As announced on the Roger Hedgecock program Thursday afternoon, a new partnership with the Aztecs will begin on KOGO with the 2007-08 academic school year.
KOGO and Clear Channel Communications welcomes back the San Diego State University Aztecs to their ‘new’ radio home. KOGO will broadcast Aztec Football and Aztec Basketball games.
Clear Channel San Diego Vice-President and Market Manager Bob Bolinger had this to say: “We are proud and privileged to be the new home of the Aztecs and begin a strong new partnership with SDSU,” said Bolinger. “We know the Aztecs are committed to a winning program and we are committed to providing the best college sports broadcast in the country for the fans, the alumni and the community.”
Aztec Football recently announced their 2007 schedule. San Diego State plays its eight conference contests on consecutive weeks from October 6 to November 24, after a four-game non-league slate to open the season.
Visit Go Aztecs Web Site for more info.
SDSU News Release:
SAN DIEGO – Aztec Sports Properties, the Division of Learfield Sports that holds multi-media rights for San Diego State University Athletics, has signed an agreement that will make Clear Channel Broadcasting in San Diego and AM 600 KOGO the radio home of Aztec athletics. The five-year agreement will begin with the 2007-08 academic school year.
AM 600 KOGO, the highest rated AM station in the San Diego market, will air all San Diego State football and men’s basketball games, and weekly coaches shows from September through March. KOGO’s signal stretches from north of Santa Barbara to south of Tijuana. In addition, Clear Channel will showcase 15 additional live sporting events, including baseball and women’s basketball games.
“We are pleased that Learfield has been able to put together a new radio deal for San Diego State,” San Diego State Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel said. “Having our football and men’s basketball games and coaches shows all on one station and to have that be the highest rated AM station in the market gives us a great opportunity to better serve our Aztec fan base. In addition, Clear Channel’s commitment to provide coverage to additional sports, as well as its ability to help promote San Diego State athletics to a variety of demographics, will help our entire athletic program grow.”
“We are proud and privileged to be the new home of the Aztecs and begin a strong new partnership with SDSU,” Clear Channel Vice President and Marketing Manager Bob Bolinger said. “We know the Aztecs are committed to a winning program and we are committed to providing the best college sports broadcast in the country for the fans, the alumni and the community.”
San Diego State has partnered with Clear Channel the past three years to play host to the annual KGB SkyShow event in conjunction with an Aztec football game. The results have been successful as the SkyShow event has accounted for three of the five largest home crowds in school history.
“We have worked with Clear Channel on other initiatives and they have a proven and exceptional reach in the San Diego marketplace,” said Steve Becvar, General Manager of Aztec Sports Properties. “It’s important to be creative and find ways to grow our fan base and the Clear Channel partnership will allow us to do that.”
AM 600 KOGO, San Diego’s News and Talk Station, is owned by Clear Channel Communications. Clear Channel Communications is a global leader in out-of-home advertising and entertainment. The company owns radio and television stations, outdoor advertising displays, produces live entertainment productions and owns venues in 65 countries, including throughout the United States. In San Diego, Clear Channel owns a total of six radio stations in addition to AM 600 KOGO: KGB-FM (101.5), KIOZ-FM (Rock 105.3), KMYI-FM (STAR 94.1), KHTS-FM (Channel 933), KUSS-FM (US 95.7 FM) and KLSD-AM (AM 1360).

