Two months. That’s the time frame Clear Channel Management have let out that 1360 KLSD “might” change. Several formats have been floated, listeners rally around their voice, and management drop an “L” into their title: Manglement.
This isn’t fair. Don’t blame the program director, who is wanting to keep the voices of Stacy Taylor, Ed Schultz, and Jon Elliott on the air. Blame manglement for dragging this through the days, weeks, and now months.
What ever course they take, it shouldn’t take this long. Again, it’s not fair to on-air staff, syndicated shows, and the most important key in running a radio station: the listeners.
What ever the course KLSD takes — please go with it. Talent on-air and those who have been tapped for a new format deserve the respect. Those behind the mic, those who do the sales, and those who keep the station on the air are the companies key assets. That way the listeners will not have to wonder….

Shotgun Tom Kelly was named as Radio and Records Classic Hits Personality/Show of the Year. Congratulations Shotgun!
He has completed ten years at LA’s K-EARTH 101 and can be heard in the afternoon drive home in most of San Diego. Shotgun got his start in San Diego and was heard on KOGO, KCBQ and other stations in the market. His trademark style complements his hat — it’s legendary.

Fans who want to hear him live can point their radio to AM 570 KLAC as Dan hosts the morning drive. His show starts Monday, Oct. 1. Visit DanPatrick.com and sample the video clips of what he’s been doing since leaving ESPN Radio. The best: involve his dog Lou.

Developing: Scot Tempesta says he was “fired” on Friday from KLSD.
As quiet as the rumors about shifting programming were the past two weeks the roar on the streets today: AM 1360 is preparing to shift programming, most likely Monday, Oct. 15. A new set of call letters are expected to used.
The new programming has not been confirmed and is about three weeks away, according to station insiders.

The World-Famous GelderHead Thought Of The Day: Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve. ~ Mary Kay Ash
It is probably one of the best shows to be on the radio waves in a very long time. Bob Costas hits the airwaves every weekend and Southern California can tune in on KLAC AM 570 or XM satellite radio channel 165. This weekend will have documentarian Ken Burns. He will discuss his latest project, The War. The program will debuts on KPBS-TV on September 23. The War is a seven-part series that tells the story of the second world war through personal accounts from four American towns.
Bob Costas on the Radio is a two-hour weekend show features conversations with news makers and significant figures from sports and other walks of life. The show also includes Bob’s own commentaries and observations.
KGTV’s weatherman Loren Nancarrow was cited for misdemeanor battery after the events on Tuesday. The video of the event was posted in Wednesday’s edition of SDRadio. Loren answered questions at the harbor police after a protester claimed he was attacked by him. The case — if any — goes before the district attorney. The disputes centers on the parent company of Channel 10 and the local labor union and has been going on for at least two years.
Word on the street is that Dave Palet and Jeff Dotseth will hit the airwaves next week. Where? ESPN 710 on Wednesday night from 7 to 11 p.m. Meanwhile, the banter of another sports station in the San Diego market have been quiet lately. ESPN 710 is LA based …. Stay Tuned.
David Tanny of SanDiegoRadioNews.com reports that San Diego Pirate Radio at 96.9 FM is on the airwaves. The location is most likely towards the South Bay area. Stay Tuned and follow the FCC bouncing ball of fines. The previous landlord that hosted Pirate Radio was also fined.
Noted: With nighttime HDRadio, ESPN 800 has gone from ‘just listenable’ to totally unlistenable in North County. KABC-AM at 790 and KGO-AM at 810 serves up the hash. Only known cure is to scramble up some eggs with this mess and enjoy it with the hash. World Series, for the most part, will not be on the AM dial in San Diego for the fall classic.
Enter the DMZ: Political and funny and locally available on San Diego AM 1700, Dennis Miller is available every weekday from 2 to 4 p.m. At the high end of the AM radio dial, the two hour adventure in to comedy reality should be a must stop. Dennis was previously available on the defunct 103.7 Free FM. Today, Dennis has Ken Burns on to discuss his seven-part series on the second world war, and U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter from Michigan.
First thing this morning Mark Larson of San Diego AM 1700 will announce his upcoming Capitol Tour. Mark heads to Washington and will broadcast from The Heritage Foundation’s headquarters. Mark hints that he’ll have political insiders and Beltway Bandits on.
He will have unique access to key decision-makers in Washington, and is the only general market radio host in the USA who is also a member of the influential Council for National Policy. Prior to the capitol visit, CNP is holding meetings in Salt Lake City, which Mark will attend.
In addition to doing his exclusive broadcasts, he will also visit wounded warriors at Walter Reed Medical Center and expand his work as a director of “Enough Is Enough”. That is one of the leading organization promoting child safety on the internet. Also: Mark is slated to again emcee the National Right to Life dinner on October 2. He’s had the assignment ever since being asked to step in for his friend, actor Ben Stein, a few years ago.
The Washington, D.C., broadcasts for Mark help to kick-off his 32nd year on the radio in San Diego. This is believed to be unmatched in local broadcasting. Radio trade magazine “Radio & Records” named Mark as one of only twelve “Local Legends” for 2006 and 2007.
(Pictured is president candidate Rudy Giuliani with Mark Larson at a Del Mar function last month.)

