KIFM is one of the few Smooth Jazz stations in the country to ever achieve number one status and has now made history by accomplishing this milestone four times in a row.
Program Director and Morning Show host, Mike Vasquez, states, “I’m proud of the fact that our station is locally programmed by San Diegans for San Diegans. Fox Television’s American Idol hit the Q yesterday after a weekend of potential winners camping out at the stadium.
On US 95.7’s Tony and Kris Morning show, former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis stopped by to talk about how American Idol helped launch his career. Constantine is now on The Bold and The Beautiful on CBS playing himself! He is also releasing an album later this month. While in studio, Constantine tried to teach Tony and Kris his signature “rock star” gaze.
Fox officials said over 12,000 hopeful singers lined up at the stadium over the weekend for their try out as the next idol. The tryouts will narrow the group to 400.
Meanwhile sister station Star 94.1 was on the scene with Laura Cain and Little Tommy Sablan working the crowd. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders (center) stopped by and talked with the showgram.

The world-famous GelderHead thought of the day: Do not fear mistakes-there are none. ~ Davis Mile
San Diego 1700AM update: Program Director Mark Larson is making fast moves to build the new Broadcast Company of the Americas station. Not only will he be doing a new live, local 5 to 9 a.m. talk show, but he’s set to announce expanded news coverage from NBC Radio and the addition of Dennis Miller’s radio show.
Dennis’ show was heard previously on 103.7 Free FM prior to the station’s switch from talk radio. Dennis does his show in Southern California and is also appearing at a local casino on Thursday — just in time for the return of the show. Dennis is slated to appear on Mark’s new show early this week to kickoff the partnership.
Also in the line up at San Diego 1700AM: Michael Reagan’s daily show. Michael started his show in San Diego at KSDO and has a strong affinity to our area. Mark is Mike’s friend, and is his frequent guest-host on his national show. Expect more San Diego connections with Michael on 1700AM.
KOGO is extending the try-outs for the 6 to 8 p.m. shift. The evening opening at the talk station happened when Mark Larson hung up his KOGO headphones. One thing that shouldn’t happen — that did — was to have Glenn Beck’s weekend show replayed last Monday night. Beck’s show is live from 6 to 9 a.m. and having a weekend replay is a head scratcher. What would be good, as KOGO has made a news-shift and talk commitment in September, have the early evening shift lined up soon. Hopefully, it’ll be live and local, not a syndicated host.
Also noted: in case you have missed it, see below for Dave Mason’s departure in September for KOGO. Stay tuned
Jeff and Jer along with 94.1 broadcast from the Q this morning. Jeff and Jer talk to San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. His staff sent a letter the America Idol folks — and today is the result of that on-air brain storm.
Gary Kelley ended his TV career at KGTV yesterday. In an email, Gary wrote: “Today is my last day at 10 News after 11 years. 9 1/2 of the last years bringing you the weather. For a native San Diegan it has been a dream come true. God bless you and your family and thank you for everything. I truly value you watching and hope to see you around town in our beautiful city of San Diego.”
Gary radio history in San Diego includes KCBQ, B100, KPRI and KSON-FM. Gary is on-line at The Kelley Co. Stay Tuned!
Noted: Hall of Fame coverage on Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr., has handled by the pros at XX Sports Radio during Sunday’s event. Ted Leitner and Hall of Fame member Jerry Coleman were on hand in Cooperstown, N.Y. At the same time, the Padres were enjoying a 11-run inning in Houston.

Blaqk Audio, a side project of Davey Havok and Jade Puget who are also members of the rock band AFI, will release CexCells in stores on August 14. Havok and Puget are both scheduled to appear at the event, which will give 91X listeners the first opportunity to hear the new album before its release.

