Are you a hard core Charger fan and want to see the team and enjoy the local radio broadcast? The apparent out of sync is not your fault, nor is it Rock 105.3’s broadcast.
Blame it on new technology, especially if you have HDTV at home. Depending on how you get the HDTV signal could make the sync problem worse.
Scenario 1: HDTV with an outside antenna: The signal from the stadium is encoded, then sent up to the satellite to the broadcast center — and resent up to the satellite and then rebroadcast by the local station. That is at three hops on the TV side. Radio wise, it’s broadcast booth to the station. If watching this way, the radio and TV will be close in sync.
Scenario 2: HDTV via satellite. The signal takes the same path as the first step — but has an added hop from the local station to the satellite to your home. Each step — an over 50,000 mile hop — adds latency to the broadcast. The radio and TV will be further out of sync.
Scenario 3: HDTV via the local cable company. The signal takes the same path as the first step, and then enters the home to the set up box. This adds micro-seconds to the delay and further widening the sync between radio and TV.
In my case, on Sunday’s broadcast, I had scenario 1. Jim Richards of Clear Channel in San Diego ensures me that HDRadio broadcast on Rock 105.3 is turned off so there is no delay for the fan wanting to hear the action at the stadium or at home. The wild card factor, at least for me, is the HDTV transmission that adding delay.
In other words, currently, if you want the audio to sync up, best to watch it on the old fashioned analog TV with the radio. It’ll be close to real time — at least until the analog TV broadcast is turned off in 2009.

Last week, the good folks from the Helen Woodward Animal Center stopped by to tempt a listener with a welcome addition. Prancer yelped it up and was a nice paws in the morning routine.

Double XX Xtra Sports: Yesterdays warm up to football had both XX Sports and Xtra Sports 1360 carrying the same program. At 10 a.m., Fox Sports’ NFL preview radio show could be heard on 1090 AM, 105.7 FM and on 1360 AM. This arrangement ends in early December when 1360 AM becomes the only station in the market to carry Fox Sports.
Today, XX Sports 1090 is hinting at a major announcement.
Almost Live Sports: Rock 105.3’s coverage of the San Diego Chargers is on target and delivers as good as Philip Rivers’ arm. However if you are at the stadium and wanting to listen to the game live … you’ll have to wait several seconds. The main reason is HDRadio. In order for the signal to be in sync between the analog and digital broadcast a delay is introduced. So much for snap and pass ….
Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels today! See YOU on the radio today and here later in the broadcast week. More news, of course, as it happens.

Grant Barrett writes about the return of popular program to KPBS this weekend. “A Way with Words starts its new season this weekend with a brand-new one-hour show.
The program airs in San Diego on KPBS FM 89.5 Saturdays from noon to 1 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. You can find more stations and listen to podcasts here:
Since the show became independent in August, my co-host Martha Barnette and I have, with our producer Stefanie Levine, created a production company that has established a roadmap for new shows through the end of the 2007-08 season, fixed a five-year plan for more seasons and more shows, and given the program a highly visible first-generation web presence that will be our place to talk online with our fans.
During the transition period, we’ve kept 17 of 18 stations, all of our thousands of podcast listeners, and we’ve begun an email newsletter.
You can see the new web site and discussion forum here:
A Way with Words is a lively hour-long public radio show about the English language. Co-hosts Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett take calls from listeners about linguistic disputes, grammatical pet peeves, the origins of words and phrases, and curious regional expressions.

