Jazz 88 Ocean Beach Festival

San Diego Blog NewsAdd to Technorati Favorites

88_festivalSeptember 9 is the date for the Third Annual Jazz 88 Ocean Beach Jazz Festival. It will be a day-long celebration of straight-ahead jazz and blues, caressed by the sun, against the background of the magnificent Pacific Ocean.

The lineup is stellar, starting with the Jazz 88 All-Star band, who bring a full sound to the stage and a musical camaraderie that comes from years of working together. The group includes by Jazz 88’s Percussive Profiles host Barry Farrar, Jr. on drums, trumpeter Steve Ebner, and tenor saxophonist Bob Campbell. the All Stars The rhythm section features one of San Diego finest pianists, Mikan Zlatkovich, as well as bassist Brian McConnell.

Next up is Hammond B-3 virtuoso, Joey DeFrancesco, whose dazzling facility has been praised by guitar great Pat Martino, himself a veteran of many classic B-3 sessions. Combining monstrous chops with a flair for showmanship and an unquenchable urge to burn, DeFrancesco almost single-handedly put the B-3 back in the public eye.

Dave Pike is a legendary vibes player, who literally came from the hey day of jazz on the popular front. Pike, who has played with the iconic Herbie Mann and Ornette Coleman, also has a tremendous reputation for creativity and unique invention, making every performance a one-of-a-kind experience. As a special treat, Dave is bringing New Orleans guitarist, Mundell Lowe, whose career inclues playing with Jazz icon, Sarah Vaughn.

To bring on the Blues, the Festival is proud to present Duke Robillard, whom the W.C. Handy Awards named “Best Blues Guitarist” in 2000 and 2001. B.B. King said Duke is “one of the great players,” and the Houston Post called him “one of God’s guitarists.” The New York Times says Robillard is “a soloist of stunning force and originality.” He is, in fact, a complete artist at the height of his power.

The headliner is Poncho Sanchez, who as leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world today, lets his congas and seasoned ensemble tell phenomenal stories. Live in concert or on recordings, they spin vivacious tales that pay homage to the glories of a half-century tradition that was born when Afro-Cuban rhythms merged with bebop. Behind the choice of every song, album title, or guest artist, there’s a story Poncho Sanchez delights in telling.

This year, Jazz 88 is keeping the tradition of broadcasting the entire Festival, live, on its sister station, WWOZ in New Orleans. The connection forged between the two stations in 2005 is stronger than ever, as the interest in Jazz around the world continues to grow.

Leitner-Hamilton To Team Up For San Diego State Football Broadcasts In 2007
Broadcasting veterans in the booth on AM 600 KOGO

leehamiltonAztec Sports Properties, a Learfield Sports’ property, and Clear Channel Broadcasting announced Thursday that Ted Leitner and Lee Hamilton will serve as the broadcast team for the upcoming 2007 San Diego State football season. The pair can be heard on AM 600 KOGO, the new radio home of Aztec athletics.

broadcaster_sd_leitnerLeitner continues his role as play-by-play announcer, signing a five-year deal to remain as the voice of both Aztec football and men’s basketball. Hamilton will provide football color commentary this season, while working as on-air talent at both KOGO and AM 570 Radio in Los Angeles.

“It is very exciting to have two people of this caliber in the same booth at the same time,” said SDSU Director of Athletics Jeff Schemmel. “Aztec fans will benefit by having two of the premier announcers in San Diego calling our games.”

A legendary sports personality, Ted is one of the most recognizable media figures in San Diego, where he has served as the voice of the Aztecs, Chargers and Padres on radio and television. The Oklahoma State graduate has been a part of SDSU broadcasts as far back as 1978, and his most recent stint includes working the last two Aztec football and three men’s basketball campaigns.

He is currently part of the team for the San Diego Padres baseball team.

Lee Hacksaw has also been a mainstay in the San Diego radio community, calling both San Diego State football and San Diego Chargers games. He has broadcasted games for USC, Arizona State and the Seattle Seahawks and began his career calling college basketball, minor league baseball and hockey contests, as well as playing host to several sports talk shows.

“We are thrilled to have these two veteran announcers together for the upcoming football season,” said Bob Bolinger, vice president and market manager for Clear Channel San Diego.

In addition to Leitner and Hamilton, Mike Costa returns for his second stint as sideline reporter for all Aztec football home and away games, having served a similar role from 2002-04.

