Air America, the progressive talk network has found a buyer. A New York base real estate mogul was named in court papers to purchase the bankrupt talk radio network.
The network said in a statement that Al Franken’s last day with AA would be Feb. 14. His 9 a.m. to noon would be taken over by Portland, Ore.-based talk show host Thom Hartmann.
The new potential buyer is Stephen Green, the founder and chairman of SL Green Realty Corp. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court must approve of the sale.

CBS Radio’s KyXy-FM is pleased to welcome Kris Toledo as the new full-time host of “Love Songs” weeknights from 7 to midnight, live in studio. Kris was promoted from within, having served as the host of weekend “Love Songs” on KyXy since 2004.
Before joining KyXy, Kris was a movie and music production executive representing companies in New York, Los Angeles and London. She was a Radio & Television major at Palomar College and SDSU, eventually turning her sights on a career in radio. Kris enjoys a growing list of appearances in both radio and TV commercials as well.
Romance is no stranger to Kris. She was engaged to the man who would become her husband on a romantic trip to coastal Spain. Speaking about the North County Firefighter-Paramedic, Kris remembers…“I knew he was it for me! San Diego’s been a very lucky move for me when it comes to love. Now I have the chance to give something back to the listeners of KyXy Love Songs.”
Kris replaces syndicated host John Tesh with “Love Songs” originating live from KyXy’s studios 7-nights a week beginning tonight.
A decision on a permanent weekend Love Songs host will be announced over the next 30 days.
The all-star radio broadcast team for Super Bowl XLI will feature Marv Albert, Boomer Esiason, John Dockery, Bonnie Bernstein, Jim Gray and Tommy Tighe. Former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason will broadcast for both radio and television fulfilling the role of color commentator for Westwood One’s Super Bowl broadcast, as well as contributing to the pre game, halftime and post game shows on CBS Television.
“We’ll have Boomer scrambling more than he did as an NFL quarterback,” quipped David Halberstam, EVP/GM of Westwood One Sports. ”Knowing Boomer, he won’t be at a loss for words no matter where he is. Our producer Howard Deneroff will have him wired as he scurries from the booth, to the elevator and onto the field.”
Super Bowl XLI airs live from Dolphin Stadium in Miami on Sunday. Pre-game coverage begins at noon, followed by kickoff at approximately 3:25 p.m.
Ken Copper (left)is alive and well living in beautiful North County San Diego. After KPOP popped into Air America, Ken has been playing pool and keeping his wit sharp. Now read all about at Ken’s blogspot at KenCopper.BlogSpot.com. For example, Ken writes about the over-use of cell phones in the public: “My hunch is that the people who love their phones have NOTHING important to relay via their wireless appendage and are merely so bored they cannot stand to be alone with themselves.” Stop by and leave your comments as well.
Noted: Ken recommends Something In the Air: Radio, Rock, and the Revolution That Shaped a Generation. The book traces the evolution of radio from the 1950s — when the spread and popularity of television made it almost extinct, to its rise to become “the sound track of American life” and “the mere act of listening made you feel like a part of a secret society.” Ken says he “can’t put the book down”.
Jennifer White, part of the award winning morning show at 91X shares on the station’s web site, a retro-pic. Jennifer writes: “91X listeners and US Marines, Gabe and Josh asked Chris (Cantore) to send some photos of me to Iraq. Chris said yes…I said, only with a little professional help!” She did get the help and you can see more from the 91X page or by clicking Restless-souls.com.
Thank you Jennifer! Bombs Away Dream Baby, to quote musician John Stewart.
Leo Laporte, weekend host at KFI-AM, takes his computer show national on Saturday, Feb. 17. Leo told his AM 640 audience yesterday that nothing will change in the content. During his three hour broadcast, Leo fields calls from the U.S. and Canada as the computer advise specialist has many listeners on KFI’s audio stream.
Premiere Radio will take the show national. The time slot of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. is expected to be the same.