KOGO is changing morning drive time and appears to be dropping its news commitment to San Diego. Being added is Chip Franklin who is slated to hit the airwaves after Labor Day. The Baltimore Sun indicates that Chip will be doing a morning drive time talk show. (photo: Baltimore Sun Chiaki Kawajiri)
“This is a tremendous, life-changing opportunity for me,” told the Baltimore Sun. He is leaving WBAL, 1090 AM, on Aug. 3.
Chip tells SDRadio jokes about coming to San Diego and learning local sayings like “La Jolla”: “I can barely speak English… Look forward to meeting everyone… Thanks for the note-great site.”
He’ll face Rick Roberts in the morning drive at KFMB, and veteran Mark Larson at San Diego 1700 in what could set the battle for talk radio in the market.
Apparently out is the morning news program at KOGO that has anchors Dave Mason, LaDona Harvey and Mark Evans.
KOGO has one other time slot to fill or make a commitment: the 6 to 9 p.m. drive time.
About Chip:: “Chip is the winner of the National 2004 Edward R. Murrow award for writing, never before won by a talk-show host.He also has four for Best Talk Show Host. A veteran stand-up comic and broadcaster with over a dozen national television appearances. “(WBAL.com)
From KOGO:
The Chip Franklin Show will debut Tuesday September 4, 2007 on AM 600 KOGO, San Diego’s News and Talk Station from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. weekdays.
For the last seven years, Chip Franklin has hosted a very successful and highly popular talk show from 9 a.m. to Noon on WBAL-AM in Baltimore.
Chip has won an Edward R. Murrow award for writing from the Radio and Television News Directors Association, an award never before won by a radio talk-show host. He has been honored with nine Achievement in Radio awards, including four for Best Talk Show Host.
Chip, a veteran stand-up comic and a regular guest on national television news programs, has been honored by “Talkers”, the radio talk-show trade publication, as one of America’s Top 100 talk show hosts.
“We are thrilled that Chip is joining KOGO”, said Program Director Cliff Albert. “Chip is easy to get to know and San Diego radio listeners are really going to like his personality and his blend of breaking news and talk on the show.”
The Chip Franklin Show on KOGO will include full service news, traffic, business and sports updates each hour.
San Diego’s First News, hosted by Dave Mason, will continue to be heard on KOGO until September 1st. Mason also will continue his work as host of the Beatles Show on KGB-FM as well as his work on other Clear Channel Radio programs.
Chip Franklin joins San Diego’s leading talk radio line-up with Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, Roger Hedgecock and George Noory of Coast to Coast AM.

From the National Association of Broadcasters:
Noting that such a merger would “violate long-standing Commission policies against spectrum monopolies and the procompetitive vision enshrined by the Telecommunications Act of 1996,” the NAB filing concluded “there is no legal or factual basis upon which the Commission can approve the proposed merger between XM and Sirius.”
NAB’s response also cited a study by telecommunications economist Professor Stephen S. Wildman, co-director of the Quello Center for Telecommunication Management and Law at Michigan State University. Wildman’s report studies the pricing and advertising dimensions of the satellite radio market and concludes that the FCC should deny XM and Sirius’s Merger Application.

Wes Poe, music director and on-air personality, has left KSON-FM. He told All Access he is “looking for new opportunities”. Wes’ record has been proven and can be reached at wespoe@aol.com. Also on Wednesday, the Marconi Awards were announced by the NAB, and KSON-FM was nominated as Country Station of the Year.
Spanglish: Entravision’s Super Estrella 107.1-FM has
added English-language hits to its current Contemporary Hits Radio (CHR) format. The station, based in Los Angeles, can also be heard on 107.1 FM from Fallbrook. Tapping the important Latino advertising market, KSSE is reaching more bilingual listeners.
Mark Larson gave SDRadio the exclusive on his return to radio. He’ll be filling in for Michael Reagan on Monday. The show is heard on the America Right Channel XM166 from 3-6 p.m. The program is also digitally delayed from 6 to 11 p.m. on Sirius’ Patriot Channel 144.
Here’s the official press release from Broadcast Company of the Americas:
Broadcast Company of the Americas’ CEO John Lynch announced Wednesday the launch of “San Diego 1700”, a live and local news talk station for San Diego about San Diego. San Diego 1700, formerly CASH 1700AM, will debut on August 1 and feature Mark Larson mornings between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. BCA is the owner and operator of XX Sports Radio 1090AM and 105.7FM and home of the San Diego Padres. Larson announced the new venture on XX Sports Radio’s Scott and BR Show this morning. Larson will also have regular afternoon commentaries on XX Sports’ Too Much Show, afternoons with Darren Smith and Philly Billy Werndl.
The Mark Larson Show was heard for the past three years on AM 600 KOGO. In June 2007 he chose to opt out of his KOGO contract to expand his business interests, consider a possible run for U.S. Congress, and focus on his national radio platform. “A funny thing happened on my way to Capitol Hill,” noted Larson. “John gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse, and it’s a four year deal. He also understands the call of community service and knows there may be a point in the future where I decide to run for office.” Larson will also serve as Program Director for the new station. “
The time has come for San Diego to have more local programming. With San Diego 1700, San Diegans will have a venue to discuss politics and all that is San Diego. Mark Larson brings over 30 years of San Diego programming leadership and a significant San Diego following,” said John Lynch, BCA’s President and CEO.
In addition to Mark Larson in the morning, San Diego 1700 will launch with local programming such as Ray Lucia, Bill Holland and others. The station will be adding new shows and features in coming weeks. San Diego 1700 will continue to carry the Lake Elsinore Storm and LA Galaxy play-by-play.
“This is like coming home for me. John and I worked together at KFMB in the 1970s, and I programmed that station for many years, including adding Padres baseball. So being back with the Padres and the BCA team is very exciting for me, “ Larson said.
BCA is a San Diego LLC and was formed in 2003 to purchase 1090AM; 105.7FM and 1700AM were purchased in 2005.

