SDRadio contributor Matt Seufert writes about loosing a long time radio friend. “Olin David Steuart aka Dr. Dave worked both in and behind the scenes at Par Broadcasting, Jacor and Clear Channel. You more than likely heard his commericals for Kearny Mesa Ford and Drew Ford of La Mesa as well as many others. He was larger than life, a big, friendly guy who “got it” and was one of the brighter lights at Clear Channel. The last ten years or so he worked in the IT department keeping all the stations online. He and I always worked the early shift and helped the morning “Zoo’s” on air thru many glitches, snafu’s and minor mishaps. For us, it was a labor of love. We were present in the KOGO news room at 5:30am on Sept 11 when the 2nd plane hit and suffice to say, it was a rough day for us all.
The enclosed pictures were taken in Feb. 20001 as we put the final touches on Clear Channel’s mega-google plex on Granite Ridge Drive, a 75,000 sq foot state-of-the-art broadcast center. From the left, Javier Soto, Sam Balasteri, Bill Thompson, Matt Seufert, unknown, Dr. Dave, Kevin Douglass and unknown. I dug these up a little while ago and I know that Dave throughly enjoyed the group photo the best.
These pictures were taken shortly after the completion of a long, hard transition of 3 Clear Channel buildings (Pacific Coast Highway, Kearny Villa Road and Murphy Canyon) into the consolidation of the Granite Ridge Drive facility which is one of the largest radio broadcast centers in existence today (at least in the US.) Dr. Dave was a huge part of this and we are extremely proud of the work that went into it. I had the august privilege and pleasure working alongside of Dr. Dave who was a quick witted, intelligent and big hearted guy. The loss of him to us all, just like Dr. Dave, is larger than life.”
Thank you Matt for sharing.

Starting Tuesday, the Adam Carolla Show takes a new direction with the addition of Danny Bonaduce. Via his Myspace page, Adam wrote about the addition of the new side kick: “Obviously I didn’t choose him because if i had my druthers Dave would be in studio come Jan. 2. But, that being said, I do think he’s a talented radio personality who has a lot to offer, much more than his drunken, menacing TV persona would lead you to believe. He’s done the show a number of times and has done TV shows i’ve been on and our chemistry has always been good. We met a few days back and he understands that it’s not going to be the Danny and Adam show. It will be the Adam Carolla show with Danny Bonaduce and Teresa Strausser.”

He can be heard on weekends on KOGO in San Diego.
As expected, Roger Hedgecock has signed a new contract at Clear Channel and KOGO. The afternoon host and Radio Mayor for San Diego continues in that role, and as fill in host for Rush Limbaugh.

In a move to give San Diego a locally programmed FM talk station, 103.7 FM shed some LA-based shows and will add local prgramming. CBS Radio is announcing “The Dave and Jeff Show,” the latest addition to the live and local programming at San Diego’s KSCF 103.7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The show starts on Tuesday January 2. They will blend a popular mix of sports, humor, celebrity guests and compelling local topics.
Dave Palet and Jeff Dotseth are replacing the Los Angeles based show “Frosty, Heidi and Frank”. (Their show can be heard on 97.1 KLSX or on-line.)
Program Director Jim Daniels is also rumored to be adding more local shows to the line-up at Free FM.
Bringing Dave and Jeff on will help build a San Diego audience and give Tom Leykis a better lead into his 3 p.m. show. This should give Free FM a ratings boost as the Triplets, while successful in the LA market, do not have much of an audience outside of the 2nd largest radio market.
Dave Palet started his radio career in 1993 at XTRA Sports and Jeff Dotseth started in 1991 at KSDO-AM 1130. Dave and Jeff have been doing shows together in San Diego since 1998 at KFMB-AM and most recently afternoons at ESPN 800. They are known for their sense of humor and have always connected with San Diego listeners.
Dave said that, “I’ve been in this crazy business for almost 15 years and have never felt as welcomed as I have from the people at Free FM. I look forward to working with Jeff once again in America’s Finest City. We have worked for strictly sports stations in the past and 103.7 is giving us a great opportunity to broaden our skills and take the radio show to new heights. We have a great team around us with producer Cristy Westfal and Program Director Jim Daniels that will help put the show in elite company.”
The new line up at Free FM also adds Danny Bonaduce as reported here last week. Danny joins the Adam Carolla morning show.
Stay Tuned, more coming!
KSON-AM 1240 will be the new home of “The Soul of San Diego” starting Monday. Stay Tuned!
Roger Hedgecock is on the radio schedule next week at KOGO. He will also be filling in for Rush Limbaugh on the EIB Network on Tuesday and Wednesday. Last week he reported on his show about his personal services contract expiring … and station insiders said Roger was close to having a dea. No official word, it is still a …. stay tuned!

