San Diego Jack FM continues to make strides in the market. After Star 100.7 had its good-bye and the Jack format took hold, there was a lot of speculation that the format would not succeed. In the Summer book, in the 25-54 age group, Monique & Man gained from a 2.5-3.0 in Summer. Tracy Johnson wrote that the show (is)….growing every month, just as we had hoped/expected. Not whwere we want it yet, nor where it’s going to be…but growing SOLIDLY.
Tracy adds, “In overall 25-54, Jack has better ratings in this summer book than in the summer 2005 book WITH JEFF & JER in the morning in all dayparts EXCEPT morning (obvious). WE have a 3.7 share, which is ½ point from being #2 in the market. We’re VERY happy.
Here’s something interesting: Jack is beating KGB in every day part except mornings.
Tracy adds on the Jack website: “Jack’s ratings are doing very well, and we’re really excited about our momentum and gains we are making every month. It’s kind of funny, because EVERY station will tell you how well they are doing, and that they are #1. Jack is NOT #1 in San Diego overall, and there are statistical “wobbles” in all surveys like this, but we’re very happy with the ratings right now. So far, Jack has continued to grow in the midday (10am-3pm), afternoon (3pm-7pm) and weekend (Sat-Sun) time periods. The morning time slot (6-10am) is showing tremendous growth recently (Mornings are the most competitive time period and the most difficult to grow–and it takes time for new personalities to become known) and evenings are growing, but more slowly than the other time periods.”
See more at SanDiegoJack.
Mark Larson is always right in the middle of things at KOGO and when in Washington — he’s never left out of things either. During last week’s broadcast from the White House, Mark was one of the four tapped by CNN to appear with Larry King.
Tomorrow night it is one of the most anticipated shows each year on Coast To Coast AM. Art Bell takes to the mic and host his annual Ghost To Ghost AM. This year, Art is live from the Phillipines. Hear all the spooktacular details on KOGO-AM, KFI, and also on XM Radio channel 165. If you have a good story, share it with Art! Details at the Coast To Coast AM’s website.
Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels today. Congratulations winners in the San Diego Press Club’s awards. See YOU on the radio today — and here later this broadcast week!!!

The GelderHead Thought of the Day: Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be. ~Abraham Lincoln.
I’m disappointed about HDRadio. Sure, it sounds nice, and can offers alternative programming on the multicast channels. Being a North County resident, most of the time I either point my receiving antenna south for San Diego stations or north for the la LA.
HDRadio has not arrived in style for the 78-corridor. San Diego is blessed with beautiful weather — and terrain. That’s the stop in FM HDRadio on my ‘new fangled’ radio. Stationary, it’s killer sound. Mobile in my car — it’s a nightmare mush. I cannot keep KGB’s offering of Dave, Shelly, & Chainsaw when driving. Likewise, KPBS‘ Groove Salad isn’t.
It is not that the stations are broadcasting wrong — or my receiver isn’t up to standards. HDRadio’s downfall for those outside of the city grade signal is spotty reception. Like its counterpart on TV, either you’re tuned — or you are not. South of Encinitas and Poway, most of San Diego’s FM HDRadio’s offerings are perfect. That demark line is where most city grade signals for San Diego stations from Mount Soledad (noting KGB’s is near KGTV Channel 10). The digital signal demands more.
I’m also disappointed in the promotion of HDRadio by stations in the market. I have only found one big box store — still — that knows HDRadio does NOT require a subscription. That is, of course, if you can find an HDRadio on the shelf. One national chain has yet to fill the county stores with HDRadio. Sales people will tell you to visit the on-line site — where it directs you to visit the store to ear witness the “fun.”
It is still a Stay Tuned item.