Cash 1700 shifts direction on August 1 to San Diego 1700 AM, and Mark Larson has been named as the new Program Director for the station at the top end of the AM dial.
Mark writes: “A funny thing happened to me on the way to Capitol Hill: I got an offer I couldn’t refuse. Visitors to LarsonBlog.com have read about what’s gone on since I chose to leave KOGO in early June. Unhappy with the corporate-mandated switch from 12-3 p.m. to 6 to 8 p.m., I opted out for a variety of reasons. I really enjoyed my time there (and the local people), but it wasn’t what I signed up for.
“It became clear to me that deciding to leave KOGO was an opportunity to take some time to sort out all of the things on my to-do list. That meant assessing everything from whether I wanted to keep doing radio in its current out-of-town-corporate-controlled environment to expanding my own media services company and speakers agency (both have been doing increasingly well in recent years). I had also been considering running for Duncan Hunter’s seat in Congress.
“But as I’ve noted on my Blog, it’s amazing to see what happens when you take a risk and step out into uncharted territory. Free agency is an wonderful thing, and people often reach out with opportunities that weren’t envisioned initially. Enter John Lynch, CEO of Broadcast Company of the Americas (owner of XX Sports 1090 and 105.7 and Cash 1700 AM). John and I worked together as part of the KFMB team in the mid 1970s and were also part of the San Diego Radio Broadcasters Association, where I was President for eight years. I have always appreciated his love for local-controlled radio, creativity, energy and entrepreneurial spirit. So it got my attention when he began asking me lots of “what if’s”. In the last couple of weeks the meetings got rolling, I agreed to do a consulting project for the stations then…well.. it just all came together and made sense… and I signed a four year deal.
“We agreed to build a new station: San Diego 1700AM.
“On August 1st, we’ll change from Cash 1700AM and I’ll begin a new live, local morning show from 5 to 9AM.
San Diego-based Ray Lucia will continue to do 9 a.m. to noon. New local programming will soon be announced in the 12-3 p.m. slot, and a variety of San Diego and Southern California shows will air 3-6 p.m., including longtime financial expert Bill Holland. Additional programs will be added in coming weeks, along with enhanced news and information.
“We’re also creating a very strong partnership with XX Sports Radio, and cross-promoting beginning today. XX Sports reports will air on San Diego 1700, and among the things) I’m looking forward to will be a reuniting of yours truly with Ted Leitner (ala our KFMB days) for a regular morning update. I will also do commentaries on XX Sports Radio starting in August.
For me, getting back together with the station that brings you Padres baseball is extra special, reminding me of the many years when we were together at KFMB. After my 31 years in San Diego, it sure seems like a natural fit.
“We’ll talk about all this as I’ll be making several appearances today on XX Sports Radio 1090AM and 105.7FM. We’ll also begin a new promotional campaign including during Padres radio broadcasts.
“In addition to doing the weekday 5-9 a.m., show, I’ll also serve as Program Director for San Diego 1700. I will continue to operate Mark Larson Media Services, Inc and do guest-hosting on the Michael Reagan national talkshow (doing so again next Monday).
“John and I also agree in understanding the “call of community service”. He knows there may be a point in the future where I decide to run for office and he’s accepted that.
“Yes, it’s been a VERY interesting few weeks “contemplating”. I feel very blessed by this unexpected opportunity, and I’m thrilled to be partnering with the BCA team!”
Thanks Mark, see you on the radio starting August 1! Stay Tuned!
