AJ Machado, host of Channel 933’s morning show “AJ’s Playhouse,” will hoist himself above IKEA in Mission Valley and live atop a scissor lift “crane” until he collects 60,000 toys for “AJ’s Kids” this holiday season - 10,000 more then what was raised during last year’s event.
The fifth annual “AJ’s Kids Crane,” will kick off Thursday, December 7th at 8am in the parking lot of IKEA in Mission Valley. AJ will eat, sleep (and even go to the bathroom!) on the platform of the crane, until 60,000 toys have been collected for Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. The hospital will present the toys to patients during the holidays and store and distribute throughout the upcoming year.
Local companies are encouraged to set up collection boxes in their offices. Any group toy collections that are delivered will also be acknowledged individually on-air.
Also, this year toy donations may also be made beginning December 7th at any San Diego-area L&L Hawaiian Barbecue Restaurant, official co-sponsor of AJ’s Kids Crane for those who cannot make it out to IKEA in Mission Valley.
“This is a chance to take the generosity that the holidays spark in people, and make it last year-round,” said AJ Machado. “These toys will be distributed to deserving kids during the next 12 months.”

Even a real fur coat may not be enough to warm San Diego area pets during the cold winter nights. The animal experts at Helen Woodward Animal Center say that, with a few precautions, you can keep your pets healthy, safe, and warm.
HWAC spokesman John Van Zante says, “Too many people think that their pets are meant to be outdoors. They may have been true many years ago, but we’ve domesticated them and they rely on us for food, shelter, and warmth.”
Helen Woodward Animal Center believes that pets are part of the family. “Do you really want a family member to sleep outdoors when the temperature dips? Probably not. The best way to keep your critters warm is to make sure they’re indoors with you.”
For pets that do sleep outside, make sure that they have shelter and blankets that they can snuggle in. A safe heat source would also help to keep your pet warm.
Even indoor pets can have a hard time when it gets cold. Van Zante says, “If your pet is on the living room floor and it’s shivering from the cold, it needs your help. Most other animal supply stores offer beds, blankets, sweaters, and wraps for pets.”
Some Northern breeds with thicker coats will handle the cold weather better than pets with shorter coats. But, like us, they’ve all become accustomed to the weather in America’s Finest City and will appreciate some protection from the cold.
“Many families will take their pets along when they visit the snow in the higher elevations. While your dog may be running and having fun with you, it may be ignoring its cold paws. Be aware of this and give it breaks to warm up, or just leave it home.”
For more information about pet safety during the cold weather or to adopt a pet of your own during the Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive visit Helen Woodward Animal Center at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe, call 858-756-4117, or log on to www.animalcenter.org.

Two years ago, AM 640 KFI’s 760 foot broadcast tower near the Orange County and LA County line was hit by a private plane. The station is broadcasting from an aux tower from the same site. Plans to rebuild the primary tower have been slow — and the most listened to station in the United States is at a reduced power of 25,000 watts. Clear Channel has agreed to reduce the tower to about 650 feet and install flashing lights on it. The Orange County Register reported that pilots from nearby Fullerton airport had hoped the station would move transmitter locations. Meanwhile the station continues to be at the top of LA, and the Inland Empire ratings. KFI’s reach also extends to San Diego and the station is a factor in the owner’s station count — and has a sizeable audience. Stay Tuned.

Welcome to SDRadio for Monday, November 27! The world-famous GelderHead Thought Of The Day: Everything works out right in the end, if things are not working right, it’s not the end yet. Don’t let it bother you, relax, and keep going. ~Michael C. Muhammed
The Trouble With Money, is a the second feature-length film that has a hidden star on the screen. From the opening to the end, the real star is the San Diego-county back drop. Written and directed by the 101.5 KGB’s Dean of American Sportscasters, Cookie Chainsaw Randolph the real magic is with Patrick Espinosa’s cinematography and lighting. The story is what would you do with a sudden wealth of a million dollars. It all starts with the continuing radio bit featuring Abraham Lincoln, Shelly Dunn’s dog and includes Abromowitz, Chris Boyer and Emily Maguire — and others around the Clear Channel San Diego headquarters. The real star, as indicated, is the San Diego backdrop. Perfect Cookie, worthy to be played multiple times with a cup of steaming coffee and milk.
The movie also includes the director’s cut of The J-K Conspiracy, the 2004 full-length feature. The $16 set includes a CD full of the best bits from this year — and both movies. Perfect for the Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw fan — and the proceeds fund the 12-Days of Christmas. More details on where to buy it or to order on line at 101.5 KGB or The Trouble With Money.
Scott Fybush has published a great radio companion. It’s the 2007 calendar of radio towers — perfect for the radio geek. Scott writes: “This year’s edition features what we think are the finest tower images yet - from the cover image of WCCO Minneapolis all the way to the back-cover centerfold of WBZ in Boston, and from KGO San Francisco to KOIL Omaha to Philadelphia’s famed Roxborough tower farm, captured in a dramatic dusk shot with the lights all aglow.
This sixth annual edition once again contains plenty of historic dates from radio and television history in the Northeast and beyond, and as always, it comes to you shrink-wrapped and shipped first class mail for safe arrival.”
Shipping is fast: I ordered my calender on a Friday and had it hanging by the next Wednesday. Visit Fybush.com for order details.
KPRI, San Diego’s home-grown station, has its fourth CD on sale. Capturing live music in studio or on the stage, the collection should be a staple in the music fan. James Blunt (pictured) has endorsed the project — and sent in a hand-crafted version of High. See the KPRI-FM’s website for more information.

