He’s the winner of the prestigious national 2007 and 2004 Edward R. Murrow Awards for Writing and Overall Excellence. Starting tomorrow morning, Chip Franklin takes to the morning drive at 5 a.m. on KOGO. He is replacing News First at AM 600. In the four hour drive time, Chip’s show, according to the KOGO website, will have many of the features from the news program.
Last Friday Chip joked with Roger Hedgecock that there will be two twenty minute newscast per hour and promos. Airchecks of his WBAL and WMAL shows indicates that San Diego will be in for an issue orientated drive with a moderate dose of humor.
Don Ayers, Chip Franklin’s producer at WBAL radio, will be his show producer according to DCRTV.com web site.
The show promises events of the day generate the majority of talk, and calls. In his Baltimore radio stand at WBAL, he had congressmen, senators, governors, mayors, and “the people they screw over” dominating the discussions.
No stranger to television, Chip has appeared on The O’Reilly Factor, CNN, Paula Zahn, Fox and Friends, The Situation Room, and MSNBC. About appearing on the no-spin O’Reilly Factor, Chip indicates he is nuts.
His TV series called Curb Your Intelligence was a random on-the-street interviews that generated national buzz. The show was best known for asking if they still blamed Barack Obama for 9/11. He has also written for The Tonight Show and has done stand-up comedy on the east coast.
While at WBAL, a show featuring the Baltimore police commissioner was subpoenaed by a federal grand jury.
Capital Hill papers noted that “Franklin adds a rare dose of irony to a medium that rarely trusts it’s audience to get the joke,” from The Washington Post. Also noted was the Democrats Radio Truth Squad that “Chip is a provocative host. Most radio shows don’t even talk about issues facing our state–Chip’s show does, whether you agree with him or not.”
