This week marks an important milestone for all of us here at KSON. Thursday and Friday (January 31 & February 1), KSON will hold our 20th — that’s right, we said 20th — Radiothon for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital! Over the last 20 years, KSON Loyal Listeners like you have helped raise nearly 10 Million Dollars for St. Jude and their quest to eradicate cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.
To celebrate this 20th Anniversary Radiothon, we’re proud to announce the best line up ever for our “Partner-in-Hope” Concert.
Everyone who becomes a Partner-in-Hope during this year’s radiothon will receive two tickets to the concert featuring the founder of Country Cares, multi-platinum recording artist and front man for the group Alabama, Randy Owen! Joining Randy will be pop star and newcomer to Country Music, Jewel, along with special guest Jimmy Wayne.
The only way to get tickets to this show is by becoming a Partner-in-Hope during the Radiothon. The show takes place at 4th and B downtown March 13 and is limited to those 21 and older.
As you may know, Randy Owen started the Country Cares program nearly 20 years ago after spending time with St. Jude founder, entertainer Danny Thomas. Randy got other country artists and radio stations across America to join together in the cause of the St. Jude organization. Due to the efforts of Randy Owen and stations like KSON (and, of course, our Loyal Listeners), the Country Cares program has raised $315 Million Dollars for the hospital. The research and work done at St. Jude benefits hospitals across the country and around the world, including San Diego’s own Rady Children’s Hospital.

KPBS announces the debut of Citizen Voices, a new blog featuring six “everyday” San Diegans from various cultural backgrounds and parts of the county who will share their individual perspectives on election matters.
The new Citizen Voices will be introduced on KPBS Radio’s These Days on Monday, February 4. The guest commentators were selected from nearly 100 applicants who ranged from university professors to college students, surfers to soccer moms and more (see bios following). While none is a professional journalist or broadcaster, each will use their writing skill to contribute thought-provoking observations and opinions. Their diverse viewpoints come from being of different faiths and ethnicities, professions, sexual orientations and political parties.
The Citizen Voices bloggers will each provide commentary on a weekly basis and also share their observations regularly on KPBS Radio’s These Days and KPBS TV’s Envision San Diego.
The project is not only about giving voice to six individuals, it’s about widening the platform to expand the public debate. To enhance the Citizen Voices project, kpbs.org visitors are encouraged to participate by providing responses to commentaries and have their viewpoints shared as well. Trina Boice
Trina Boice was honored as the California Young Mother of the Year in 2004. She’s the author of six books, speaks Spanish, and has a real estate license, travel agent license, two master’s degrees, and a black belt in tae kwon do.
She worked as a legislative assistant for a congressman in Washington D.C., and was given the “Points of Light” Award and Presidential Volunteer Service Award for her domestic and international service. She wrote a column called “The Boice Box” for a newspaper in Georgia, where she lived for 15 years. She writes for Roots Television and Go2.com, and helps her husband operate their real estate appraisal company.
Steven Garrett
Steven Garrett is a 29-year-old self proclaimed “foodie” and “geek.” He is a professional food blogger whose blog, renegadekosher.com, has won several blogging awards, including Blogathon’s Best Blog in 2006. He’s been spotlighted on Bloghop.com, and he won “Best Recipe December 2006″ from Chefclub.net.
He is a practicing Jew in the Conservative Judaism movement. He is a registered Libertarian, politically speaking, and prides himself on always looking at life with a humorous slant, which may have come from the years he spent as a struggling professional stand-up comic.
Chuck Hartley
Charles Hartley has been living and practicing law in San Diego County since 2001. In a previous career, he worked as a special agent with the Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, completing assignments in Washington, DC; La Paz, Bolivia; and Lome, Togo.
Though he is currently registered to vote as a Republican, his politics trend toward Libertarian. He believes in civil liberties and individual responsibility, restoration of habeas corpus for everyone, and has a long-held interest in coastal access issues that tries to balance his love of going to the beach with an aspiration to someday own a home on the beach.
Chris McConnell
Chris McConnell was born into an Air Force family in Idaho, but left the state when he was still a toddler. His family relocated more than 20 times to Air Force bases across the country.
Growing up, Chris dreamed of being a Supreme Court justice. There are no outward signs of progress toward this dream, he now says. He has been a student, a bookseller, a teacher, a waiter, a valet, unemployed, a plumber’s assistant and a freelance writer in San Diego.
Chris has been surfing around San Diego since he went to UCSD in the 1990s. Chris says thanks to his late “Grammy’s” wise and soulful decision to move to La Jolla in the 1960s, San Diego is one of the few places Chris has called home.
Alma Sove
Alma Sove has spent most of her life in San Diego and knows the aches and pains of living in a once-sleepy beach town during its inevitable expansion. She has lived everywhere from Encanto to Lakeside, from Clairemont and Mission Beach to Hillcrest and City Heights, ever since her family moved from Northern California during Jerry Brown’s early tenure as governor.
Alma grew up in a household of painters, poets, and activists, attributing a sense of social justice to her Mexican-American family roots. Alma is currently attending Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Prior to law school she held a variety of jobs in retail, then transitioned into the travel industry as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines. After earning her paralegal certificate from the University of San Diego, she worked for a short time as a legal assistant.
Candace Suerstedt
Candace Suerstedt has been a professional filmmaker for nearly 30 years. A member of the Directors Guild of America, she has been a production manager and assistant director on over 120 motion pictures and TV projects. Clients have included CBS, The Walt Disney Company, Discovery, PBS, NBC, Columbia, Paramount, Sony, and Universal Studios.
As the daughter of a Navy fighter pilot, Candace’s nomadic childhood gave her the opportunity to attend 19 different schools by the time she graduated from high school. As it did for many Navy juniors, Coronado became her surrogate hometown, where she now resides.
A political activist since her days at the University of California, Berkeley, she remains passionately involved in environmental and cultural reform. Her greatest political accomplishment is to have raised three formidable daughters who relentlessly question the world around them.