GelderHead Productions, offering professional voice-over services to enhance business communications, announced today that it is spearheading the production of “Holiday Magic 2006…A Gift for Children of All Ages,” a CD featuring music and a holiday tale that will be distributed to sick children at Children’s Hospital San Diego and their siblings. A number of local singers and actors donated their talent for the CD, and funds are currently being solicited to cover the cost of production and ensure as many children as possible receive them.
Jeff Gelder, owner of GelderHead Productions, distributed 1,000 CDs last year; he hopes to exceed that number this year and plans to “play Santa” on December 14, so donations are requested prior to that date. Checks of any denomination should be made out to GelderHead Productions (with Children’s Hospital CD Fund on the memo line) and sent to P.O. Box 3386, San Diego, CA 92163-3386.
The tale on the CD is weaved by Jeffrey the Reindeer and Santa Claus as they make their way from the North Pole to visit the children of San Diego. Along the way they meet Jeffrey’s cousin, Carlito, who lives at the Wild Animal Park. The talent last year was once again remarkable, and included Beth Shelburne of KFMB-TV and Sam Bass of KyXy 96.5fm.
Other performers who generously lent their talent to the CD were award winning author and actress Vanna Bonta (Beastmaster, Hocus Pocus, An American Tale: Fievel Goes West, Beauty and the Beast, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie) extraordinary vocalist Eve Selis, singer and song writer Karl Anthony, vocal talent Beth Wernick, television music composer Sharon Farber, Erin McGraff, producer Dave Blackburn, Jay Kiernan, Kathy Bray, Jacob Mitchell, The Grams, Brittney Doehring, Meredith Chapman, Seth Hartman, Pete Snell, Brianna Cara, Valerie Lieberman, Mark Erwin, AudioGirlProductions, Bobbie Jo Curley, Dov, and recording artist Kerry Michael Warren. Writer Mark Patterson penned the script, and Santa Claus, Carlito, and Jeffrey the Reindeer are played by professional speaker Phillip Tanzilo, voice actor Greg Dehm, and Gelder also of KyXy 96.5fm, respectively.
The first CD was produced four years ago, when Gelder was tasked in a class to come up with a project that would enhance the community and ultimately take on a life of its own. That’s just what has happened, as Gelder now fields many inquiries about the CD as the holiday season approaches.
“This is a labor of love that is received with much joy by children who are unfortunately spending the holiday season in the hospital and their siblings, who often crave attention due to so much being given to the ailing member of their family,” Gelder said. “We appreciate all donations, since the more we raise, the more children will able to receive the CD.”
About GelderHead Productions
GelderHead Productions offers professional voice-over and/or on-camera talent for commercials, narration, and spokesperson or emcee needs. Owner Jeff Gelder believes in giving back to the community, thus he is proud to produce a holiday CD that is distributed free to children who are confined to Children’s Hospital San Diego during the most festive time of the year. For more information, visit GelderHead.com.