This past March, Aztec Sports Properties and Clear Channel Broadcasting in San Diego, reached a five-year agreement to make AM 600 KOGO the Aztecs’ flagship station beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. KOGO is the highest rated AM station in the San Diego market and will air all SDSU football and men’s basketball games, in addition to weekly coach’s shows and 15 additional live Aztec sporting events.

San Diego State opens its 2007 football campaign on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they travel to Seattle, Wash., for the first-ever meeting with Washington State beginning at 4 p.m.

Keeping it 1360

San Diego Blog NewsAdd to Technorati Favorites

San Diego Needs KLSD

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

klsd The decision may have been made, here’s hoping that 1360KLSD stays with Stacy Taylor, Ed Schultz, and Jon Elliott.

Who watches the watchmen?

Obviously ’something’ needs to happen at KLSD and various ideas have been tossed around. Sports, combo talk, or a radical gutting of the station. What happens will depend on the decision makers at Clear Channel Radio. Remember, it’s their station and if tomorrow they say “Punk country!” that’s the new format.

Meanwhile AM 1360 is moving forward with a 50,000 watt application to put the transmitter in Santee at the KSDO AM 1130 transmitter site. CCU kept the transmitter when the station was sold a few years back to a Spanish-language religious operator. The seven tower operation could house both AM 1130 and 1360. North County residents can attest that a station in Arizona near sunrise and sunset is on top of KLSD, making San Diego’s choice very unlistenable.

What needs to be done? Passionate fans will tell you nothing. Book keepers will tell you (if they could) that the station is not performing — bringing in the money. Monday’s rally of support was truly a grass roots organization that the local management on participated in after the event was planned by fans outside of the station. Cliff Albert remains sincere that the format should remain in San Diego. As a program director for Clear Channel in San Diego, his decision, while good, may be over ruled by others.

Regardless of what happens in the business model of AM 1360, Stacy Taylor and crew, Ed Schultz, and Jon Elliott need to remain on the airwaves. After all everyone needs watchers watching the watchmen.

Stay tuned!

As ear witnessed on the radio today, the listeners of the station told the staff and management that they want to progressive talk to stick around.

klsdMorning host Stacy Taylor emphasized that the proposed change had nothing to do with Program Director Cliff Albert nor was this a ploy by Clear Channel Communications in San Diego as a publicity stunt. NATIONAL RADIO HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES CLASS OF 2007

Jerry Coleman, Jimmy Durante, Richard Durham, Dan Ingram, Marian McPartland to be inducted November 3

rhofOne has broadcast baseball for more than 40 years, one is a legendary radio comedian, and the others a rock radio pioneer, a jazz icon and a groundbreaking African-American writer/producer. Although with different backgrounds, these radio legends all share a common connection – they are all upcoming inductees into the National Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago.

“This prestigious and diverse quintet was elected from a highly competitive field of nominees and we are excited to honor them,” said MBC President Bruce DuMont. “A nationally broadcast ceremony on November 3rd will spread word of their life long accomplishments to radio lovers all across America.”

The 2007 inductees into America’s only National Radio Hall of Fame are:

JERRY COLEMAN
Jerry Coleman has been broadcasting baseball for more than 40 years. The former New York Yankee infielder has been the voice of the San Diego Padres on XPRS/San Diego for 32 seasons, the last 23 consecutively. Known for his concise play-by-play and trademark calls, such as “Hang a Star” and “Oh, Doctor!”, Coleman was also a regular announcer for the CBS Radio Game of the Week.

JIMMY DURANTE (deceased)
A legendary vaudevillian turned 1940s radio comedian and singer known for his mangled English and raspy voice, Durante began as a piano player on Coney Island. He was a welcome and regular guest on many radio programs. After filling in for Eddie Cantor on The Chase and Sanborn Hour in 1933, he was offered his own program. The Jimmy Durante Show enjoyed success both as a solo act and as a comedy duo, with Garry Moore serving as Durante’s on-air sidekick from 1943 to 1947.

RICHARD DURHAM (deceased)
Born in Mississippi and raised in Chicago, Richard Durham wrote and produced the groundbreaking radio drama Destination Freedom. Durham began his career during the Depression with the Writers Project of the WPA and later wrote for CBS affiliate WBBM/Chicago. As sole writer and producer for Destination Freedom, his goal was to combat the negative stereotypes of blacks in the media. The series debuted on WMAQ/Chicago in June of 1948 and included 91 episodes showcasing the lives of prominent black Americans.