Last weekend, AM stations could extend their digital broadcast day beyond local sunset. Locally, KOGO-AM is presently the only AM station with HDRadio. Scott Rice, Clear Channel San Diego’s Chief Operator, Staff Engineer, and Station Historian writes about the latest milestone for AM 600: “The greatest station in the history of broadcasting, AM 600 KOGO, is now HD all the time,” Scott said.
“The FCC approved night time HD and it became law (on) September 15th. KOGO of course has been on the cutting edge of broadcast technology since the very beginning in 1925 on the top of
the U.S. Grant Hotel with the brand new Western Electric studios and transmitter. KOGO was the first commercial broadcast station in San Diego (as 1220 KFVW), KOGO was the first network affiliate in San Diego (NBC).”
Scott also researched that “KOGO-FM (94.1) was the first FM station in San Diego, KOGO was the first to broadcast in AM Stereo (the Kahn System), and now of course KOGO has become the first AM-HD (IBOC) in San Diego.”
IBOC is “In Band, On Channel” as the standard for HDRadio for U.S. radio stations.
Scott Fybush who has a passion for photographing transmitter sites, says that KOGO is also home to “KSON-FM 97.3 atop one tower and KLNV 106.5 atop the other.” KOGO’s AM design has the 5kw hugging the Pacific Coast. (Click on the map for a larger picture of the KOGO coverage pattern.)
Also noted: For the seventh consecutive year Scott Fybush presents, the Tower Site Calendar. It is ready to grace the walls of your office, rack room or transmitter shack - and Scott promises that the 2008 edition is better than ever!
Tower Site Calendar 2008 features 14 full-color, high-quality images of transmitter sites from coast (WGAN Portland) to coast (KAST Astoria, our cover model).
Visit Fybush.com for ordering information. Order by October 1 to assure 2007 prices.