Welcome to Phil Manning, who’ll take over as program director of 91X. He is heading down after a successful stint at 107.7 “The End” in Seattle, Washington. Phil starts at 91X on Monday.
President and COO of Finest City Broadcasting said, “We are very excited to welcome Phil Manning to 91X and FINEST CITY BROADCASTING. We were looking for someone with a unique and creative vision for the future, along with the experience to make it happen. It was great to see that here are a number of very talented programmers out there, but Phil really rose to the top.”
Prior to his lengthy stint in Seattle, Manning was the PD at alternative stations in Los Angeles (Y107), Pittsburgh and Cleveland. He began his career with a six-year run (’88-’94) as the programming chief of Cincinnati’s WOXY, another of the fabled first generation of independent “modern rockers”.
Finest City Broadcasting is a privately held San Diego-based company founded in 2005. FCB also operates Z90.3 (XHTZ-FM) and Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM)

Clear Channel Radio announced today that they will expand the “unique advertising campaign it created with Consolidated Media, a Las Vegas-based vacation resorts operator.” Expect more media celebrity interviews that are disguised to be a sales pitch for a “Las Vegas resort.” The current promotion has featured Tonya Roberts talking with various hosts such as George Noory and several local hosts in the area.
The “interview” is slated for two minutes and offers the listeners a chance to “be a high-roller” if they call toll free number.
With the expansion of this campaign, Consolidated Media is expecting an increase in call volume of six times, to 600 calls per spot.
“Clear Channel Radio is committed to offering advertisers all types of effective advertising solutions, from very short spots to long-form ads. We’re not locked into any one solution,” said Greg Ashlock, Regional Vice President for Clear Channel Radio. “Radio has always been a medium that offers a broad range of creative, promotional opportunities and we’re interested in taking advantage of all of them for our partners.”
Some short form examples are teasers for an upcoming television show from FOX. These two second blip-verts can expand to any length of time.
Clear Channel programs KOGO, KLSD, Channel 933, US 95.7, Star 94.1, 101.5 KGB, and Rock 105.3.

“Over the past year, the Clear Channel team has worked extremely hard to make our stations sound even better for our listeners by running fewer commercials per hour and improving ad copy. This new, more entertaining environment has translated into increased time spent listening to our stations.” John Hogan
Clear Channel Radio today announced that a full 320 of its radio stations in 81 markets are set to air HD digital multicasts. These additional stations represent the fourth wave of a larger launch begun in January 2006. The new channels will also be made available at the company’s HD2 streaming site www.clearchannelmusic.com/hdradio as they go live.
In each local market, Clear Channel Radio’s HD2 multicasts either complement existing on-air programming or bring entirely new music or spoken-word genres to local listeners. In some cases, local programmers will draw from programming created by the Format Lab within the company’s Content Research & Development Group. In other cases, the channels are programmed fully locally.
While today’s announcement does not add to the HDRadio count in San Diego it does show the groups commitment to the new standard.
In San Diego, stations include:

There have been reports of a possible pirate station in Santee at 98.5 FM. The station was playing a 30 minute repeat loops of dance/hip-hop/rap. The only broadcast facility at that frequency is a CP in Oceanside for 100 watts. That station is not on the air, so stay tuned!