DAN INGRAM
Ingram was a rock radio pioneer and is considered by some as the best Top 40 DJ of all time. Born and raised in Flushing, Queens, he mixed humor with an edgy, irreverent style and spent more than 40 years behind the microphone beginning at WNRC/New Rochelle, NY. He rose to fame in the 1960s as a rock DJ on WABC/New York where he stayed for 20 years until the station changed formats. He spent the last 12 years of his career at WCBS-FM/ New York before retiring in 2003.

MARIAN MCPARTLAND
Host of Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz for more than 25 years on National Public Radio, McPartland taught herself how to play piano at age three. Since 1978 the English born jazz musician has hosted one of the longest running weekly programs on NPR. McPartland is revered for her own talent and welcomes a wide range of guests to her program, including legendary jazz artists and fledgling jazz talents.

Sean Hannity of ABC Radio and Fox News Channel will host the one-hour induction ceremony on Saturday November 3rd at 7 p.m. Pacific. ABC Radio will produce and distribute the live program from the Renaissance Chicago Hotel.

Tickets for the black-tie induction gala and broadcast may be purchased online at www.radiohof.org or by calling toll free 866-860-1640.

Rally this morning for 1360KLSD

They better get more than 10 people out there! ~ Stacy Taylor

Save our audio in this market! ~ Ed Schultz

UPDATE: Rally a success; well more than 50 folks show up. Stacy said that there is hope that “this decision can be turned around.” San Diego TV and radio icon, Bree Walker, Jon Elliott of KLSD, and Mike Aguirre, San Diego City attorney, show support.

stacytaylorKLSD-AM 1360 has been in a round of rumors, first posted at Radio-Info. The current programming comprising of Air America, Ed Schultz and mornings being kicked off by Stacy Taylor is going to be modified.

From the 1360KLSD web site: “KLSD thanks all of our listeners for your recent concern and support regarding rumors circulating about a possible format change with AM 1360. While various options are under consideration, we want the Progressive voice to remain heard loud and clear in San Diego.”

am1360This morning at 7:30, a rally, will be held at the Clear Channel Communications San Diego headquarters. There was hope that Air America and San Diego radio and TV icon Bree Walker will attend.

Stacy commented that “they better get more than 10 people out there” in reference to the morning rally.

Last Friday, Stacy talked about the proposed change and Ed Schultz called in the last hour of his Friday show. Ed told Stacy and the listening audience, “I’ve been down this road before …. and you have to invest in the radio station and in the people. This is a battle for all Progressives to get in.”

Both hosts agreed that to be successful, there is no need to bring back the fairness doctrine. Ed also said that he has had better ratings than Sean Hannity, heard on 760 KFMB.

Ed also suggested that for the rally to be effective is to let the advertisers know that you have heard their commercials and thank them.

Officially, Clear Channel Radio has not commented on the proposed change, or if a change would happen.

sd1700Mark Larson is keeping busy schedule at San Diego 1700 AM. He hasn’t officially ruled out running for Congress yet there he is, out on the campaign stump. Last week he was invited to emcee GOP candidate Rudy Giuliani’s appearance in Del Mar. Over the weekend Mark was emcee at former Gov. Pete Wilson’s big birthday bash at the Westgate, attended by hundreds of well-wishers.

While Mark headed up those festivities, earlier in the day KOGO’s Roger Hedgecock emceed the unveiling of the Wilson statue near Horton Plaza. As the statue was unveiled, a protest occurred nearby. Mark was among the dignitaries at the Horton event and commented at the party, “I know Roger loves confronting those protesters, so I opted for the birthday. Besides, he looks better in a helmet”.

Mark told SDRadio.net that he and Hedgecock are still good friends, though “once I opted out of KOGO a few weeks ago, I realized I don’t have to mow his lawn on Saturdays anymore.” He also adds that he was amazed how most news reports of the statue event ignored the fact that the pro-illegal immigration protesters screamed, chanted and taunted at full volume throughout the Wilson ceremony… even during the American National Anthem. “Pretty pathetic,” Larson noted.

Starting today at noon on San Diego 1700 AM is the addition of “New York Myke” Shelby to the local line-up. Mark, also PD of the station notes that “he’s from New York, but he’s all San Diego… as evidenced by his great work to save the Mt. Soledad war memorial. ” Myke’s new show will air weekdays from noon to 1 p.m., and joins the expanding line-up that also has Dennis Miller and Michael Reagan. Myke’s radio show starts early next week.

Starting next week, it’s POST-LABOR DAY MORNING WARS: Should be interesting when the battle of “who’s been in San Diego longer” heats up between San Diego 1700 AM’s Mark Larson, 760 KFMB’s Rick Roberts, KLSD’s Stacy Taylor, and KOGO’s Chip Franklin. Stay Tuned!