The world-famous GelderHead Thought Of The Day: When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
KyXy Cafe & HoS: Charlie Quinn Operations Manager of CBS Radio in San Diego announced that KyXy and Radio Sophie have launched their HD2 multicast. Charlie writes: “On Friday morning 9/14 at 6 a.m. KyXy and KSCF began broadcasting our HD2 formats.
“KyXy’s HD-2 station is called “The Cafe” and features an eclectic blend of coffee house music including contemporary pop to blues, reggae, ambient chill, even classic 40s and 50s vocalists like Sarah Vaughn, Bessie Smith and Cab Calloway.
“KSCF’s HD-2 station is “House of Sophie” targeting what internet radio considers one of it’s fastest growing subculture formats, Electronica. “H.O.S.” features the most popular product from 15 electronica subgroupings including Trance, Chillout, Hard Dance, Ambient, Pop Synth, etc. “H.O.S.” is mood sensitive making it both compatible at work and when it’s time to play.”
Both stations will be offered with the option of live streaming audio through their respective analog/HD-1 websites. The Cafe will be available at KyXy.com, and HoS at Radio Sophie.
KGTV’s Loren Nancarrow can give a great weather forecast — except when there is a group protesting the station.
Last weekend I noted how the AM band was full of hash — scrambling the long distance reception of some stations. Last night my catch of HDRadio stations on the AM band included:
KOGO-AM San Diego 600
KCBS-AM San Francisco 740
KGO-AM San Francisco 810
KOA-AM Denver 850
KFWB-AM 980 Los Angeles
The stations outside of San Diego were strong enough to have their call letters and text displayed on my HDRadio receiver. KOA, from Denver, was the furtherest east station I could get in HDRadio. I also tried other high-power stations, but the stations were not strong enough (For example, 1520 KOKC did not display to call letters, just an asterisk. Likewise for 770 KKOB.)
Meanwhile, there is some backlash from Mexico and Canada governments on the full-time AM broadcast of the “standard”. Both countries blame the sideband for limiting their reception of local stations adjacent to the blow-torch signals. You can hear the hash at 590 AM, and 730 AM after 9 p.m.
The countries are trying to get border stations, such as KOGO and possibly the LA-based ones, to turn off the HDRadio signal after local sunset.
Noted: LA’s KFI was previously HDRadio prior to the AM antenna being toppled by a small aircraft. Once the tower is rebuilt, HDRadio broadcast will resume. Currently, KFI, the nation’s most listened to AM station, is at 25,000 watts. The tower can be seen near the Los Angeles county line, off the 5-freeway and near the Knott’s Berry Farm exit. As always, stay digitally tuned.
It was pure magic at 92.5 FM on Monday morning. Trisha Lord St. George writes that she took Limerick to see Jagger and Kristi. The 92.5 morning crew had a good time with the adoption ready dog. Trisha adds, “”Limerick” and his eight siblings came to Helen Woodward Animal Center from another Southern California Shelter that was reaching capacity and had exhausted other resources for adoption. About 80-percent of HWAC’s adoptions are pets (like “Limerick” and his siblings known as “The ‘L’ Puppies”) that have been transferred from other shelters or rescue groups. All are given a second chance to become the love of YOUR life!”
Jagger & Kristi are supporters of the Lions, Tigers and Bears Big Cat Sanctuary in Alpine. Founder, Bobbi Brink recently rescued three lion cubs and they are now in Alpine. The enclosure for these cubs is almost finished. However, work needs to begin on an exercise enclosure for all the cats at LTB and they need your help.
If you haven’t seen the Bengal Tigers and Lion Cubs at LTB yet, your chance to visit all the big cats and the cubs is coming up at the 4th Annual Between The Stripes Gala on Sunday, October 7. MAGIC 92.5 is the official radio sponsor and Jagger & Kristi are announcing the event. The event is held on the lawn at LTB and it’s fun for the entire family. Get your tickets now and help support Lions, Tigers and Bears! (Pictured is Jagger & Kristi with Bakari.)
Former ESPN radio host Dan Patrick is slated to start his national show on Monday, Oct. 1. XX Sports Radio has announced that they will carry the show in San Diego. The program will be digitally delayed and start at 2 p.m. Also noted: the daily videos at his web site are worth a stop — every day.
World Famous Shotgun Tom Kelly writes about his weekend adventures in LA: “K-Earth 101’s 35th Anniversary Concert was so much fun for everyone. The station hired a television director and a crew. Gary Bryan and myself interviewed the Four Tops, The Stylistics, War, The Doobie Brothers and Chicago on mykearth101.com. We did an on camera web cast, so people at home, on their computers, could watch the interviews. In between interviews I went out into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater to meet and to talk to as many people who were watching the concert as possible. I even went up to the seats that were furthest from the stage. Everybody I talked to said “Shotgun, I just want to thank K-Earth 101 for putting on one of the best concerts I have ever attended.” All in all everybody seemed to have a great time.
“I made my way backstage to watch Chicago finish their set and the bass player, Jason Scheff came off stage and said “Shotgun, when I was 16 growing up in San Diego, I used to listen to you on KCBQ Radio. (Pictured: Shotgun Tom with Jason) I used to call in for the contests and win stuff from you. One of the things that I won was a Chicago album. Little did I know that one day I would be hired to be a part of that band and have been for 22 years. You made a great impression on me and I thank you for that.”
Shotgun adds: “It is nice to know that I made an impression on someone’s life.” Today, Jason is the bass player for Chicago. Shotgun included “Everybody that I have talked to said that the concert was huge success and they were thoroughly entertained.”
Shotgun Tom can be heard 4 to 8 p.m. on KEARTH 101. Prior to moving his microphone to LA, Shotgun was heard practically every where in San Diego including KCBQ, KOGO, and other fine stations in the market.
OH MY: LA was not big enough for 104.3 KBIG-FM.
On Monday, long time on-air personality Charlie Tuna signed the format off as 104.3 My FM entered the airwaves at 10 a.m.
Tuna may be known to listeners of Armed Forces Radio for the over 2,000 radio shows he did. Stay Tuna‘d as the morning host and voice over specialist is expected to fill a roll at Clear Channel Los Angeles.
San Diego was home of My 94.1 before the station was re-branded as Star 94.1.
Fred Lewis: Paul Williams writes: “It’s sad to hear about the passing of Fred Lewis, he was indeed a radio icon in San Diego. I remember, as a child, listening to him do the news on KGB-AM, and I’ve pretty much followed his career ever since, on TV as well as on radio. He had a long and prolific career in the local market, and he deserves to be honored for it, but it would have been nice for him to have been recognized for his work, say…before his death!!!! It’s like a pastor that I know up here in L.A. would say: You’ve got to give folks their flowers while they can still smell them!
In any case, I and many other longtime San Diegans will never forget him or his great work! In fact, there should be a San Diego Radio & TV Hall of Fame to honor all those, like Fred Lewis, who greatly contributed to keeping America’s Finest City informed and entertained for decades. It’s such a shame that nothing like that exists down there, but it should, believe me!!!”
Mark Larson writes about Fred: “Fred was a consummate pro, always consistent. He did a great service to San Diego with his TV series, archiving important local stories for the ages.
“No one could match his “tones” when he spoke. I always remember Joe Bauer (of “Hudson & Bauer”) joking about Fred in the year when he did PA work at the Sports Arena.. such as at Clippers games. Joe would imitate “Coaching for the Clippers, Paul Silas— and gee, don’t I sound terrific?”
Jack Hayes writes: “I just read about the passing of Fred Lewis. A great voice and the consummate professional. My condolences.”

