapping the vast back ground of the paper, but also bringing on board some talented folks that were known for radio. Dave Mason, Charlie & Harrigan, Ken Copper, Clark Anthony, and a few other radio icons joined the internet streaming station.

Ken and Clark’s (pictured) 11 a.m. show was more than a bridge to the afternoon programming, it is a look at the heart beat of the county. Using their vast background as radio journalists (and television for Clark), they left no corner of the county unturned. Topical and lively, their show remains a standout in the broadcast day at SignOn Radio. They had more U-T staffers on the mic offering insight to Karla Peterson, Neil Logan and Steve Breen. Their show, along with the Morning Briefing, will be missed.

sosd-radio-c-h.jpgAlso adding to the fun was Charlie & Harrigan (pictured) coming to the ‘net from a secret North County location. Like their former radio shows, always entertaining and fun to hear.

Not right, nor left, but a realistic look at San Diego and beyond, SignOn Radio had exceeded where local AM radio failed: a local look with local talent that made it fun and entertainment.

San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson will record his 50th broadcast for radio in Iraq. His longtime partnership with Marine Chaplains resulted in a daily Monday through Friday special broadcast on the “Voice in the Wilderness” network, heard on US military bases in Iraq.

The show features highlights of Mark’s new 1700AM talk show and special segments done exclusively for members of the military, airing twice a day on the unique network. The program began airing on February 25, and is recorded a few weeks in advance. He remains the only San Diego radio personality who has gone “on site” to cover both Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s also broadcast from Tibet, Southeast Asia and (multiple times) from China. He’s headed back there this fall. More info: www.marklarson.com.

tibet.pngI asked Mark about his broad -cast from Tibet where recent political activity has been in the news. Mark writes he was there in “1998.. when only 2,000 foreigners were allowed in annually that was the in the second year of my involvement with Heart To Heart International.”

The photo is from Mark’s collection. “(This is the ) Potala Palace I took from the roof of Johkang Temple, current site of the uprisings.” On his vast world-wide travels, “Tibet and Afghanistan are still the most amazing places I’ve visited.”

Mark adds, “We took a couple million bucks on aid with us and I recorded special programs for H2H on-site… that led to more programs in China.. and I’ve been a member of their National Board of Directors for several years..also their Global Leadership Council.” That is the same group that includes former Kansas senator Bob Dole.

Mark said, “I have a real heart for the Chinese people, and especially those facing problems in Tibet. The latest uprisings have been in places I know quite well. Been there.” Not one to stay in one place very long, Mark has a trip planned. He said that he is “taking my 27 year old son with me to China this fall.”

SDRadio note: The photo of John McCain and Mark Larson that was published last week, was taken by Paul Nestor.
