Welcome to SDRadio for Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Radio notes:

KCBQ-AM long and storied history with San Diego is beyond legendary, it’s one of the cornerstones of Top 40 personality radio. The call letters live on, thanks to Salem Broadcasting, and the line-up are hits from the conservative side of the house.

As the 50,000 watt towers fell from the Santee broadcast location, like a good broadcast neighbor, Clear Channel was there. The original broadcast location was on leased ground. (A momento to the Santee towers are placed in the parking lot of the big-box store.) Clear Channel San Diego let the one-time rival use the 1360 broadcast antenna farm to keep the 1170 signal on the air. At one time, KGB-AM and KCBQ were neck-in-neck in music radio. 1170 KCBQ is currently broadcasting at reduced power from a temporary longwire antenna on a tower shared by KGB-FM and KLSD.

The longwire broadcast, not really ideal, will change soon. The Federal Communications Commission is expected to approve the final move to 50,000 watts daytime power. Recently, KCBQ has been testing the higher-power signal at the transmitter location shared with 910 KECR-AM in Lakeside. The towers are to the east of highway 67, near San Vincente dam.

Family Stations Inc, the owner of KECR, is a non-commercial traditional religious broadcasting network.
