Two years ago, AM 640 KFI’s 760 foot broadcast tower near the Orange County and LA County line was hit by a private plane. The station is broadcasting from an aux tower from the same site. Plans to rebuild the primary tower have been slow — and the most listened to station in the United States is at a reduced power of 25,000 watts. Clear Channel has agreed to reduce the tower to about 650 feet and install flashing lights on it. The Orange County Register reported that pilots from nearby Fullerton airport had hoped the station would move transmitter locations. Meanwhile the station continues to be at the top of LA, and the Inland Empire ratings. KFI’s reach also extends to San Diego and the station is a factor in the owner’s station count — and has a sizeable audience. Stay Tuned.