Scott Riggs sends: ” I received some not-so-great news earlier this week. After four amazing years at ROCK 105.3 FM San Diego, my DJ tenure and radio shows, The Inside Track and Guerilla Radio, will no longer be part of the ROCK 105.3 programming line-up. It wasn’t a decision against me or the shows but more to modify the Sunday night programming at ROCK so that it is more in line with the day-to-day programming of the station.
I am eternally grateful to ROCK 105.3 Program Director Shauna Moran-Brown for giving me the opportunity and freedom to program an Indie/Alt. show that was far outside the normal ROCK programming and letting me carry on for four years. This entire experience has really brought joy into my life and helped me love music and radio more than I ever knew I could…for that, I am grateful.
I also want to thank you for your support, kindness and patience with me throughout the years. I’ve really enjoyed being part of the San Diego Radio community and Indie music family for the past 15 years and hope that I can return soon and once again give a radio voice to such great music.
So, what’s next for me? One door closes and another opens…that’s what they say, right? My first goal is to get the show back on the air in San Diego. I’ll be shopping The Inside Track to other radio stations here in town and I believe there is at least one or maybe two stations that might be interested. I will, of course, let you know if any progress is made on that front. I’m also cooking up some other exciting things that I will let you know about as they get closer to becoming a reality.
Other than that, I’m going to keep going to shows, listening to great music and getting the word out in any way I can. Within the next month, I’ll be launching a new web site at http://www.riggsradio.com. There will be all kinds of stuff on there, but, my blog will be my new outlet for music release. Once it’s launched, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, you can go to http://www.myspace.com/scottriggs for the latest news.

The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: A person who is a master in the art of living makes little distinction between work and play, between labor and leisure, between love and religion. They hardly know which is which; to them, they are always doing both. ~Zen Poet
Mark Larson writes: “Word is that the San Diego-based USS Ronald Reagan will re-deploy soon… much earlier than expected.” The warship returned from six months in the Gulf last July. KOGO’s mid-day expert writes that “If the ship gets new orders to head out in support of the war on terrorism, I plan on linking up for another show “on location”.
Fellow talkshow host Michael Reagan and Mark have been involved with the ship since its commissioning in Norfolk.
Mark will be the featured speaker at Camp Pendleton’s prayer breakfast on February 8.
The Ronald Reagan Plankowner also adds: “Did you see that Jarrod Fowler, a sailor on the Reagan, made it to the next round of American Idol? I had him on my show from the ship in the Persian Gulf when he was competing in their version of the show — Reagan Idol”… Fun to see his progress!”
Last week a Sac-town radio station KDND was at the end — the end of a morning radio bit gone bad. The “Wee for a WII” had one participant drinking excess water then dying. The station fired ten people from the staff of “The End 107.9″ yesterday. Over at Star 94.1, a very similar promotion for the hot video game was played on the same day. This time with better results. Meanwhile in the state’s capital, criminal charges are being considered after hearing an audio outtake. See the SacBee website for the five minute audio clip.
hEAR Wax: That is world-famous Jim McInnes on 760 KFMB. He’s taken a position at Metro Traffic and delivers the news weeknights at the talk station …… Monday’s holiday celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday had Cindy Pace of 101.5 KGB playing out takes of King’s speeches and then ending with U2’s “Pride: In The Name Of Love”. Nice! …… Saturday night, KOGO has Coast to Coast starting at 6 p.m. On that day, the first four hours belong to Ian Punnett, with Art Bell taking over at 10 p.m. Last weekend, Art, still feeling the effects of a trans-Pacific move, had to sit out — and Ian kept at the mic for a solid eight hours…… Dave Palet of 103.7 Free FM tells me that he was suprised that Marty Schottenheimer returns next season with the Chargers. “Everyone who knew … said Marty was out!” Dave, along with Jeff Dotseth kicked the reasons around all this week. “The Chargers kept him,” Dave said…… Joe Tutino takes over as Director of Operations and Programming for XX Sports and Cash 1700. The Bulldog replaces Bill Pugh. He left to become program director of Sporting News Radio….. Don Imus, the highest viewed show on MSNBC — you know, a radio show on cable television … has inked a deal with WFAN for five more years. He is expected to remain on MSNBC as well…… Wild man Tom Leykis hits the San Diego streets a week from this Flash Friday. The afternoon host on 103.7 Free FM will be in the downtown area. More details as they happen.
The Federal Communications Commission has digitally said NO to a Wall Street push to merge XMRadio and Sirrius. The companies, both loosing money, have been rumored to combine services. However the FCC said that a proposed combined company would be nixed by the agency. Both companies had a positive cash flow the last quarter of 2006, but have lost money since selling service. Stay Tuned to the heavens ….