Lincoln Financial is expected to announce the sale of KiFM, KSON-AM, KSON-FM and 94/9 this week. Industry insiders suggest the sale may be to a local group.
Mark Larson fills in for Michael Reagan today. He’ll be heard on San Diego AM 1700 at 7 p.m.
Clear Channel has a hiring freeze effective last Friday. As the company transitions from public to private, John Hogan said no more hires at all. First quarter projections are done, one of the reasons cited in the monetary cuts.

Tony and Kris of US 95.7 encourage their listeners to go “Broke for Brooks.” Continuing with their commitment to raise as much money as possible for San Diego fire relief, Tony and Kris put their last pair of Garth Brooks tickets up for auction. Garth Brooks is playing five SOLD OUT concerts at the Los Angeles Staples center tonight and tomorrow night. Tony and Kris’ “Broke for Brooks” raised $5,000 in two hours of on air bidding.
“We knew we couldn’t raise as much money as Garth has but we just wanted to do
what we could and I don’t think $5000 is too bad,” Kris Rochester , co-host of of the morning show said.

What’s the buzz about KPRZ Terry Frost? He is a commercial helicopter pilot and a certified flight instructor, in addition to his 5 to 10 a.m. show. The station, at 1210 AM, is the strongest Christian talk station in the market.
He is one of the few that will tell you he is a native San Diegan. Terry grew up in San Carlos, attended San Diego City College and began his radio career at their Jazz station KSDS 88.3 FM. In 1979 Terry went on air for KBEST-95 where he worked as an on-air host for seven years.
Terry had a successful run and was featured in the January 1984 edition of “Tuned-In Magazine” as KBESTS “Best Kept Secret”.
In April of 1988 he became the producer of the Horizon Radio Ministry daily messages from Pastor/Teacher Mike Macintosh. Terry’s involvement in Horizon International Ministries Festival of Life outreaches has given him the opportunity to work with many pastors and their churches to spread the Gospel message throughout the world.

Jack Heine has joined US 95.7’s Tony and Kris as the executive producer. He was previously a producer at LA’s Star 98.7 FM morning show.
Tony Randall and Kris Rochester continue to be a top rated San Diego morning team since their arrival to the market in1993. Both hosts are excited to add Heine to their roster, which also includes Linda Welby and Kristi Lyons.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join Tony and Kris. They are one of those rare teams that get along just as well off the air as they do on. No tension, no drama, just two guys who want to make great radio,” Jack said
Kris adds: “This is it, we’ve wanted a producer that not only has experience, but the motivation to get things done. “
San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson will debut a daily half hour radio show in Iraq, beginning February 25. It will be part of a new network called “A Voice in the Wilderness” operated by military chaplains inside U.S/Coalition bases, for personnel on location.
The daily program will include key newsmaker interviews from Mark’s 1700AM show and commentary specifically prepared for the network program. He’s also the only San Diego talk show host who’s broadcast from as many unique vantage points in the war theater covering Iraq, the Horn of Africa and most recently doing direct broadcasts from the Persian Gulf and inside Afghanistan. (Ted Leitner of XX Sports and Tony and Kris of US 95.7 did a week of shows from Iraq. Mark’s broadcast were also in Iraq, and at sea and in the Afgan theater.)
Military network officials have invited him to Iraq for on-location broadcasts later this year. He also has an invitation to return to Afghanistan. More details coming soon. His daily talkshow airs on San Diego 1700AM from 5 to 9AM.

Roger Hedgecock will announce on Tuesday that he’ll add an hour to his show starting on Wednesday. The show on KOGO will run from 3 to 7 p.m. He marks the 22nd year in broadcasting in San Diego tomorrow at Tressel’s in the Town and Country Resort. The event will start at 3 p.m. and will have plenty of food and prizes.