Streaming on the ‘net: SoundExchange announced on Tuesday that significant numbers of small commercial webcasters have signed agreements that allows them to continue operating through 2010 with essentially the same terms they have enjoyed under the Small Webcaster Settlement Act (SWSA). These agreements - sent in late August and signed individually with each webcaster - guarantee the same rates through 2010 that qualified small webcasters have received since 1998 for the use of sound recordings owned by SoundExchange members. The agreements are retroactive to January 1, 2006, which is the beginning of the current rate period, and continue through December 31, 2010, at which time new rates will be set either through negotiation or by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB).
“Giving small webcasters more time to build their businesses with below-market rates is
something Members of Congress wanted us to get done, and we have,” said John Simson, Executive Director of SoundExchange. “We hope that these small webcasters will continue to provide innovative kinds of programming and a rich diversity of music.”
Twenty-four small webcasters have already signed the agreements with others indicating they are in the process of signing. Some opted not to sign the agreements because their business models benefit more from the regular commercial rates (due to their size and the difference in minimum
payments). Others did not sign because they operate via webcast aggregators who handle payments on their behalf.
Qualified small commercial webcasters who accepted the offer are now able to stream sound recordings of any and all SoundExchange members at subsidized rates. SoundExchange represents more than 28,000 recording artists and 3,500 record labels, including all the major
recording companies. As part of the agreement, small webcasters (defined as those earning $1.25 million or less in total revenues) would pay royalty fees of 10 or 12 percent of revenue. The agreement also includes a usage cap to ensure that this subsidy is used only by webcasters of
a certain size who are forming or strengthening their businesses.
San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson, in the middle of the issues every morning on the new talk station, was also in the middle of Emmy Weekend in LA. He emceed the Media Fellowship International “Awards Weekend Praise Brunch” at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The 9th annual gathering salutes people of faith in the media, and was attended by over 350 people, including several Emmy and Grammy winners, as well as Oscar nominees. It was the seventh time he’s emceed the special event. Also noted that Mark had on Councilmember Donna Frye who is trying broker a meeting between Mark and Congressman Bob Filner.

