The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: An optimist may see a light where there is none, but why must the pessimist always run to blow it out? ~Michael de Saint-Pierre
Last Friday, massive cuts at Clear Channel’s Los Angeles base saw at least ten on-air folks leave the broadcasting company. Familiar voices including Mike Nolan from traffic to on-air host Sean Andre at Hot 92.3.
The chain is transitioning from a public company to a private corporation and this is thought to be part of the plan according to financial experts. What is lacking is the timing by the Texas officials as the holiday season is only three weeks away.
In LA, Mike Nolan was the air reporter for KFI, KISS, and other stations. Hot 92.1 is a R&B station in the number two market.
As the cuts started on the east coast, it is thought that the ax will be sharpened here sometime this week.
Stay Tuned.
Longtime 101.5 KGB listeners expect that the yearly Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw Best Of CD is a four-star production. It is, after all, the best bits from the year all rolled up into one big CD of fun.
Listeners also realize that the money spent — this year at $12.99 — is more than a look back at the year, it is money for the annual 12 Days of Christmas. It is the annual event that has the morning show giving back to the community. As in the past, the recipients may not be listeners to the show — it is the Christmas spirit that Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw give out.
Best bits: the first track lets you know that the CD is non-stop fun and starts with You like Pie?. Then it kicks it up with the Dean of American Sportscaster’s exclusive of Bud Schlitz.
Other gems include Ruth’s Voice in the Head, Arnold and Would You Rather?. Sprinkle in Shecky O’Herlihy and Bromo, James Bromo and the return of Dave Mason.
The CD delivers on the promise that all 27-tracks are a great look back at one of the longest lasting morning show teams in the market. There is a reason that the DSC remains at the top and if by chance you don’t know, just buy the CD — knowing the money is poured back into our county and knowing that this glimpse into the show — is worth of your collection. Shatter the four stars, this year’s best bits deserves a solid gold five. Where to buy and on-line ordering information can be found at 101.5 KGB’s web site.
Well done, Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn, Cookie Chainsaw Randolph and the morning crew. Well done.
The new sports station is entering its second month, and the sports day at Xtra Sports 1360 kicks off with Dave Palet and Jeff Dothseth. They have been teamed up at four stations: 760 KFMB, XESPN-AM 800, Free FM, and 1360 KLSD. They are not afraid to go the distance in their comments — and even poke fun at themselves.
As the web site for the station proclaims, “Not only do they have experience in the business, but gotten it all in San Diego. These two guys are friends as well as colleagues, so they enjoy working together and interacting with listeners. Added into the mix is their own irreverent “third wheel,” Mike Costa.”
US 95.7’s Tony and Kris received a phone call from country artist Garth Brooks last week. The country star is performing five concerts in the LA area with all proceeds benefiting the five victims from San Diego to Malibu. Hear the San Diego exclusive at US 95.7’s web site. The concert sold out in minutes.
The Dave Koz and Friends Smooth Jazz Christmas Show is coming to Copley Symphony Hall on Friday, December 14th. The show begins at 8pm and will feature Dave Koz, Wayman Tisdale, Jonathan Butler, and former American Idol contestant, Kimberly Locke!
GelderHead Productions, offering professional voice-over services to enhance business communications, announced that it is spearheading the continued production of “Holiday Magic 2007…a gift for children of all ages,” a CD featuring music and a holiday tale that will be distributed to sick children at Children’s Hospital San Diego and their siblings. A number of singers and actors donated their talent for the CD, and funds are currently being solicited to cover the cost of production and ensure as many children as possible receive them.
Jeff Gelder, owner of GelderHead Productions, distributed 1500 CD’s to four hospitals in 2006 including Albuquerque, NM, Milwaukee, WI, Orange County, CA and San Diego, CA; he hopes to exceed that number this year. Donations are requested by December 20th and accepted through out the year. Checks of any denomination should be made out to GelderHead Productions (with Children’s Hospital CD Fund on the memo line) and sent to P.O. Box 3386, San Diego, CA 92163-3386, or donate via Paypal at www.HolidayMagicCD.com and click on “Make a Donation.”
The tale on the CD is weaved by Jeffrey the Reindeer and Santa Claus as they make their way from the North Pole to visit the children of San Diego. Along the way they meet Jeffrey’s cousin, Carlito, who lives at the Wild Animal Park. Last year we introduced Kate the feisty teenage reindeer from Milwaukee and in 2007 will go to New Orleans to meet Kate’s cousin Peeshwank the Porcupine. The talent this year is remarkable, and includes award winning author and actress Vanna Bonta (Beastmaster, Hocus Pocus, An American Tale: Fievel Goes West, Beauty and the Beast, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie), and Sam Bass of KyXy 96.5fm San Diego.
Other performers who generously lent their talent to the CD are extraordinary vocalist and recording artist Danielle LoPresti, Janet Hammer’s Full Measure Carolers, Vocals Only, Dave Franco, singer, song writer Karl Anthony, and recording artists John Korbel, Johnny Douglas Jr., Ric Henry & Eileen Bowman, James Higgins, Ashley Fox Linton, Tricia & Austyn Meyers, Doug Turkel, Steve Hodson & Joanne Roshon, Jay Crawford, Helena Marie Woods, Erik Sheppard, Jay Crawford, Sasha La Russo, and Jeff Underwood.
Microsoft manager and writer Mark Patterson penned the script, and Santa Claus, Carlito, Kate, Peeshwank the Porcupine and Jeffrey the Reindeer are played by professional speaker Phillip Tanzilo, voice actors Greg Dehm, Heather Martinez, Connie Stewart and Gelder also of KyXy 96.5fm, respectively.
The first CD was produced five years ago, when Gelder was tasked in a Landmark Education class to come up with a project that would enhance the community and ultimately take on a life of its own. That’s just what has happened, as Gelder now fields many inquiries about the CD all year long. “This year we hope to once again have CD’s for Children’s Hospital’s in Milwaukee, Albuquerque and Orange County in addition to San Diego, and new this year are New Orleans and Miami. We’ve had requests from other hospitals around the country.
For every $2.00 donation a child will receive a CD of their own,” says Gelder. “This is a labor of love that is received with much joy by children who are unfortunately spending the holiday season in the hospital and their siblings, who often crave attention due to so much being given to the ailing member of their family,” Gelder said. “We appreciate all donations! The more donations the more children that will be receiving a CD.”
