The World-Famous GelderHead Thought Of The Day: If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn’t brood. I’d type a little faster. - Isaac Asimov

NutsFrom KSON and the Helen Wooward Animal Center: “At left is our Prognosticating Pooch for this week — “HAZELNUT” is a two year old, female, spayed, Doberman Pinscher Mix. Very polite and gentle. Magical and festive, she wants nothing more than a new best friend…YOU! “Hazelnut” knows basic commands and is ready for adoration and lovin’! S ClausJeff Gelder writes about his Holiday CD for Children: “The CD delivery was a great experience. The hospital was nearly at capacity so we spent 2 1/2 hours singing carols to the kids and handing out the Holiday Magic 2006 CD’s.”
The CD is spreading nationwide. Jeff adds: “I’m now sending CD’s to the Children’s Hospitals in Milwaukee, Albuquerque and Orange County. I still need donations if you know anyone who might be interested.”

KOGO overnight host George Noory was in town last weekend for a book signing. He told the radio audience last night that during his plane trip to St. Louis after the event, he wanted to listen to the soundtrack to the Green Mile. He accidently plugged in the headphones to a wrong jack and the entire section got to hear the music until a flight attendent asked him to turn it off. George said that several close by wanted to hear more from the CD ….

As the year winds down, I’m resting the typewriter for a while. Updates as they happen — as radio never sleeps. See YOU on the radio today and here early next year. On monday, january 1, 2007 — the 15 Things That’ll Happen in San Diego Radio. It’s not said enough: Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Enjoy the celebrations in America’s Finest City!

RadioRadio let people see things with their own ears. ~ New York Times
The new national campfire—radio. ~ Linda Ellerbee
BBC Radio is a never-never land of broadcasting, a safe haven from commercial considerations, a honey pot for every scholar and every hare-brained nut to stick a finger into. ~ Morley Safer
Radio wasn’t outside our lives. It coincided with—and helped to shape—our childhood and adolescence. ~ Vincent Canby
You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat. ~ Albert Einstein
Merry ChristmasMiracles: You do not have to look for them. They are there, 24-7, beaming like radio waves all around you. Put up the antenna, turn up the volume - snap… crackle… this just in, every person you talk to is a chance to change the world. ~ Hugh Elliott
I think the primary function of radio is that people want company. ~ Elise Nordling
If something is too hard to do, then it’s not worth doing. You just stick that guitar in the closet next to your shortwave radio, your karate outfit and your unicycle and we’ll go inside and watch TV. ~ Matt Groening
Radio is the theater of the mind; television is the theater of the mindless. ~ Steve Allen
While you are away, movie stars are taking your women. Robert Redford is dating your girlfriend, Tom Selleck is kissing your lady, Bart Simpson is making love to your wife. ~ Baghdad Betty, Iraqi radio announcer, to gulf war troops
Advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they don’t have for something they don’t need. If advertisers spent the same amount of money on improving their products as they do on advertising then they wouldn’t have to advertise them. ~ Will Rogers
Freedom means the right to be stupid. ~ Penn Jillette
Oh crud! ~ David Abromowitz

See YOU on the radio!

Catchin’ radio waves — 2006

Merry ChristmasSurf’s up, and the radio waves have been good. Pencil’s sharpened, here’s a look at some of the best for 2006.

  • Cliff and Company, KSON-FM
  • Cliff, Morgan and Tanner have kept San Diego spelling country K S O N. Morgan keeps Cliff and Tanner in line, and the addition of Tori Peck just makes it all better. The county-wide handshake tours are an added bonus, as the stops included Valley Center, Alpine and other points often missed.

  • Mark Larson, KOGO AM 600
  • Mark traveled more more miles than any host in Southern California. His right-on attitude is for, and about, San Diego. Weekdays starting right at noon

  • Steve Yuhas, KOGO AM 600
  • One hour is not enough. On the “pinch-hitter” list for KOGO, Steve’s perspective brings a whole new look to conservative base radio. Sunday evening at 6 p.m. (Note to Cliff: More time needed for Steve. An hour is not enough.)

  • Scott and BR, XX Sports Radio
  • Need a sports fix? Starting at 5 a.m., Scott and BR tell it to San Diego like it is. Expect more.

  • AJ’s Playhouse, Channel 933
  • AJ and his band of merry men and women have the pulse, the music and the ‘tude. Weekdays mornings.

  • Madison, KPRI FM
  • Madison’s morning show approaches the common sense in us all. Add Gail Newman, and it’s polished, shined, and delivered with a smile every morning. He plays the music and gives the best interviews of anyone in the market on AM or FM.

  • Robert in the Afternoon, KPRI
  • Sure, he may co-own the station, however Robert has stayed the course and kept it local, live, and you never know what will hit the 102.1 airwaves.

  • Finest City Broadcasting (91X, Magic 92.5, Z90)
  • Mike Glickenhaus continues his excellence in radio. He’s guidance has assembled the best crew for the stations in San Diego. Plus, he also lets his decision makers — make the decisions.

  • Randy Dotinga, North County Times
  • San Diego’s only full time newspaper entertainment writer on radio, Randy’s view on the spectrum is worthy of a subscription to the North County paper. Thanks Randy, especially for your footnotes. (Thursday’s edition of the Preview Magazine)

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels. See you on the radio today — and here later in the week. Christmas is Monday — or as I like to call it, my holiday shopping starts Sunday at 4 p.m. (an hour before the quicky mart closes.).