Radio icon, and a man who stated he only wanted to tell the truth, Fred Lewis has died at the age of 78. He was best known for his work on The Heart of San Diego and publicly said he was proud of the 653 interviews that were produced.
He was also the San Diego Gulls hockey team announcer in the 1960s. The San Diego Sports Arena also hired him as the public address announcer; and he was also the voice of the San Diego Rockets NBA team.
His radio ties are deep as he had a lasting mark at KSON, KGB-AM, KDEO, and KSDO. At 1130 KSDO, he was part of the original team that introduced a news-talk to the San Diego radio audience.
For fifteen years he was the sports director of KSDS Jazz 88. He also did a series of TV shows for Cox Cable.
The San Diego city council has declared that Sept. 18 as Fred Lewis Day. The docket can be read here.

On Sept. 14, the FCC let AM stations start full-time HDRadio broadcasting after sunset. Reception check last night from Oceanside had KFWB-AM in LA, and KFBK-AM in Sacremento two stations on the AM band receivable in HD.
Locally, KOGO did not have the HD indicator on; however the roll out nationwide is expected. Mexico has objected to full-time HDRadio broadcast on the AM band claiming reception issues to stations adjacent to the HDRadio broadcast. For example, KOGO-HD would make AM 590 and AM 610 have hash sounds in the AM 600 night time pattern. The night time pattern for KOGO south of San Diego is extensive.
Previously, the FCC mandated that the digital transmission on AM had to stop at sunset and could begin at sunrise local time. Last winter, I was able to get KOA 850 from Denver in HDRadio prior to sunrise here. The listening to 840 and 860 AM was difficult as the HDRadio sideband hash was underneath the analog signals.
Stay Digitally Tuned as night time reception of distant and local stations on the AM band can become difficult …..

San Diego Classic Rock station KGB placed an ad in the Sports section of Friday’s Boston Globe calling the New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick “Belicheat” and showing support for the San Diego Chargers on their trip to Foxboro this weekend.
The Chargers and The Patriots face-off Sunday night on national television just days after the NFL opened an investigation into alleged acts of cheating on the New England coaching staff.
The ad invites readers to engage in some smack talk leading up to this weekend’s game. Supporters of both teams can log on to 101KGB.com and use the keyword “cheat” to gain access to the message board.
The game will be on KGB’s sister station Rock 105.

She’s the voice of reason in a morning show that has the largest audience in the country morning. KSON’s San Diego has Morgan to keep Cliff Dumas and Bill Tanner in line. As the antics play out on KSON, she might be on a cliff and needing a tanner to keep those boys in line. After all, it’s just good country morning fun, sunny side up with a slice of good country cookin’.
Morgan has been in radio over 25 years, working in North Carolina, Florida and New York and KSON. She’s on the west coast for the very first time and she has adapted to ‘Sunny & 70’ very easily! Morgan has been hosting and co-hosting morning shows for over 15 years. During that time, she has been very busy in the radio field. Morgan has won an advertising Addy Award for producing a TV commercial for a station in New York; won a CMA Award for Promotion of the Year in 1997; and honored with two CMA nominations for Broadcast Personality of the Year –one in 2003 and last year.
When not putting up with Cliff and Tanner, Morgan loves sports, especially hockey, football and NASCAR racing. She especially frequents Padres baseball games and Chargers football games.
Hear Morgan, along with the award winning Cliff and Tanner, mornings on KSON.

A grassroots organization is making sure their voice is being heard and felt at Clear Channel Communications‘ San Diego operation. Tomorrow morning another rally will take place starting at 7:30 at 9660 Granite Ridge Drive in San Diego. As before, the plan is to show support for the talk station. The last trend for the station was not favorable and there has been a lot of talk in and out of the station that a format change is in the works.
As before, the rally is planned by listeners outside of the station.
At 10 a.m., Ralph Rubio, will be at the Rubio’s in Mira Mesa. The Rubio Corporation is one of the advertisers at 1360 KLSD. Planners of the rally say “This is a great opportunity to thank Ralph for his company’s continued support of KLSD and encourage him to continue to do so.”