Jennifer writes: “Yep, I’ve moved.
After spending an amazing two years with Chris and Ruggy, the time came to make a change. With their blessings and support, I have accepted a job at a radio station that I have fallen in love with: Sophie.
While I will miss Chris and Rugs tremendously, I am crazy-excited about this opportunity to be a part of a station that cares so much about the same music I do. Check me out at my new home starting in December: 103.7 FM and www.radiosophie.com.
Love you, and thanks for your support of Cantore in the Morning. ..
CBS Radio’s Modern AC SOPHIE @ 103.7 (KSCF-FM) is pleased to announce that Jennifer White has joined the station as morning air personality.
Wednesday was White’s final appearance as morning co-host of the Chris Cantore show at alternative 91X (XTRA-FM) San Diego, CA. She came to 91X in January 2006 from KNDD Seattle. Jennifer’s background includes air staff positions at KPNT St. Louis, WNOR and WAFX in Norfolk.
As a voice-over talent she’s been heard on commercials for car dealers and other companies. White is a graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College.
KSCF Operations Manager/Program Director, Charlie Quinn comments, “Jennifer is the ideal combination of San Diego morning show credibility fused with a natural, intuitive feel for the SOPHIE life-group. She understands the expectation of our listeners and will offer an organic, no hype, no bells and whistles presentation that focuses on SOPHIE music and artists.”
There are no immediate plans to add additional personalities to the SOPHIE morning show. White is expected to join the KSCF air staff in mid-December.

John Ziegler, the night time voice at KFI who had Southern California calling in from San Diego to Santa Barbara, is leaving the talk station. (Pictured: John with news host Leah Brandon.)
John sent out to his email group:
This mailing is to alert you that tomorrow night’s program [Tuesday, November 13th] will be my final show on KFI.
My four years on the air at KFI have been filled with many extraordinary and memorable moments, but for many reasons it is clearly time for that period in my life to come to an end. While I am have extremely mixed thoughts and emotions about this reality, I am positive that it is the best result for my physical and mental health. I am also hopeful that it is the best for my career as well.
About the only thing I will miss about the show [other than the pay check] is getting the chance to share my views on the news with you and the many other listeners who have appreciated the program. I thank you for giving me that privilege to be a small part of your life.
One of the many reasons that I am leaving KFI at this time (the decision is truly mutual) is that I have been hired to produce a documentary film on a topic that I am sure you will be interested in. It is due out next year and I will be providing you updates regarding that project as well as anything else that may come up via this mailing list.
While I appreciate the sentiment, please do not bother contacting KFI to complain about this development. It will not change anything and only be a waste of your time.
I will be in contact when I have something of importance to share and I hope you do the same. Feel free to check out JohnZiegler.com for updates.
All the best,
John Ziegler

Z90 added Big Boy’s Neighborhood to their morning line up. Previous San Diego based Chino heads back to Phoenix and Tati is on maternity leave.
Big Boy’s image became well known throughout the Los Angeles Area in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when Power 106 placed his nearly-nude 500-plus pound image onto billboards throughout the area. His name comes from large size. He has reduced well over 250 pounds through surgery combined with diet and exercise.
Big Boy has been named Personality of the Year four times by the Radio Music Awards and three times by Radio and Records magazine. The National Association of Broadcasters awarded him the Marconi Award in 2002 and 2004.

Lee Hacksaw Hamilton hit the mic at 3:07 p.m. and kicked off live and local programming for Xtra Sports 1360. “It is a pleasure to be part of the new broadcast team. We invented it in San Diego!” Lee said during the initial broadcast. The first hour was dedicated to the fans with the line up coming in after 4 p.m. to co-chair with Lee.
The line up starting tomorrow:
6am - 10am Dave & Jeff
10am - 12pm The Sports Page
12pm - 3pm World According to Chris
3pm - 7pm Sportswatch with Lee Hacksaw Hamilton
7pm - 11pm JT the Brick.
For those who remember, JT the Brick had a show briefly on KFMB-AM before heading out to Las Vegas. He is presently the evening host for Fox Sports Network.
Stacy Taylor has been offered a position at KOGO:
“The former host of a wide-ranging morning show on the former KLSD-AM 1360 and former evening talk show host on AM 600 KOGO, Stacy Taylor is taking some time off right now but is expected to return. He is available for fill-in work and office parties. But hurry, because Clear Channel has offered him a new show on KOGO and we expect an announcement soon.”
Cliff Albert writes about 1360 KLSD. Visit the web site at
SanDiegoProgressiveTalk.blogspot.com.
“This is going to be a place where former KLSD listeners can come to share their thoughts, their desires and their hopes for progressive talk in San Diego. Effective Monday Nov. 12th at 3 p.m., KLSD-AM switched to XTRA Sports 1360 AM. This was a business decision based on the fact that while we were able to survive for four years since the launch of Progressive Talk AM 1360 KLSD, we have been unable to make it a financial success so that we could continue the format. Sports talk radio attracts more traditional radio advertisers than progressive talk.
We do thank you for your support over the last four years so that we could keep San Diego’s progressive talk voice alive during that time on KLSD. You have been a part of clearly the most loyal audience of any radio station in our community.”While the format has had some challenges being financially successful, the progressive voice will not go away in our community. It will exist in other forms, from the individual voices of our listeners and believers in the progressive cause, to some of our talk show hosts who will continue to be heard in San Diego on traditional radio, around the world on satellite radio, Internet radio and high-tech wireless.
And remember, your support of KLSD and the efforts of our talk show hosts and all those responsible for our format over the last four years, have not been in vain. Anything but. You can take heart in the fact that we all have been able during these last four years to bring to life the progressive voice in San Diego that had been far too dormant in the years before. You and our talk hosts have made a difference in San Diego. And we thank you.