Blazin’ 98.9 has dumped a majority of on- and off-air staff. Officially know as XHMOR-FM, the street buzz consist of a format shift to compete with Channel 933 and Z90. LARadio.com report that charges of payola and illegal activities.
Operations Manager Lee Cornell told AllAccess.com, “The radio station has to be broader and more mainstream if it is to accomplish its goals. We plan to be a thorn in the side of Z-90 and CHANNEL 93-3. We can’t do that if we’re a niche like Hip-Hop without the rest of the big hits.”
MEC owner Mario Mayans said, “We’re lifting the level of professionalism for this radio station. We have a big signal in a big market. We intend to continue to serve our audience and our advertisers, but we’re adding to both pools. We’re looking for a PD and an airstaff.”
The station, at 98.9 FM broadcasts at 100,000 watts. The station’s website at Blazin989.com had Under Construction in the afternoon. An early evening check had the station’s website on-line. Stay Tuned.

Gelderhead quote:
KOGO’s traveling man Mark Larson hits the tarmac after his show today — that’s after he has guests that include Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Senator George McGovern and Dr. James Dobson. Mark writes: “Now that’s a line up!”
Tomorrow, Mark brings his microphone to the White House in Washington: “I’ll be joined by special newsmaker guests and political insiders with the latest on the critical stakes in the coming election. Prior to the show I’ll be spending much of the morning at the Pentagon.”
Hear Mark starting at noon on KOGO or from the website.
Also, he recommendes the new movie Flags of Our Fathers: “Very powerful, and deserving of bigger box office than it’s getting so far this weekend. Very true to the book by James Bradley and in its depictions of the battle for Iwo Jima. Of course director Clint Eastwood can’t resist some PC applications and spin (and there have been complaints about not enough African-Americans in the film.. there were 900 in the battles), but the personal stories and images are haunting and deeply moving.”
Mark adds: “When Bradley’s book was first released a few years ago he was a guest on my show, discussing why the “Greatest Generation” is so reticent in discussing their experiences in World War II. See the film.. and read the book. Well worth it.” Mark is in the middle of the KOGO lineup from noon-to-3 p.m., and tells me he is always right.
Kelly Cole was honored in September for role as music director at the smooth jazz station. The efforts are paying off. The entire KiFM team made the station as the most listened to station in the summer book. This is the third consecutive year for Kelly to receive the honors.
KFI’s morning mouth, Bill Handel was featured in yesterday’s LA Times. Read it by by clicking here.
Noted: Clear Channel Communications, the owner of KOGO, Star 94.1, Channel 933, KGB, and others … has pulled off-shore listening to their streaming stations. If you are outside of Canada and the U.S., your IP (or computer) address will be blocked from hearing their streams. The rational, according their headquarters, is that the expense of sending the stream overseas is too expensive.
Country on 540: In case you missed it — 540 AM, operated by LA’s Saul Levine, jumped the country fence early last week. The original plan was to kick it off on Saturday. Saul’s AM brother at 1260 remains adult standards. The signal doesn’t reach San Diego proper at all. The only choice for standards is satellite or cable. Stay Tuned.
91X’s Jennifer White writes about what’s up at the alternative spot: “Lately, you may have noticed this infatuation 91X has with Thursdays. Each of these Thursdays involve someone scoring a free trip to see a major 91X band in another city. It started with Killer Thursday, then Incubus Thursday and most recently Beastie Boys Thursday, sending 91X listener Denise Clark to Las Vegas to see the Beastie Boys at The Joint. Well, we’re doing it again this week, and Thursday on 91X will be called Angels and Airwaves Thursday! You will have to listen Monday to find out the city you can win a trip to see A&A at, but here’s a hint: Tiene un pasaporte?
Also at 91X: Resurrection Sunday is a morning wake up call starting at 6 a.m. Steve West takes you down the memory trail all the way until noon. You never know who will show up — like frequent guest Terri Nunn. She is joined by Steve (left) and radio genious Mike Glickenhaus on the right.
XM Satellite Radio’s exclusive new Oprah & Friends channel, which features around-the-clock original programming from popular “Oprah” personalities, announced the exclusive new channel’s programming line-up of intriguing topics and special guests for the week of October 23 – October 27. A full schedule is below.