KSON-FM (97.3 and 92.1 FM) has been nominated for Station of the Year in a Major Market for the 42nd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. Other nominees in the category are WSIX/Nashville, WXTU/Philadelphia, KEEY/Minneapolis and WQYK/Tampa-St. Petersburg.
“We are truly honored to receive this nomination from the Academy of Country Music,” said Darrel Goodin, Vice President/General Manager of LFM Radio in San Diego. “I am so appreciative for the recognition of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice that our staff has given to ensure that KSON remains one of the great stations in country radio.”
“The entire staff is both honored and excited by KSON’s nomination,” added KSON Program Director John Marks. “Not only is this a first for our staff, it’s KSON’s first ACM nomination in its 40+ year history as a country station. We sincerely thank the Academy for this honor.”
The Academy of Country Music, an artist and industry-driven organization, provides financial resources to ensure the on-going philanthropic work of its Charitable Fund. The Academy is headquartered in Encino, CA.
CBS will broadcast the 42nd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 15 at 8 p.m.
Darrel added: “All of the stations on the nominee list are pretty highly thought of, but it is interesting to hear the difference in style as you look around the country. I think that KSON really reflects the west coast sound. It started with Buck Owens in the 60s. We’ve always been less traditional sounding than stations in the deep south. It will be interesting to see how the judges feel. Regardless, it is great to receive this kind of recognition for KSON. Especially after the year that KIFM and KBZT have had with similar recognition.
KSON is the weekday home to Cliff and Company, Tori Peck, Nick Upton, Kimo Jensen, and Wes Poe.
Also this Friday, Cliff, Morgan and Tanner will be at Janet’s Montana Café, 2506 Alpine Blvd., in beautiful Alpine on their handshake tour. Stop by — and also say hi to world-famous marathon trainer Tori Peck.
Monday was turnover day at KOGO-AM. San Diego’s News and Talk Station kicked off the noon hour with Dr. Laura — live. Mark Larson (pictured with Marc Bailey of FOX News) hit the airwaves at 6 p.m. Producer Anna wrote: “We are officially on from 6-8pm all week long to give you a little something to help that San Diego commute not seem quite so bad. Along with the new show time, we have added new show features, including the “Loser of the Day” and Mark’s expanded commentary on the news in a way only he can do it. As the weeks go by you will want to keep listening as the show adds even more features that you won’t want to miss.”
With Mark in the “expanded afternoon drive” that doesn’t make your commute home drag on for an extra hour — Mark will keep the show running with traffic and reports — plus adding in his frequent guest book all in two hours.
Last weekend, my son and I went to Orange County to attend a paint ball fest. While waiting, I took advantage of listening to LA’s vast HDRadio stations. KPCC-FM had a tri-fecta of HD programming. KPCC-HD2 is BBC Mundo, a Spanish language news service from The British Broadcasting Corporation. KPCC-HD3 channel is The Current, a program service of contemporary alternative music from Minnesota Public Radio in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Noted: KUSC’s classic programming was sterling. On the shores of Huntington Beach, I was able to lock on KOGO-AM’s signal clearly, and also picked up My 94.1’s HD2 programming.
Michael Hayes is gone from Star 94.1. Hayes, the program director, had his job cut as Channel 933’s Jimmy Steele takes on duties.
Star’s afternoon dutes soley rest with Jen. Stay Tuned.

Clear Channel Communication’s move to go private appears to be over. Two major stockholders have said they will not vote for the move, citing the company was worth more. CCU’s board wants to take the company private. Both Highfields Capital and Fidelity Investments have said “no” to the deal, derailing the move to be private.
The group operates seven stations in the San Diego market:
KOGO-AM
KLSD-AM
Channel 933
Star 94.1
US 95.7
101.5 KGB
Rock 105.3
KFI-AM from Los Angeles is often referred to as the 8th station.