Update: Roger Hedgecock, San Diego’s Radio Mayor, is in his last week with a contract with AM 600 KOGO. Last week Roger said on air that his expires this week. Expect this is a case of shadow boxing — as station insiders have confirmed that a deal with Roger is “close”. Roger filled in for Rush Limbaugh today on the EIB Network.
Roger can be heard weekday afternoons from 3 to 6 p.m. on KOGO.Stay Tuned!
San Diego country giant, KSON-FM is broadcasting in HDRadio. There is no HD2 or HD3 station. The station’s relay in Escondido at 92.1 has not been upgraded at this time.
Will 103.7 Free FM be making a major annoucement today about local programming at the alternative talk station? Stay Tuned!
Thank you for stopping by SDRadio today — full industrial strength coverage resumes next year — see you on the radio this week!

Mega UPDATEs: Free FM shakes up the morning show line up and adds Danny Bonoduce to morning drive with Adam Carolla.
Former sidekick Big Tad writes: “I just want to set the record straight. Dave Dameshek, Jimmy Brusca and myself were all let go from Free- FM. It was an upper management decision. As of right now, I have no clue what kind of direction they are going with the show. I want to say this though….thank you for the support and kind words you have been leaving us on the message board. I wish nothing but the best for Adam and his crew. Hopefully, we will all be able to entertain you again real soon!”
LARadio.com confirms that Danny Bonoduce has signed a contract with Free FM. He’ll start with Adam on Jan. 2.
Danny was previously on KYSR-FM in Los Angeles and on radio in other markets including Chicago, and Phoenix. He also has a successful reality show on VH1 and has been on CSI this season.
Here’s the transcript of Adam’s promotion that has been running on 103.7 Free FM: “Hey, Adam Carolla here kids. Hope you’re enjoying your Christmas holiday; I know I am. I got a hot totty in my hand, sitting in front of a fire, and I’m stuck in traffic. That’s right, I’m so committed to the Christmas holiday, I’m actually drinking a hot totty and have started a fire in the backseat of my car. Why am I ruining your holiday with my nasally drone? I’ll tell you why. I want to give you a heads up. I’m going to be back come January 2nd, ready for action. The first year I was on - that was a dry run. I wasn’t even trying. Heh, I barely broke a sweat. Now, I’m focused, rejuvenated, and high…I mean committed…to giving you the best entertainment a morning show can deliver. So tune in bright and early January 2nd and listen to the Ace Man - the new and improved Ace Man. Because this year, I’m bringing the yuk.”
What line-up changes for San Diego’s Free FM are expected to be announced next week

Jeff Gelder writes about his Holiday CD for Children: “The CD delivery was a great experience. The hospital was nearly at capacity so we spent 2 1/2 hours singing carols to the kids and handing out the Holiday Magic 2006 CD’s.”
The CD is spreading nationwide. Jeff adds: “I’m now sending CD’s to the Children’s Hospitals in Milwaukee, Albuquerque and Orange County. I still need donations if you know anyone who might be interested.”

KOGO overnight host George Noory was in town last weekend for a book signing. He told the radio audience last night that during his plane trip to St. Louis after the event, he wanted to listen to the soundtrack to the Green Mile. He accidently plugged in the headphones to a wrong jack and the entire section got to hear the music until a flight attendent asked him to turn it off. George said that several close by wanted to hear more from the CD ….