Learn to surrender your spirit and allow the God in you to control your actions…this show may change your life!
The Bono of Climate Change

Gayle gets some tips on how she can become more environmentally aware from global warming activist Laurie David, author of “The Solution is You: An Activist’s Guide”.
Eyes on the Road
Whether you’re driving or navigating through life, taking your eyes off the road can not only be detrimental to your health, it can keep you from achieving your goals and cultivating relationships so you can live your best life. Dr. Robin shows us how to keep it between the lanes so we reach our destination in life.
Myths about Money
M.P. Dunleavy is one of the most widely read financial columnists in America. Jean Chatzky welcomes M.P. to the show to debunk the many money myths that exist. How do your beliefs about money keep you from becoming wealthy? What mindset do you need to create abundance? It’s a massive money makeover from top to bottom!

Lear reveals that his father was somewhat of an ‘Archie Bunker’ and tells us his path to being a tireless activist.
How to Have an Affair
You’ve seen books on wedding etiquette and etiquette in the workplace…but can you believe a book on etiquette for extramarital affairs? Would Gayle King approve? Sparks may fly as Gayle interviews the author of the controversial book, “The 50-Mile Rule: Your Guide to Infidelity and Extramarital Etiquette”.
Stop Wasting Time
How much of your life is spent being bogged down in minutia? Dr. Robin says all those wasted moments could be better spent on more important things—like catching up with a dear friend. It’s advice on how to make time for what really matters!
Everything Has a Price
If someone gave you $1,000 would you quit smoking? How much would it take to get you to sell a body part? How does a society get its citizens to stop destructive behavior? Dr. Oz and Dr. Mike Roizen are joined by Nobel Laureate Gary Becker from the University of Chicago for a fascinating discussion on health and public policy. It’s Oz and Roizen at their best!
Before You Tie the Knot
With a divorce rate hovering at 50%, making a marriage work is a daunting task. And money is one of the prime culprits when it comes to breaking up. Jean Chatzky welcomes family law expert Alexander Nirenstein for a frank conversation about getting married…especially those sticky financial issues that we try to avoid. It’s not the most romantic way to say “I Do”, but it could save your marriage!

Vanessa Williams
She’s conquered the music charts, Broadway, TV and motion pictures…and now she’s starring in what could arguably be the season’s hit comedy, “Ugly Betty”. Vanessa Williams is Gayle King’s special guest, to talk about her career, parenting issues, and other stuff that friends talk about.
Never Postpone Joy
Have you put off buying a swimsuit because you wanted to lose weight first? Have you put that dream trip to Paris on hold to wait for the perfect man to be your travel companion? Dr. Robin gives us valuable lessons on living in the moment. Paris will still be there!
Read the Fine Print
Did you know that some toothpaste has peanut oil in it? No big deal…unless you’re allergic to peanuts! What about toilet paper that claims to have 1000 sheets, but really doesn’t? You have to read the fine print when it comes to being an aware consumer. Edgar Dworsky, founder of consumerworld.com, helps Jean Chatzky uncover the many ways we get ripped off. Listen and be a better consumer!

Everybody Plays the Fool
Those words were immortalized by Aaron Neville, who has just released the top-selling debut album in his 40-year-career, “Tell It Like It Is”. A native son of New Orleans, Neville’s dedicated this album of soul classics to the victims of Katrina. He talks with Gayle King about his life, his marriage, and—if we’re lucky—he’ll sing a few tunes with his unmistakable voice.
The Power of a Smile
Smile and the whole world smiles with you…it’s true! Dr. Robin says by smiling at someone, you have the capacity to ignite a chain reaction of other smiles. It’s truly contagious, and how much better than igniting a chain of frowns? Smile and you could make someone’s day!
Free For All Friday!
The gloves are off and the phones are on! The phones will be burning as Jean Chatzky has the answers, the encouragement, and the energy to help you Make Money–Not Excuses.
Nate the Great
Live your best life: Clear the clutter, get rid of the stuff you can’t stand, and create a home that reflects who you really are. Nate Berkus answers your questions and also brings us the popular “what’s your feather?” segment—a feather is something near and dear to us that reminds us of a loved one or favorite memory.