The Federal Communications Commission has approved rules for digital audio broadcast on the FM and AM bands. (Photo: San Diego Union-Tribune)
The IBOC (In Band, On Channel) has been used with special permission since October 2002. Once finalized, FM stations will not need approval to launch multicast stations. AM stations will be permitted to broadcast HDRadio after sunset. Currently, the rules do not permit IBOC transmission after local sunset. (This could end long distance listening to some stations, commonly called “DXing”.)
From the FCC release: “Radio stations broadcasting in a digital format using in-band on-channel (“IBOC”) technology are able to offer listeners enhanced sound quality, improved reception, and new multicasting and datacasting services.
In today’s Order, the Commission:
• Refrains from imposing a mandatory conversion schedule for radio stations to commence digital broadcast operations;
• Allows FM radio stations to operate in the extended hybrid digital mode;
• Requires that each local radio station broadcasting in digital mode to simulcast a digital signal of at least comparable audio quality to its analog signal;
• Adopts a flexible bandwidth policy permitting a radio station to transmit high quality audio, multiple program streams, and data casting services at its discretion;
• Allows radio stations to time broker unused digital bandwidth to third parties, subject to certain regulatory requirements;
• Applies existing programming and operational statutory and regulatory requirements to all free DAB programming streams;
• Authorizes AM nighttime operations;
• Dismisses several pending Petitions for Reconsideration and Petitions for Rulemaking that asked, inter alia, the Commission to reconsider the adoption of iBiquity’s in-band, on-channel (IBOC) system as the technology chosen for DAB transmission;
• Seeks further comment on appropriate limits to the amount of subscription services that may be offered by radio stations; and
• Seeks comment on whether the Commission should adopt any new public interest requirements for digital audio broadcasters.
The standard was approved 5-0 in the vote.

AM 540, as reported below in Monday’s edition, will stay the course: Go Country.
Michael Levine writes: “Mount Wilson FM Broadcasters has no plans and continues to have no plans to switch Standards to Country 540 AM.
Brad Martini Chambers writes: “A listener forwarded your article about 540 AM and it was news to me, despite being the guy identified in the story as the PD. You linked back to our website as the attribution and all I said there, as I’ve said on the air, is that we’ve been offered an HD multicast channel in Los Angeles.
Don’t get me wrong, we were in the process of building a decent audience in San Diego and would love a shot at getting back on the air there as well as L.A. (and the rest of the universe for that matter). We’ve had conversations with a couple of San Diego broadcasters about offering our “Contemporary Standards” format via FM or HD. It is available now only on the Internet, at www.martiniinthemorning.com.
Our experience working on the launch of 7 XM radio channels (while working for Clear Channel) suggests that the audience most likely to purchase new technology, in this case HD receivers, is the group who feels they’re most ignored by mainstream media - also the group with the money to pay for the new receivers. 40 plus consumers feel passed over by broadcasters dependent on revenue from youth obsessed advertisers. And Baby-Boomers, representing 27% of the US population, control 59% of all discretionary spending. So they have the motivation and the means to act on that motivation. What better format than the contemporary blend of standards selling millions of Rod Stewart and Tony Bennett CDs?
One of the challenges faced by conventional broadcasters trying to blaze new trails on HD multicast channels is that their revenue model is based on selling commercials at rates determined by audience levels. That makes it tough to sink a lot of money into multicast channels unlikely to generate audience numbers worthy of traditional advertiser attention. As a result, how much money can they afford to commit for talent, contests/promotions, interactivity, production and other elements listeners, especially Boomers, have come to expect. Through our Fabulous 570/690 experience, we’ve figured out how to monetize a niche and can offer compelling personalities, promotions, events and the kind of entertainment value the audience will demand before they plunk down $150-$500 for a new receiver.
That’s one of the challenges to selling HD with the multicast “Jukeboxes” generally available. There are a few shining examples across the country, but they are few and far between. We’re ready to roll the dice in San Diego and Los Angeles, knowing there’s an audience out there. We’ve met them. We’ve traveled with them and we’ve seen their passion for the format…done right. And that doesn’t mean a whole bunch of songs back to back…even the right songs. These folks grew up with Shotgun Tom, Bobby Rich, Beaver Cleaver, Rich Brother Robin, Happy Hare and too many others to mention. If they want a bunch of songs on shuffle, they have their iPod. If they want to be entertained, they turn on the radio.
Thanks for thinking of me.

The World-Famous GelderHead Thought Of The Day: We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Yesterday’s edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune featured an article on HDRadio. Read it at here!
Copyright Royalty Board. Internet broadcasters may have to bow and give them more money. In proposed moves that will reach back in time to grab more coin, the board, based at the Library of Congress, want internet streaming stations to hand over more money. For radio stations, they are paying twice: once for over the air, and once again for internet streaming. While artist deserve to be paid for their music, the constant money grab could kill streaming options for stations. Stay Digitially Tuned.

