Keeping it 1360

San Diego Needs KLSD

The decision may have been made, here’s hoping that 1360KLSD stays with Stacy Taylor, Ed Schultz, and Jon Elliott.
Who watches the watchmen?
Obviously ’something’ needs to happen at KLSD and various ideas have been tossed around. Sports, combo talk, or a radical gutting of the station. What happens will depend on the decision makers at Clear Channel Radio. Remember, it’s their station and if tomorrow they say “Punk country!” that’s the new format.
Meanwhile AM 1360 is moving forward with a 50,000 watt application to put the transmitter in Santee at the KSDO AM 1130 transmitter site. CCU kept the transmitter when the station was sold a few years back to a Spanish-language religious operator. The seven tower operation could house both AM 1130 and 1360. North County residents can attest that a station in Arizona near sunrise and sunset is on top of KLSD, making San Diego’s choice very unlistenable.
What needs to be done? Passionate fans will tell you nothing. Book keepers will tell you (if they could) that the station is not performing — bringing in the money. Monday’s rally of support was truly a grass roots organization that the local management on participated in after the event was planned by fans outside of the station. Cliff Albert remains sincere that the format should remain in San Diego. As a program director for Clear Channel in San Diego, his decision, while good, may be over ruled by others.
Regardless of what happens in the business model of AM 1360, Stacy Taylor and crew, Ed Schultz, and Jon Elliott need to remain on the airwaves. After all everyone needs watchers watching the watchmen.