You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? Welcome to SDRadio for tuesday, december 19, 2006. The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: It is extraordinary how extraordinary the ordinary person is. ~George S. Will
Surf’s up, and the radio waves have been good. Pencil’s sharpened, here’s a look at some of the best for 2006.
Cliff, Morgan and Tanner have kept San Diego spelling country K S O N. Morgan keeps Cliff and Tanner in line, and the addition of Tori Peck just makes it all better. The county-wide handshake tours are an added bonus, as the stops included Valley Center, Alpine and other points often missed.
Mark traveled more more miles than any host in Southern California. His right-on attitude is for, and about, San Diego. Weekdays starting right at noon
One hour is not enough. On the “pinch-hitter” list for KOGO, Steve’s perspective brings a whole new look to conservative base radio. Sunday evening at 6 p.m. (Note to Cliff: More time needed for Steve. An hour is not enough.)
Need a sports fix? Starting at 5 a.m., Scott and BR tell it to San Diego like it is. Expect more.
AJ and his band of merry men and women have the pulse, the music and the ‘tude. Weekdays mornings.
Madison’s morning show approaches the common sense in us all. Add Gail Newman, and it’s polished, shined, and delivered with a smile every morning. He plays the music and gives the best interviews of anyone in the market on AM or FM.
Sure, he may co-own the station, however Robert has stayed the course and kept it local, live, and you never know what will hit the 102.1 airwaves.
Mike Glickenhaus continues his excellence in radio. He’s guidance has assembled the best crew for the stations in San Diego. Plus, he also lets his decision makers — make the decisions.
San Diego’s only full time newspaper entertainment writer on radio, Randy’s view on the spectrum is worthy of a subscription to the North County paper. Thanks Randy, especially for your footnotes. (Thursday’s edition of the Preview Magazine)

Welcome to SDRadio for monday, december 18, 2006.
It’s almost here: the end of the year for 2006. As I sharpen my pencil, it’s time for the annual “Best Of” for the year.
Jagger and Kristi started out as Stars and then, “Oh My!” headed to 94.1. After a change of stations, they have settled in to the groove of 92.5, where every show is magic. Weekdays from 5 to 10 a.m.
Anyone named Xavier is uber cool. Anyone named X-Man is a music super hero. Good time had by all.
With the Goddess Jennifer White, Cantore, Ruggy, and Rob, remain the best alternative morning show — on an alternative station.
Sam Bass takes over at 9 a.m. and sets up shop for the perfect work companion. Gene Knight continues at 2 and guides you from work to home.
Billy is just on a mission of music, vibes and working you up for the ride home.
It’s the only reason to listen to the station. Sunday evenngs on 103.7.
Honorable Mention: KPBS‘ HD2 station of Groove Salad, and KGB’s HD2 broadcast of Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw. (See noted HDRadio reception.)
Long time readers know my frustration with HDRadio in San Diego county. In North County, home reception is good — listening to multi-stream stations in the car on FM is a train wreck. The new medium remains a Stay Tuned item.
The Mikey Show had a great bounce due to the fact the show is hittin’ all the marks. Rock 105.3 being the home of the Chargers gives a good tie in — but it’s really the show that sales itself. No one would have thought that Mikey and crew would be where they are today.
KPBS-FM continues its fine tradition of news for San Diego. No one else comes close in local coverage — and no one else has Tom Fudge. Expect excellence.
Jeff and Jer at Star 94.1 FM continue to be the spot in the morning. Last Friday’s sock-hop/record spinnin’/party at Tower Records proves that this is one of the few shows to announce a location — and thousands will visit. Little Tommy Sablan, Dr. Laura Cain on current events, and Randy T. Hoag, the entire showgram has a wide swath of listeners.
103.7 Free FM. Mostly LA-based talk shows, no promotion, and that LA-based talk show thing doesn’t sell well with ears in San Diego. CBS Radio effectively killed a format to loose listeners. Outside of Sunday’s GenYU, it’s “Flee FM”. Sorry Tom, you are sounding tired and have the same tired message as yesterday. Yawn. You may talk about it on the radio today (this paragraph) and I’m sure the four or five listeners here will find it amusing.
Jeff Dotseth and Dave Palet are among the missing from the airwaves. The sports experts have a show that speaks to the fans from novice to expert and never insult. Plus, as an added bonus: no dictionary required for listening.

