UPDATE: Rally a success; well more than 50 folks show up. Stacy said that there is hope that “this decision can be turned around.” San Diego TV and radio icon, Bree Walker, Jon Elliott of KLSD, and Mike Aguirre, San Diego City attorney, show support.
KLSD-AM 1360 has been in a round of rumors, first posted at Radio-Info. The current programming comprising of Air America, Ed Schultz and mornings being kicked off by Stacy Taylor is going to be modified.
From the 1360KLSD web site: “KLSD thanks all of our listeners for your recent concern and support regarding rumors circulating about a possible format change with AM 1360. While various options are under consideration, we want the Progressive voice to remain heard loud and clear in San Diego.”
This morning at 7:30, a rally, will be held at the Clear Channel Communications San Diego headquarters. There was hope that Air America and San Diego radio and TV icon Bree Walker will attend.
Stacy commented that “they better get more than 10 people out there” in reference to the morning rally.
Last Friday, Stacy talked about the proposed change and Ed Schultz called in the last hour of his Friday show. Ed told Stacy and the listening audience, “I’ve been down this road before …. and you have to invest in the radio station and in the people. This is a battle for all Progressives to get in.”
Both hosts agreed that to be successful, there is no need to bring back the fairness doctrine. Ed also said that he has had better ratings than Sean Hannity, heard on 760 KFMB.
Ed also suggested that for the rally to be effective is to let the advertisers know that you have heard their commercials and thank them.
Officially, Clear Channel Radio has not commented on the proposed change, or if a change would happen.
Stay tuned!
This is the last week of KOGO’s News First, hosted by Dave Mason, Mark Evans, and LaDona Harvey. Next week Chip Franklin steps in at 5 a.m. starting Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Dave Mason has been, as long as I’ve been covering San Diego Radio from SDRadio.net is the go-to utility man, the company minded guy, and just all around “Mr. Nice Guy”.
Dave’s long and storied radio career started in New York, and soon found him in various locations before landing in San Diego. Dave writes on the KOGO web site: “In 1999, a dream came true-the chance to head west to the most beautiful location in the world, San Diego. First job was APD/Mornings at KJQY. Then, PD/AM at Oldies KOCL. Then we were shuffled to 99.3-a Mexican signal-and became XHOCL. I also host “The Beatles Radio Show” on Classic Rock 101.5 KGB. Now, I’m the morning news co-host at AM600 KOGO, as well as voice-tracking for other Clear Channel stations in Dallas, Santa Barbara, Durango, CO/Farmington NM, and Huntsville, AL.”
You can also see Dave on-air hosting at KPBS-TV 15 occasionally.
I’ll catch up with Dave tomorrow over a plate of fine barbeque near Sports Arena …..
San Diego radio icon Gary Allyn has been found on the internet! Visit Gary at his spot on the surf. Gary writes about commercials: “Have you heard the latest? Commercials that is. They’re getting shorter and more frequent. I think this is an idea whose time has come. Especially to Radio, a medium in search of more revenue and less clutter. These new “quickie” ads are referred to as “adlets” or “blinklets”.” Read more at GaryAllynsRadiOpinion.
Mark Larson is keeping busy schedule at San Diego 1700 AM. He hasn’t officially ruled out running for Congress yet there he is, out on the campaign stump. Last week he was invited to emcee GOP candidate Rudy Giuliani’s appearance in Del Mar. Over the weekend Mark was emcee at former Gov. Pete Wilson’s big birthday bash at the Westgate, attended by hundreds of well-wishers.
While Mark headed up those festivities, earlier in the day KOGO’s Roger Hedgecock emceed the unveiling of the Wilson statue near Horton Plaza. As the statue was unveiled, a protest occurred nearby. Mark was among the dignitaries at the Horton event and commented at the party, “I know Roger loves confronting those protesters, so I opted for the birthday. Besides, he looks better in a helmet”.
Mark told SDRadio.net that he and Hedgecock are still good friends, though “once I opted out of KOGO a few weeks ago, I realized I don’t have to mow his lawn on Saturdays anymore.” He also adds that he was amazed how most news reports of the statue event ignored the fact that the pro-illegal immigration protesters screamed, chanted and taunted at full volume throughout the Wilson ceremony… even during the American National Anthem. “Pretty pathetic,” Larson noted.
Starting today at noon on San Diego 1700 AM is the addition of “New York Myke” Shelby to the local line-up. Mark, also PD of the station notes that “he’s from New York, but he’s all San Diego… as evidenced by his great work to save the Mt. Soledad war memorial. ” Myke’s new show will air weekdays from noon to 1 p.m., and joins the expanding line-up that also has Dennis Miller and Michael Reagan. Myke’s radio show starts early next week.
Starting next week, it’s POST-LABOR DAY MORNING WARS: Should be interesting when the battle of “who’s been in San Diego longer” heats up between San Diego 1700 AM’s Mark Larson, 760 KFMB’s Rick Roberts, KLSD’s Stacy Taylor, and KOGO’s Chip Franklin. Stay Tuned!
HDRadio on AM, under current FCC rules, must stop between sunset and sunrise. Starting next month, AM radio stations will be able to broadcast full time using the HDRadio digital broadcast. As broadcasters brace for a round of complaints from listeners, one thing is for sure: It’s going to stop night time DXing of stations. Stay Digitally Tuned.
Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels today! See YOU on the radio today and here later in the broadcast week.