23-Skidoo: Inside reports at Clear Channel Broadcasting in San Diego indicate that up to 23 persons were recently “let go” at Granite Ridge. Station management referred questions to corporate headquarters in Texas.
Missing from the airwaves include: Ronnie Loaiza, Mark Sanchez, Marc Kaczor and Mike McGregor plus several other on-air staff. Including in the staff cuts were promotions and sales folks for CCU-SD.
Clear Channel corporate is gearing up for a private take over, and that has run into some hot water by major holders, including Fidelity Investment. The stock holder vote has been put off until April.

Mid-day Talk and evening schoolin’: 103.7 Free FM has dropped most of its LA base programming out of the schedule. The recent trends were not kind to the station; however this was before the current on-air changes. Dave and Jeff are growing into their roll as mid-day mischief makers as Free FM seems to be starting to hit their stride. As they hit the airwaves at 10 a.m., Dave and Jeff bring local talk and ‘tude. It is a better fit for the market as they are tuned into the area.
Not afraid to poke fun at anything — including calling themselves bitches.
This Friday, Dave and Jeff take it to the road. They’ll get hammered on the air, and then limo to a watering hole in Clairmont Mesa. Natasha writes, “After they get hammered on their show they’re taking a limo to drink more at the Bullpen from 2:30-4:30pm! Come on out and take some shots, watch some shots, get free swag, or just say hi and have a drink with the bitches! Oh, Cristy, Safe Stewart and I will be out there too! Come party with us!”
To top it off, the only live and local talk show after 7 is on Free FM. It’s adult education at its best, learning it from those in the know. John, Brent, and Kris offer better advice than seasoned scribes. That’s why Gen Y U should be on your must-listen list. Taking on everything from Iraq to local parking meters, Gen Y U will give you a ride — and also a chance for you to ask Brent “What’s up with that ‘hawk.”
Tuesday’s SDRadio Lunch was a success. Lupita Ramírez writes: “I had a ball at the sdradio.net luncheon! It was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. It was such a treat seeing Mark Gleason today and reminiscing all of the fun during the Schafer International and Peters Productions days, daze, most aptly describes ‘em. And all of the shameless name-dropping. That was wicked…we’ve met and worked with most of the best! (as an email listing would say for too many recipients….”list truncated”) Sorry that Jerry G. wasn’t there. And Mark and I won prizes from SDR for our knowledge of San Diego radio. How cool is that? Or “how old we are.”
Mark took home a Grundig FM/AM/SW radio, Lupita is reading “Something in the Air: Radio, Rock, and the Revolution That Shaped a Generation by Marc Fisher, and Dr. Phil Goode is sauting “Everything You Wanted To Know About Cooking, But Didn’t Know How To Ask”. Special thanks to Steve Blessing for attending every SDRadio lunch over the past seven years. Stay tuned, it’ll happen again in July.
XM will be launching a new channel for St. Patrick’s Day – XM Green: Radio Ireland. The channel will debut next Friday and will feature the true sounds of Ireland – from traditional music by The Clancy Brothers to contemporary artists such as Celtic Thunder. XM Green will be available for 72-hours over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The special broadcast will be on XM Channel 200.
Mark Green, owner of Air America sent out to the press about his take over of the progressive network: “Air America was a large, smart idea to counter the near-monopoly on talk radio by the far (f)right. But like most start-ups, the business plan collided with reality. Six CEOs over its first three years and various missteps and misspending sent it into Chapter 11.
It’s now ready to go from The Perils of Pauline to The Little Engine that Could. How? First, by focusing on the radio fundamentals of making a strong line-up even stronger; second, by connecting to other major progressive organizations to be mutually fortifying; and third, by being a multi-media content company involving other information platforms mobile, video, broadband, blogs, websites. It’s time to think outside the (radio) box.
The twin goals are to make it profitable and influential. One without the other won’t work. If it’s not a business, it’ll go out of business.”