San Diego I want to talk to you!. Xtra Sports 1360 hits the airwaves at 3 p.m. today with the legendary Lee Hacksaw Hamilton returning the San Diego airwaves.
His show will kick off Xtra Sports 1360 in what has been the longest known station change in recent memory. As the rumbles started in August with the registration of the domain, the first day of broadcast was put off for various reasons. The format officially changes today.
Expect the entire Xtra Sports lineup with Lee today as he will re-introduce the legendary Xtra Sports moniker to the market. Starting Tuesday morning the entire lineup will be on hand starting at 6 a.m. The web site is XtraSports1360.com. The station is running Fox Sports syndicated programming.
On Wednesday, Sophie@103.7 will present Rock the Benefit Concert featuring Eskimo Joe at the Hard Rock Café La Jolla. All ticket proceeds will benefit the victims of the San Diego Wildfires. Hard Rock Café La Jolla is located at 909 Prospect Street, La Jolla, CA 92037. Doors open at 7pm. The suggested donation is $5 and tickets will be available the night of the show. This event is 21 and older. Sophie@103.7 along with San Diego/Imperial Counties American Red Cross will also have tickets available at various locations.
Eskimo Joe is an Australian rock band whose debut album Girl went gold in 2001. Their second album A Song Is a City was released in Australia 2004 and went double platinum. The band released their third album Black Fingernails, Red Wine in 2006 and the album has gone quadruple platinum. The first
single release, sharing the title with the album, “Black Fingernails, Red Wine” has become their first top 10 single. Eskimo Joe was also voted 2007 MTV Australian Video Music Awards, Best Group and Best Rock Video - “Black Fingernails, Red Wine”.
Mark Gleason sends in a picture from the Jack Vincent party that was held last week. Pictured is Matt Gleason, Jack Vincent, Mark, and Shotgun Tom Kelly.
After the fires were under control, I was invited by KOGO’s Cliff Albert to talk with some of the news staff about the fire coverage. See the story on Wednesday at SDRadio.
It was a sold out show and US 95.7’s Tony and Kris gave away four pairs of tickets to the best “Mannah Montanas”. This happened during last Friday’s live “Mannah Montana” broadcast from the San Diego Sports Arena.
Contestants for the contest were judged on their Hannah Montana look and impression. One dad even wrote his own song! There were Marines, construction workers, and teachers all dressed up as Hannah Montana. People came from as far as Arizona and Los Angeles to compete.
There are several ways to send Christmas and holiday cards to servicemembers. Please visit The Post Office List of Requirements. A previous story that listed an address — would have the cards recycled. The complete scoop at Snopes.com.