SAN DIEGO - Richard Lederer, the founding co-host of KPBS-FM’s popular weekly language program “A Way with Words,” is retiring at the end of October. Lederer, who announced his retirement during “Morning Edition” today, has been a part of the program since its inception in 1998.
“After eight wonderful years with ‘A Way with Words,’ I have decided to retire as co-host,” said Lederer. “My involvement since the start of the show in 1998 has been one of the best things I have ever done in my life. I am grateful beyond words to the KPBS family for its unstinting support of ‘A Way with Words’ and to our San Diego, Wisconsin, and podcast audiences for their enthusiastic response to our word-happy hour.”
While Lederer is stepping down from the day-to-day duties of hosting the weekly radio program, he will not be completely absent from “A Way with Words.” Lederer has been appointed “verbivore emeritus” and will appear on the program with Martha Barnette from time to time.
“I plan to focus my life more on my writing and public appearances and look forward to a continued involvement as ‘verbivore emeritus’ with ‘A Way with Words,’” Lederer continued. “I am confident that the talented and dedicated team that remains with the program will take ‘A Way with Words’ to new heights.”
In addition, Lederer will remain an integral part of the KPBS family, appearing at events, writing for On Air magazine and helping the public broadcasting station during membership campaigns.
The first new “A Way with Words” program featuring Martha Barnette will air November 18. Martha joined Lederer as the co-host in the fall of 2004.
KPBS is a public service of San Diego State University, serving the region with TV, radio and internet content that is educational as well as entertaining – and free of commercial interruption. KPBS-FM is found at 89.5 in San Diego, and Borrago Springs. KPBS-TV can be viewed at channel 15 over the air and satellite, and on channel 11 on most San Diego cable systems. KPBS-HD is also available over the air and on cable systems in the county.

The GelderHead Thought of the Day: Believe in Universal Timing. ~Unknown

He retired in February and is to be inducted in the Radio Hall of Fame next month, died Tuesday at Norwalk Hospital near his home in Connecticut. As an Alaskan citizen now, we get paid by the state per person in the family so I’ve got to start cranking out the kids. This year EVERY Alaskan citizen got about $1100 (that’s from age 0 to death).
I see the website has just undergone some changes! Looks great. By the way, our website is undergoing some changes too. Soon there will be podcasting and we’re just re-tooling in general…as always www.woodyandwilcox.com.” Chris is joined with Woody at 100.5 The Fox in Anchorage. Chris adds: “The salmon is plentiful and the spinach is pitiful.”
Not Jackin’ with you: Jack FM’s Tracy J has his own blog. “Our game plan is to provide surprises every hour every day. From the songs we play to the listeners on the air to everything that goes on between the songs.
For years (decades, really) radio stations have taken themselves too seriously. Broadcasters over-analyze, over-research and work so hard to make their stations perfect that they remove the fun and surprise from their stations.” Read more at Jack FM.
Thank you for being a part of SDRadio today. More fine tuning and tweaking this weekend on the look and feel — and remember no more annoying log ins to the website. See you on the radio today — and at Bark Park at noon! GO PADRES!

