Chip Franklin Mornings debuted on Tuesday and immediately the host hit the phones talking with the state’s energy coordinator. No formal introduction, as he started to set up his morning drive as a continuation of a previous radio show. As Chip slowly unveiled his talk show for the first time in the morning drive at KOGO he spiked the program into high gear.
Actually, Chip had some help from mother nature: a 4.0 earthquake rocked the county and the eight day of a continuing bake off started the morning drive. The Shake ‘n Bake contributed to the show, and that helped producer Don Ayres. Don was brought in from the East Coast, and Chip told SDRadio, “We work well together, and have a good time,” Chip told SDRadio late Tuesday night.
Don was part of the Baltimore radio program at WBAL, and Chip wanted him as part of the move to San Diego. As the producer, Don does most of the things behind the scenes except run the mixer board. That’s Chip’s domain, he said. He is one of the few talk show hosts that keeps his hands on the board. (pictured: Chip with Ann Coulter)
Other topics on today’s show included was the unnecessary waste of time of receipt checking at the door when exiting the store. Chip also brought up the point that is emphasized on his web page at KOGO how honesty is the best policy.
Chip said that he’ll be adding more color into the show, and one example is “Blind Movie Reviews”, that will be featured on Thursday. He explains that it is reviews of “movies I haven’t seen”. Plus, he adds, he’ll take the microphone to the audience and ask hard pressing questions. For example, in Tuesday’s edition, he asked a San Diego crowd when the next presidential election is, and no one new.
His impression of San Diego: “One of the few places in America that lives up to the hype.” He is currently living in Carmel Valley and commented that coming up to Del Mar Heights and topping the hill — and seeing the Pacific — is beyond description.
In the interview, Chip indicated that he is independent in the political area — and he doesn’t want to join a part (unless it is on the beach).
He’s getting around the county, learning all the in spots and the proper terms for the area.
During the four hours show, Chip has news anchor LaDona Harvey and the news team with updates four times an hour. The show also has Cal Walker’s airborne traffic reports six times per hour; and sports with Lee Hacksaw Hamilton and Craig Elsten. Sprinkle in a full business news report from Jeff Bellinger at the Wall Street Journal, and adds a look at the flicks with KOGO’s Kevin at the Movies on Friday.
Cliff Albert, Program Director at KOGO, shares a Cliff Note he is passing on to emailers about the new program:
“I know change can sometimes be difficult. I know how hard it is when my wife decides to buy a different kind of toilet paper.
But I have lots of confidence our new morning show on AM 600 KOGO is going to be a successful blend of the new and the familiar…all combining to bring our listeners the best in morning news and talk.
I want you to know…that Chip Franklin is one of the top radio talk show hosts in the country and he is very familiar with San Diego and Southern California. And he was hard to get. His former station, WBAL in Baltimore, where has been for eight years, did not want to let him go due to his ratings. And of course ratings are important. Duh. But
ratings are a reflection of how well a show is accepted by the audience and how well it connects with the local audience.
Chip is joined by veteran morning news anchor LaDona Harvey and the KOGO News team…along with Business Editor George Chamberlin and the Radio News Editors of the Wall Street Journal. Plus you’ll hear sports updates with former Padres broadcaster Craig Elsten along with appearances by Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton. And we continue to bring you
exclusive airborne Traffic reports with veteran broadcaster Cal Walker in “Sky 600″.
Chip Franklin is the first talk show host in the country to win the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Writing from the Radio-Television News Directors Association. That is a big deal. He is a news junkie and in fact would be a better anchorman than Katie Couric. Chip also is a former stand-up comedian and performer. I think you’ll find Chip to be entertaining and informative and someone you will enjoy spending your morning with. Plus we will continue to bring you comprehensive news and traffic updates and the information you need to start your day that you have come to depend on as a loyal KOGO listener.
We are excited about Chip Franklin Mornings. We know how important our listeners are to our success and that’s why we spent a considerable amount of time asking San Diego area listeners what they most wanted in a morning radio show.
I hope you spend some time getting to know Chip and listening to the news and information from the people you have enjoyed on KOGO. I think you will like our new show. And I do appreciate any feedback from you and our other listeners. Really!
Cliff Albert
Program Director