Political commentator and broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff comes to the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Theater on Wednesday. The second talk in the 2006 KPBS Lecture Series, Woodruff will review the results from Tuesday’s election and share her forecast for the 2008 Presidential race. Woodruff will also talk about her new project Generation Next, an upcoming PBS documentary, which focuses on the opinions and beliefs of young Americans aged 16 to 25.
KPBS Radio’s recent fall membership drive resulted in $443,703 from 2,914 gifts. The 15-day campaign, which ended on October 27, saw an 8-percent increase in web based membership.
In October 2005, 19 percent of total dollars raised for the fall radio membership campaign came from kpbs.org. This year, 27 percent of pledges generated from the site. KPBS’ newly-renovated website launched in September and offers easier navigation as well as enhanced visual elements and increased user interaction.
The campaign also received another lift when Richard Lederer announced his retirement as co-host of A Way with Words. The announcement was made in the middle of the membership campaign, during Morning Edition. KPBS members responded by pledging gifts totaling nearly $35,000 in just four hours.
KPBS Television membership campaigns are held four times a year in March, June, August and December. KPBS Radio membership campaigns are held two times per year, in April and October. Approximately 39 percent of the total operating budget for KPBS Radio and Television can be attributed to donations from members. Proceeds also come from the following areas: corporate support, special projects, federal funding, San Diego State University support and grants.
KPBS is a broadcast service of San Diego State University, serving the region with TV, radio and Internet content that is educational as well as entertaining-and free of commercial interruption. KPBS-FM is at 89.5, and the TV serves the area on TV 15, and is also available in HD.

Morning co-host Jerry of the Star 94.1 morning show had back surgery recently and is doing his part of the show from home. On the morning show section, see Jerry’s back like never before! Also: It is that time of year when Little Tommy gets restless. He’s hooking up with hoodlum buddies and it’ll be time for the annual breaking in for Christmas. KGB will premiere the new film, The Trouble With Money, and ticket information for the event is at the website. The movie will be available with the DSC’s annual holiday CD/DVD. Money raised from the event will fund the DSC Charities and the 12 days of Christmas. Of course, the DSC is Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn, and the Dean of America’s Sportscasters, Cookie Chainsaw Randolph.
KiFM, San Diego’s smooth jazz station, has started its annual Christmas jazz streaming. See the KiFM.com website. As of yet, no San Diego station has made plans to broadcast Christmas music over the air …. stay tuned.
KPRI’s cleanling out their audio vault and soon, Volume 4 will hit the audio stands. Morning host Madison writes: “Live Tracks Volume 4 is going to sell out fast, so you don’t want to wait.”
The station’s website will have sample tracks soon on thei website at KPRIfm.com. Madison adds: ” And remember… when you give KPRI Live Tracks Volume 4 as a gift, you’re helping San Diego children through an amazing organization called Voices for Children.”
KSDS, San Diego’s true jazz station is about to be a giant. The FCC approved the station at 88.3 FM to increase their power from the present 3,000 watts to a full 30,000 watts. The expected move should happen next year as long as XETV-TV 6 does not object. The FM station and the TV station are near each other in frequency and there is a slight chance that the FM station could cause interference on the Fox station. Viewers would notice a wavy line on their TV sets if there was. KSDS was hoping to move up to this better power for some time.

Welcome to SDRadio for monday, november 6. The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: Most of us let ourselves slide into believing that someday… suddenly we’ll have more time to do what we want or need to do. This passive “waiting until” attitude allows precious time to slip through our fingers like water to disappear forever. ~Dru Scott
The mysteries of ratings: One man’s opinion in the Union-Tribune had Cliff Albert at KOGO in San Diego write: “Not quite fair to paint the talk radio picture in San Diego as needing a makeover because of the Summer book (July-Aug-Sept)…which was heavily impacted by the Padres being in the pennant race all summer and in playoffs at end of season..and lots of cable TV viewing and listening.
The average for the last four ratings periods…(Fall 05 through Summer 06) over last year…shows KOGO is top-rated talk station, overall #4 among all stations during the last year, KFMB is #7, and KLSD and KFI are tied as the third highest rated talk stations and are in the top 20 of all stations.”
Cliff added: “Talk radio is alive and well in San Diego.”
True statement, however there is not much local content outside of KPBS‘ offering during the broadcast day. What I was telling the UT (in an acticle about a possible company move by Clear Channel Communications), was that local news/talk radio needs … more local talk.
Outside of XX Sports 1090/105.7 the politcal spectrum is:
Mornings: KFMB’s Rick Roberts hits the 760 mics at 5 a.m. Stacy Taylor has the progressive view at 6 a.m. on 1360 KLSD. Starting at 9 a.m., outside of The Mikey Show on Rock 105.3 and Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw on 101.5 KGB, San Diego can’t talk locally on the airwaves outside of KPBS-FM.
In fact, Rick Roberts is the only local talk show on weekdays at 760. Likewise, Stacy has the only local programming on KLSD.
KOGO hits the local talk circuit at noon with Mark Larson followed by Roger Hedgecock.
Outside of weekend shows on various commercial AM and FM stations, the local voice is very limited to mornings on two stations — and one outlet in the afternoon on KOGO.
The nation’s seventh largest city has over 40 stations either broadcasting from or targeting the San Diego metro area.
Quality hosts with local issues are doing elsewhere in the country; why not San Diego?