Welcome to SDRadio for Monday, March 5, 2007. The world-famous GelderHead thought of the day: Whatever you attempt, go at it with spirit. ~Unknown
Free FM afternoon host Penn Jillette bid good-bye last Friday. The one-hour Las Vegas based show was digitally delayed in San Diego and most markets.
“The reason we’re ending it,” Penn said, “is just because I can’t do more than an hour. You have to understand I am a show biz wimp, so I don’t even know what hard work is.”
Meanwhile, tonight at 7 p.m., The next generation of talk hits the air: GEN.Y.U. Radio takes to the weekdays at 7 p.m.
John, Kris, and Brent, all 23, grew up together in the San Diego and hold weekly on air arguments about society, politics, sex, relationships, business, and the future of their country and community.
John, the recovering law student, has no problem telling older generations exactly where he thinks they went wrong. John’s too-quick wit, a trait that has gotten him in trouble all throughout his life, has finally found a home in radio. John has recently been named as one of San Diego Magazine’s 50 People to Watch in 2007.
Kris, the poet, uses the most thought and care with his words like the English major he is. Although all three hosts consider themselves extremely funny, Kris is by far the funniest, something Brent and John both acknowledge everyday.
Brent, the rebel with a cause, will twist and turn callers’ arguments until they eventual start crying or hang up. When Brent does this to John, he gets very frustrated, which pleases Kris.
Magic 92.5’s Xavier The X-Man has been honored from the San Diego county Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The afternoon host at Magic was recognized for his “extensive volunteer work at community and schools.
Xavier is the first radio host to win the award.
Also: The X-Man writes: “I host this year’s San Diego Caesar E. Chavez Commemoration Breakfast at the San Diego Convention Center to recognize and promote the work of Caesar E. Chavez. This is a wonderful event that brings out San Diego’s movers and shakers of the San Diego community and recognizes those individuals who continue to following the workings of Caesar E. Chavez.”
18-months ago, KOGO’s Mark Larson was in the Iraq theater and compares CBS’ 60 Minutes to his trip: “The lead story on tonight’s 60 Minutes featured Brig. Gen. John Custer, chief of intelligence for U.S. Central Command: Avail here. CBS promoted Scott Pelley’s story as a new revelation: The jihadists are using the internet for recruiting, with shocking results. Glad they’ve finally caught up with the story. Gen. Custer revealed all of this when I first interviewed him in the Middle East in September of 2005. And he’s updated this issue on more recent phone interviews and in-studio with us in San Diego a few weeks ago. He’s a very smart man, and we should be grateful to have him in such position of influence. Wish I could say the same about CBS News. But at least they’re getting with the story now… about a year and a half late.”

Cliff Dumas, Morgan Thomas, Bill Tanner and Tori Peck, better known as Cliff & Company, have signed on for another three years as KSON-FM’s Morning Team. The show has experienced immense success since taking over the 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. time slot three years ago on 97.3 and 92.1 FM.
“In the time I’ve worked with Cliff & Company, they’ve displayed the desire, work ethic and tenacity needed to succeed,” said KSON Program Director John Marks. “In three short years, they have established themselves as a consistent top 5 player in San Diego, which is no easy feat in the most competitive morning show market in the United States.”
“Cliff, Morgan, Tanner and Tori have exhibited character and shown a tremendous amount of courage under very challenging circumstances,” added KSON General Manager Darrel Goodin. “In a very short time, they have built an outstanding four- person show from scratch while facing tremendous competitive pressure. And they’ve managed to be quite successful doing it. Cliff and Company work incredibly hard, are very talented and most importantly, they’re good people. That’s what KSON is all about.”
In the Fall 2006 Arbitron ratings, Cliff & Company placed 5th with a 4.1 Share in Adults 25-54, Monday-Friday.