The longest format change in recent memory finally happens on Monday. Lee Hacksaw Hamilton opens the mic at 3 p.m. and Xtra Sports comes back to the airwaves.
1360 KLSD’s current programming as a progressive talker will end its run.
As a sports station, Xtra Sports will have Dave Palet and Jeff Dotseth in the morning drive from 6 to 10 a.m. The morning show hosts are in familiar territory as they were sports hosts at 760KFMB. (Dave Palet, Hall of Fame Dave Winfield, and Jeff Dotseth)
Former hosts at XX Sports Radio take to the airwaves. Josh Rosenburg picks up after Dave and Jeff leave the air. The two-hour block is expected to be The Sports Page as writers from the San Diego Union Tribune will join Josh.
Chris Ello (pictured above) has the three hour block starting at noon. Chris was named a host at XX Sports Radio, and before the ink dried on the press release — an announcement was made of his move to Clear Channel. (Pictured: Josh Rosenburg)
At night, Fox Sports Radio will fill in the remainder of the broadcast day.
Posted on the 1360 KLSD web site: “We are continuing to work on options to keep the Progressive talk voice alive in some way in San Diego.” There was some discussion about putting the current line-up on an FM HD channel; possibly Channel 933’s HD3 signal. As of this morning the HD3 portion of the spectrum has not been turned on. Most of the current syndication programming from Air America and Ed Schultz is available through satellite radio or available from other market streaming radio.
New: From Cliff Albert: “We thank you for your support over the last four years so that we could keep San Diego’s progressive talk voice alive during that time on KLSD. You have been a part of clearly the most loyal audience of any radio station in our community.
“While the format has had some challenges being financially successful, the progressive voice will not go away in our community. The World-Famous GelderHead Thought Of The Day: Let no one ever come to you without leaving better. ~ Mother Teresa
Neil Ross, San Diego radio legend, has the honors of doing the voice over in tomorrow night’s Nova. You can hear him on KPBS-TV and KPBS-HD. Neil writes: “Think you know everything about the beginnings of the space race? I did too. We don’t………………..My privilege to narrate another quality PBS program!”
The program is Sputnik Declassified and starts at 8 p.m.
On October 4, 1957, the Space Age dawned with the red hue of the Communist flag when the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite. Sputnik I stunned the world and spurred a surge in science education and innovation that changed our world forever. But was Sputnik I really a shock to America’s leaders, and how close was the U.S. to getting into space first?
In “Sputnik Declassified,” NOVA probes the prehistory of the Space Age, examining what makes Earth orbit so difficult to achieve; why the superpower rivalry in the wake of World War II made spaceflight attainable for the first time in history; and counters the popular view that President Dwight Eisenhower and the American science and defense establishments were caught completely off guard.
“Sputnik Declassified” draws on previously classified documents to tell the real story behind the opening chapter in the space race.
Roger Hedgecock kicked off the first phase of his nationwide show on Saturday. He hit the mic at 9:07 and formally launched his weekend talk show. The plans have Roger to do the weekend show and then step into a formal weekday show sometime next year. TheRogerHedgecockShow.com is the web home for the broadcast venture. Roger was heard previously as one of the top fill-in hosts for Rush Limbaugh. Jimmy Valentine remains as the executive producer for the weekday local and weekend national show.
Sometime this week, the end of AM radio for Air America and Ed Schultz is really, really, really expected. What is not sure is the date; what is sure is that Stacy Taylor will remain on the regular airwaves in San Diego. As far as the programming from progressive 1360, much talk about HDRadio. Stay Tuned.
San Diego 1700AM’s Mark Larson again guest-hosts the Michael Reagan Show tomorrow (Tuesday). The nationally syndicated program airs on 200 stations across the USA and on Sirius and XM. Hear it locally on SD1700 from 6 to 9PM. (Mark pictured with Rudy Giuliani.)
Also: Mark will again part of the Young America’s Foundation/Reagan Ranch ” West Coast Leadership Conference” in Santa Barbara this weekend. He’ll emcee the Friday night Presidents Club dinner and speak at the conference, attended by over 500 college students from across America.

It didn’t take too long for XX Sports Radio to move Dan Patrick to nights. The former ESPN Radio host ventured out on his own — and can be heard in the early evening hours at 1090 and 105.7 FM. Those who who want to hear Dan’s take live, can tune in KLAC-AM 570. It’s not that Dan’s show being dropped to night is a bad idea; it is just that his show is very timely in most cases, and hearing about potential events from 12-hours ago when they break in the day — is confusing when the playbook is unfolded during the broadcast day. A good thing about the reshuffle on the 1090 lineup — the daytime programming is better at the expense of time shifting Dan’s show.