The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: The purpose of a relationship is not to make you happy, it’s to help you grow. ~Unknown
The KGB morning team make another fine movie: The Dean of American Sportscasters, Cookie Chainsaw Randolph may have to change his moniker. The premiere of The Trouble With Money was an addition to the San Diego Film Festival. The 38-minute movie played to a packed house, and reviews of the film have been positive. Bob Costas returns in a role and is joined by G. Gordon Liddy, Russ T. Nailz, along with Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn, and the Dean himself. The DVD will be included in the annual DSC composite that includes the best bits for the year. Look for the entertainment pack to be on sale next month. Money from the sale of the DVD and CD support the Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw Charities and is one of the primary fund of the 12 Days of Christmas
XX Sports continues baseball this week as the San Diego Padres have clinched the Western Division of the National League. Ted Leitner, Jerry Coleman and Tim Flannery will bring the post-season starting tomorrow on 1090 AM and 105.7 FM. (Pictured: Ted Leitner at the XX Sports Studio)
US 95.7 FM Radio adds another voice to the Tony & Kris Morning Show. Listeners will now also wake up to Linda Welby.
An 18-year radio veteran, Welby’s career took her from WERS in Boston to Q102 in Cincinnati before arriving in San Diego a decade ago for a morning gig on 103.7 The Planet. After taking some time to start a family, Welby went back to work at Mix 95.7 and most recently Double XX Sports before accepting the position with KUSS.
Along with vast radio experience, Welby loves performing on camera and stage. She has appeared in numerous stage shows, commercials and was also a member of Comedy Sportz. She performed improvisational comedy at the Majestic theater weekly before taking a break from it all to pursue her greatest accomplishment…giving birth to her two beautiful children. Her television credits include three years as entertainment reporter for the CBS affiliate in Cincinnati, and although she has no medical background of any kind, she once played the part of a nurse on the popular ABC soap opera One Life To Live.
“We’re thrilled to add Linda’s versatile background and a woman’s perspective to the Tony & Kris Morning Show,” said program direct Mike O’Brian, “it’s great fun to hear Linda “hold her own” when interacting with co-hosts Tony Randall and Kris Rochester.”
As a commuter who takes the daily Coaster from Oceanside to Old Town, I was nearly to my stop when the ride came to a hault underneath the 8 Freeway near the station recently. The engineer only had that it was a police action at the station. With cell phone in hand, I called Clear Channel Traffic’s Lupita Ramirez and got the straight scoop: an electronic device with wires found at the kiosk. The station and all commuter bus and train service was stopped. Lupita filled me in on the big picture and I filled her in on the train situation: three trains south bound that were back tracking to Sorrento Valley. Thanks Lupita, you kept nearly 500 passengers on the 7:15 from Oceanside up to speed on the events. (Picture: Lupita with SDRadio at the 2002 Del Mar Preview Party.)
760 KFMB’s Rick Roberts is giving it all away. The morning man has cleaned out the KFMB money vaults and has $1,000 earmarked. Listen to the station to see how to register.
KPBS launched a redesigned website today, featuring a vibrant new appearance, original “Web only” content, enhanced navigation, and a focus on interaction and engagement. It’s safe to say kpbs.org has undergone an extreme makeover.
“When users log onto the new site, they will experience KPBS like never before,” said Deanna Mackey, KPBS Associate General Manager for Marketing, Education and New Media. “From now on, kpbs.org won’t just be a place to find programming information. The new site will be a destination where people come together and interact about what they see and hear on KPBS or any number of issues and trends affecting the San Diego community.”
One of the main goals of the redesign was to extend KPBS’ award winning reputation for TV and radio content to kpbs.org, while taking it a step further by engaging the audience to drive discussion and content through interaction and participation.
Take for example the “Current” section of the new site. Each week, the kpbs.org editorial staff will pose a timely question to a panel of experts or prominent community members. The panelists’ answers will serve as a launching point for reaction, response, debate and discussion. The first “Current” question on the new site is: What role do you think national security should play in the debate over immigration reform?
The site will also feature micro-sites on important issues like immigration and the airport with web only content, audio and video links and research to give users the ability to make their own decisions.
The new kpbs.org site will offer easier navigation as well as enhanced visuals elements and an expanded opinion and commentary section with interactive features. In addition, kpbs.org will have downloadable KPBS Radio news reports and episodes of Full Focus, These Days and A Way with Words - all with the click of a mouse.
