Daily Newspaper makes news hourly

The Fourth and Fifth Estates blur

sosd_r_billboard.jpgThere is a new voice in town the offers timely, concise, and entertaining information about our county. It is Sign on Radio that broadcasts from the Union-Tribune headquarters in Mission Valley.

What a class act it is. Dave Mason runs a tight ship that competes for the office ear and those who are wanting quality talk radio but not the political gab that commercial radio offers. In is a real radio station minus the traditional antenna. The programming focus is on the newspaper, however it’s more timely and offers interaction. As fast as the paper is produced, it is about six-hours old when the ink hits your fingers. Adding an on-line streak makes the information immediate.

The station has everything: ISDN quality phone lines, a production studio, good microphones, and a quality studio that is “shhh” quiet. Add the talents, and it could be a stand-alone broadcast station. The station could be the standard others will look to.

sosd_r_mason.jpgFormer Kool 99.3 and KOGO host, Dave Mason hits the ‘net weekdays at 7 a.m. for a broadcast that is similar to the old AM 600 news wheel. It is more than reading the newspaper, it is breaking news and updates too. Add traffic and weather and it’s a full circle of info before hitting the road battles.

Charlie and Harrigan take to airwaves at 9 a.m. They “broadcast” from a secret location in North County, most likely sipping some of Jack’s fine wine (rumor). the radio pros, last heard on 760 KFMB entertain and spin stories for two hours.

At 11 a.m. is the two hour block that features Ken Copper and Clark Anthony. Ken, best known for his days at KCBQ, KOGO and KBEST. Clark is a well-known San Diego voice from his days at KFMB, and is also known for his on-air work at KNSD-TV 39.

If there is a cause needed for local programming, sample this show. The majority of guests will be from the paper, but it is more than an advertising tool to buy the paper — the show compliments the story. Best bests include Karla Peterson, Steve Breen, Logan Jenkins and others.

In all, Sign on Radio is what over-the-air radio is missing — and with the advent of high speed wireless broadband coming to a car near you, and available world-wide, SOSD Radio has the potential of becoming the standard used by other mediums wanting to get in on the next wave: local coverage that radio lacks.

Sign on Radio resumes live on-line streaming in 2008.