The GelderHead Thought For The Day: Above all, life should be fun. ~Unknown
Channel 933’s “Boy Toy Jesse” Lozano will take over afternoons at LA’s KIIS-FM 102.7. Jesse has been heard on weekends at KIIS-FM in LA for the last three years, in addition to his duties at Channel 933.
Jesse told LARadio.com: “There are now TWO things in my life that have shown me what awesome things can happen when you make sacrifices for something you love. The first is my beautiful four-year-old daughter, who gives me wonderful things every single day. This gig at KIIS is the second. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity. Jocks all over the country dream of, and prepare for this chance, and I am so excited to be here.”
Jesse starts in afternoon drive at KIIS on Monday, January 22.
Congratulations Jesse! See you on the radio in la LA!
Tuesday’s FCC log had a little hidden gem that will bring a station from the desert town of Brawley to nearby Campo. KSIQ-FM, at 96.1, has been approved to begin construction on the station. It is slated to be at 25,000 watts ERP. The map (see yesterday’s post and map) will give a city-grade signal to east county and southern San Diego county. Stay tuned, no time frame given to have this “new” signal in the San Diego market.
US 95.7’s Kris Rochester is very honest — heck, even Honest Abe finds him when he ventures from home. Recording artist Keith Gale and Kris were hanging out Nashville … Honest!!
This week’s Big Apple order scare had nothing to do with KOGO’s Mark Larson. Just because Mr. Larson was on his way to beautiful downtown Newark and the airport — and was seen leaving New York City prior to the mystery smell — he assured this writer he had nothing to do with it. Mark has a nose for news, however in this case, he didn’t have his nose in this breath taking item. Hear Mark at KOGO from noon to 3 p.m.
The fall book hit the streets on Wednesday. Listening habits for 12-plus include:
103.7 Free FM’s Danny Bonaduce heads to Temecula Friday night. He’ll bring his comedy routine to a local casino in the Riverside County area.
The launch of The Dennis Miller Show was announced this week. In his first ever radio show, five-time Emmy award winner and four-time Writers’ Guild award winner, Dennis Miller will offer his unique take on the day’s topics with comedy and satire. The daily three-hour talk show will also feature Miller taking listener calls, and interviewing high-profile special guests. The show will debut in March on major market radio stations across the country. Westwood One will hold all broadcast and digital rights to the show.
“This seems like a great fit for me since I grew up in Pittsburgh where broadcast radio was born,” said Miller. “I always knew I would try radio and right now seems like the perfect time. In a world where the stakes are high, the medium is a nice blend of the comfortable and the provocative. I look forward to working with Westwood One and soon being able to finally say aloud the words, ‘I’m up against a hard break’.”
Ready for some football? Saturday’s game will have XX Sports Radio with the game ball. On Sunday, Rock 105.3 will have the Chargers game with Hank Bauer and Josh Lewin and other action on XX Sports Radio. Of course, the expert view is with Dave and Jeff and Free FM 103.7 all week starting at 10 a.m.
SDRadio contributor Bryan Wellander writes: “There is an update to the sale of XHOCL 99.3. MVS International Corperation has submitted an application for a proposal to take over the programming of the station. The application can be found here. It looks like Clear Channel is a step closer to getting rid of that station.
There is also speculation from other industry experts that Clear Channel may have to divest stations in the San Diego, Inland Empire, and Los Angeles market. Market rules give each owner eight stations — five FM and three AM stations. It gets confusing when Riverside County, the High Desert, and other outlying areas can count against overall ownership. Expect lawyers to be chewin’ pencils and lobbyists to hit the agency for clarification. Meanwhile, Clear Channel is on track to move from a public traded company to private. Stay Tuned!
Also noted: Clear Channel Communications has sold the Santa Barbara cluster of seven stations. Former CCU executive Roy Laughlin is one of the new owners. Rincon Broadcasting, is expected to have a local marketing agreement in place by January 16.