The new site will feature a more in-depth kids and family section with online learning tools, links to educational games for kids and information about healthy living, as well as a calendar of cultural, arts and community events.
The site marks a renewed commitment by KPBS to meet the needs of our listeners, members and viewers through changing technology and media.
“The lines between TV, radio and the internet continue to blur,” said Mackey. “With all three media within the KPBS organization, we are in a unique position to embrace the changes that are taking place by offering new and enhanced ways to access KPBS’ programming and content.”
KPBS management reorganized the staff to support the new site. Heading up the New Media Department is Tammy Carpowich, KPBS’ former Director of Communications. The New Media team consists of seven full-time staff members, half of which are devoted to news and editorial content.
KPBS is a public service of San Diego State University, serving the region with TV, radio and Internet content that is educational as well as entertaining – and free of commercial interruption.
Also from KPBS: From best selling author Amy Tan, award winning broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff, and celebrated travel expert, best selling author and television host Rick Steves - the KPBS Lecture Series is bringing a diverse trio of captivating speakers to the San Diego community.
All three events feature question and answer sessions and/or book signings after the lectures, as well as VIP packages, which include premium seating and pre-lecture receptions where guests have the opportunity to meet the featured speakers.
Amy Tan
The series kicks off on Friday, October 27 with author Amy Tan at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla Sherwood Auditorium. Tan is best known for her novel The Joy Luck Club, a New York Times bestseller turned major motion picture in 1993.
Among Tan’s other works are The Kitchen God’s Wife, The Bonesetter’s Daughter, The Hundred Secret Senses, The Opposite of Fate, and two children books, one of which has been made into the PBS children’s television series Sagwa.
Tan will be reading from her latest novel Saving Fish from Drowning, a story that follows a recently deceased fictional socialite and her well-to-do group of friends on a journey from China to Burma. Tan will also talk about her life as a writer, host a question-and-answer session, and sign copies of her new book, which will be available for purchase at the event.
Judy Woodruff
Political commentator and broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff comes to the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Theater on Wednesday, November 15. Woodruff will review the recent election and share her forecast for the 2008 Presidential Election. Woodruff will also talk about her new project Generation Next, an upcoming series on the NewsHour and a PBS documentary (scheduled to air in January 2007), which focuses on the opinions and beliefs of young Americans aged 16 to 25. Following the lecture, Woodruff will answer questions from the audience.
Woodruff’s career in political journalism began in 1977 when she served as White House correspondent for NBC News. From 1983 to 1993 she was the chief Washington correspondent for PBS’ MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and from 1984 to 1990 she anchored PBS’ award-winning weekly documentary series, Frontline with Judy Woodruff. Then, for 12 years, Woodruff served as anchor and senior correspondent for CNN’s Inside Politics. Woodruff has been honored with several awards for her professional achievements and is considered an expert on political forecasting.
Rick Steves
Rick Steves, host and producer of Rick Steves’ Europe on KPBS, and author of 30 best-selling European travel books, comes to the Steven and Mary Birch North Park Theatre on Saturday, December 2.
Steves’ will give a 2-hour talk on the value of travel and essential travel skills. He advocates smart, independent travel and encourages Americans to dive deep into Europe and become “temporary locals.” With 25 years of travel experience, Rick gives lectures that are vital to every European traveler. He helps American travelers connect more intimately with the Europeans — often for a fraction of what mainstream tourists pay. His presentation will include photos from his extensive travels around Europe.
Over the past 15 years, Rick has hosted over 100 travel shows for public television. Rick self-published the first edition of his travel skills book, Europe Through the Back Door, in 1980. He has also written 12 country guidebooks, nine city and regional guides, six phrase books, and co-authored Europe 101: History and Art for Travelers. His Italy guidebook is the bestselling international guidebook in the U.S. In 1999, he tackled a new genre of travel writing with his anecdotal Postcards from Europe, recounting his favorite moments from 25 years of travel.
In addition to his guidebooks, Rick also pens columns for newspapers and magazines, is a contributing writer for ABCNews.com, and is a regular on the op-ed page of USA Today. He appears frequently on television, radio, and the Internet as the leading authority on independent European travel.
The KPBS Lecture Series is supported through a partnership with National University. KPBS also wishes to thank the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the University of San Diego; Warwick’s Bookstore; Guiseppe Catering; and Hawthorne’s Restaurant for their support.