Welcome to SDRadio for Friday, december 15, 2006. The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: “Ever notice that the people who are late are often much jollier than the people who have to wait for them?” ~Unknown.
Chris Cantore and Jennifer White are taking it to the trees this morning. Jennifer writes SDRadio: “91X Cantore in the Morning Pee on a Tree! We hope you and your favorite furry friend join us at Del Mar Christmas Trees between 6 and 10 a.m. Walk your pet through the 91X Forest of Christmas Trees, and whatever tree your pet stops and pees on, you win the tree and the prize! You might win a new Playstation 3, Zune player, tickets to Big Night San Diego for New Years Eve, tickets to the Chargers vs. Chiefs game this Sunday.”
Hear Jennifer put up with Cantore on 91X.
Star 94.1 mid-day Hillary was at the sold-out Jingle Ball. She writes: “One of the funniest parts of the night (for me) was this: when Rick and I went onstage to introduce Chris Daughtry, right before we went up he said to me, “I am going to do something after we thank all our sponsors, it will be funny, so just go with it, ok?” So I said, “Whatever you have, I’m all good.” So we jump onstage, do the bulk of our stage announcement, and then he says to the audience, “We all know Hilary is pregnant, right? Well tonight we are going to announce what she is having! We got a copy of Hilary’s last sonogram picture, and… IT’S A GIRL!!!” …
Jeff and Jer and the morning Showgram at Star 94.1 help close down the famed Tower Records on Sports Arena Blvd. this morning. They will be broadcasting from 6 to 10 a.m.
Also: Little Tommy Sablan will be doing his annual Breaking and Entering next Thursday. Always a tear-jerker and always lending a big helping hand to a needy San Diego county family. Stay Tuned
KFI’s weekend tech guru has indicated he is giving up his on-air radio show. Leo Laporte, the computer expert, indicated in a pod-cast: “I’m probably leaving that KFI show at the end of the month….because I’ve been working 7 days a week for three years.” Leo added in the “broadcast” “… It’s hard to choose any one of the many projects I have to let go. But because the radio show consumes both Saturday and Sunday, it really eats my weekends. I think that’s probably the one that’s going to go. And that’s the thing, you know what, that’s the thing that will suffer is that forced training every week on 20 or 30 topics is great. It keeps my mind going. If I seem dumber next year, you’ll know why. (Security Now podcast Number 69, at 2:30 minutes into the show.) Stay tuned.

Welcome to SDRadio for wednesday, december 13, 2006. The world-famous GelderHead Thought Of The Day: “Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.” - Benjamin Franklin. Visit the GelderHead.
Channel 933’s AJ is just hanging out and waiting for some of his radio fans to drop off a mere 60,000 toys in Mission Valley. The toys will benefit the Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. This year marks the fifth annual “AJ’s Kids Crane.”
AJ writes on the website: “Although I have no children of my own, kids are a huge part of my life.”
The goal of 60,000 toys is impressive and it looks like AJ and the morning crew will exceed the goal.
At right is the Cliff and Company KSON Prognosticating Pooch for this week — “TINKER” is a 10 month old, neutered, male, Shar-Pei/Lab Mix. He is no couch potato! “Tinker” is all-go-paw-er with no energy shortage! Perfect for an energetic family with humans 14 years and older! He Loves people and other dogs, plenty of play time and lots of toys!
The Helen Woodward Animal Center Prognosticating Pooches have enjoyed a 100% adoption rate. Hear the barking excitement today on KSON.
101.5 KGB’s morning show of Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn, and the Dean of American Sportscasters, Cookie Chainsaw Randolph are fullfilling Christmas dreams this week. Continuing through Friday, the DSC are giveaway $1,000 per day to help make Christmas wishes come true. The “12 Days of Christmas” is more than event, it’s a life changing event for some.
The money for the 12 Days of Christmas is from the proceeds of the annual CD “Best Of” the morning team produces and is currently selling. This year’s special double bonus includes a short film called “The Trouble With Money.” The DVD also includes the highly aclaimed movie “The J-K Conspiracies” — and features special commentary by Dave and Cookie throughout both features.
This Friday, the team will invade a video store near the Sports Arena from 11 to 1 — and will sign the movies after feeding you lunch.
The movie will be for sale until mid-January and is also available for shipping on line. See 101.5 KGB’s website for the details.
With Christmas nearly here — hear here! Christmas music can be found (so far) at KyXy, San Diego’s soft rock choice at 96.5. Also, KiFM soothes and smooths the music in at 98.1 FM.
Jeff Gelder is busy helping Santa out this month — and it’s nearly time to deliver this year’s CD. Jeff writes “Holiday Magic 2006…A Gift for Children of All Ages,” a CD featuring music and a holiday tale that will be distributed to sick children at Children’s Hospital San Diego and their siblings. A number of singers and actors donated their talent for the CD, and funds are currently being solicited to cover the cost of production and ensure as many children as possible receive them. “Donations are requested throughout December. Checks of any denomination should be made out to GelderHead Productions (with Children’s Hospital CD Fund on the memo line) and sent to P.O. Box 3386, San Diego, CA 92163-3386, or donate via Paypal at HolidayMagic2006 and click on “Make a Donation.”
It’s almost time to deliver the CD’s to the children at Children’s Hosptial
San Diego. This years talent now includes Sam Bass of KyXy 96.5 and Kimberly King of NBC 7/39.
Next week: The Best Shows In San Diego (you should be listening too), and a look at the market for 2006. See YOU on the radio today and here later in the broadcast week. Thank you for stopping by!
