The [1] GelderHead Thought of the Day: Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be. ~Abraham Lincoln.
I’m disappointed about HDRadio. Sure, it sounds nice, and can offers alternative programming on the multicast channels. Being a North County resident, most of the time I either point my receiving antenna south for San Diego stations or north for the la LA.
HDRadio has not arrived in style for the 78-corridor. San Diego is blessed with beautiful weather — and terrain. That’s the stop in FM HDRadio on my ‘new fangled’ radio. Stationary, it’s killer sound. Mobile in my car — it’s a nightmare mush. I cannot keep KGB’s offering of Dave, Shelly, & Chainsaw when driving. Likewise, KPBS‘ Groove Salad isn’t.
It is not that the stations are broadcasting wrong — or my receiver isn’t up to standards. HDRadio’s downfall for those outside of the city grade signal is spotty reception. Like its counterpart on TV, either you’re tuned — or you are not. South of Encinitas and Poway, most of San Diego’s FM HDRadio’s offerings are perfect. That demark line is where most city grade signals for San Diego stations from Mount Soledad (noting KGB’s is near KGTV Channel 10). The digital signal demands more.
I’m also disappointed in the promotion of HDRadio by stations in the market. I have only found one big box store — still — that knows HDRadio does NOT require a subscription. That is, of course, if you can find an HDRadio on the shelf. One national chain has yet to fill the county stores with HDRadio. Sales people will tell you to visit the on-line site — where it directs you to visit the store to ear witness the “fun.”
It is still a Stay Tuned item.