XX Sports Radio will host a Championship Sunday Viewing Party to root on San Diego as they travel to take on undefeated New England at Dave and Buster’s this Sunday, January 20 at 10am.
All fans are invited to Dave and Buster’s in Mission Valley to show their support for the home team.
The XX NFL Sunday Show will be broadcasting live beginning at 10am and during the viewing party. “Coach” John Kentera and Joe Tutino will broadcast a live post-game show from Dave and Buster’s.
Fans are encouraged to show up early to watch all the pre-game festivities.
“We’re excited about teaming up with Dave and Buster’s once again. Last week was a great success and it’s a great place for football fans of all ages. It’s going to be a great day,” said Tutino.
XX Sports Radio will be giving away prizes throughout the day. Doors open at 10am.
Stacy Taylor has a time change on Monday. The afternoon host at San Diego 1700 will start at 3 p.m.
Program Director Mark Larson says, “The response to Stacy’s new show has been outstanding, so we didn’t want to give afternoon talk show competitors a head start at 3 p.m.” Previously, Stacy started at 4 p.m. Mark adds: “We’ve also found that more listeners prefer “Marketwrap with Moe Ansari” at 6 p.m., so the program will shift to that hour on Monday.”
Starting at 7 will be Michael Reagan. San Diego 1700 also features Mark Larson in the morning, from 5 to 9 a.m. “New York Myke” Shelby at noon and Dennis Miller from 1 to 3 p.m. Larson adds, “1700 is the most balanced station in town, with a variety of viewpoints… mostly conservative, but not completely.”

XX Sports Radio Presents: Scott and BR, Live and Wired at the Downtown House of Blues on Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
“The Chargers are on the road to Arizona for the Super Bowl and we are going to be there every step of the way,” said Billy Ray Smith, former Charger and Morning Show Host for XX Sports Radio.
All fans are invited to the House of Blues to show their support for the Bolts as they travel to New England to take on the undefeated Patriots in the AFC Championship.
Scott and BR will be broadcasting live from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. There will be live music, contests, prizes, food and drink specials and surprise guests.
There will be live performances by Skanic and XX Sports Radio’s “Bolts Idol” winner, Marcus Preciado.

KFI-AM 640’s broadcast tower was hit by a small airplane nearly three years ago. Since then, the station has been broadcasting on an auxiliary tower at half power. Still the station remains the most listened to station in the United States, upping New York’s WABC by 100,000 in the CUME area.
The La Mirada City Council has unanimously approved reconstruction of the main broadcast tower. The new construction will be a bit shorter than before as it is nearby a flight path of an airport. The tower, near the Los Angeles / Orange County line and the 5-freeway, is expected to be back on line by June, according to station officials.
The station will then return to 50,000 watts of power from a single tower and be heard throughout Southern California and the western half of the U.S. at night.
The station counts in Clear Channel’s San Diego operations.
JM on the FM: He certainly knows jack about radio — legendary Jim McInnes can be heard in the afternoon drive on KFMB-FM, San Diego’s Jack FM. He’s doing afternoon traffic on the drive home.
JM in the PM can also be heard doing newscast on KFMB-AM 760. With this, JM can be heard on two stations in the market — thanks Jim. Expect some of that JM magic in the afternoon drive.

91X Local Show “Loudspeaker SD,” Names New Hosts, Fresh New Sound and Look.
San Diego alternative rock station 91X announced expanded accessibility, new hosts, and a new name for its long running music program Loudspeaker, renamed “Loudspeaker SD”.
Weekly episodes of Loudspeaker San Diego will be available for download or stream “on demand” from www.91X.com. The move allows listeners the best offerings of San Diego artists at their convenience, with the stream available online 24 hours a day.
Andrew Rowley and Preston Roeschlein have been named the new hosts of Loudspeaker SD. Previously Andrew hosted a radio show at Palomar College with KKSM, and at San Diego State University with KCR. Andrew and Preston have also hosted a program on autumnradio.net. Both are from San Diego and work at 91X.
“Andrew and Preston have proven themselves, are passionate music lovers and will present all styles of alternative music in San Diego”, said 91X Program Director Phil Manning, “both have stepped up with fresh ideas that will be demonstrated over time. I’m excited with what I’m hearing already in our newest incarnation of Loudspeaker SD.”
Loudspeaker SD airs on 91X Sunday nights after Loveline.

Chris Cantore:
Former 91Xer, Chris Cantore had a very successful run as the morning show at the alternative rocker. Finest City Broadcasting let the veteran go after Christmas.
His MySpace page is taking off with comments such as this from Angela: “Thank you for sharing your mornings with us… without you at 91x it’s like i’m listening to a bunch of 12 yr olds fighting over the mic…. you were the best thing they had going… you let your listeners into your life… you talked about your family and you made your listeners feel like family too. YOU LET US IN… that’s something that NOBODY else on San Diego radio has GENUINELY done… you’re so down to earth and stand up for what’s right –regardless of the sacrifice– That is why you are loved so much Chris. Best of wishes to you and yours, and I hope to hear you on the air again soon… You are who you are, and that’s a blessing that nobody can take away.”
Also from Tania: “I’m sorry for 91X they’ve lost the best they had, and I’m sorry for us, the morning show listeners! (I’m a 3rd grade teacher) I just want to say thanx! My mornings will never be the same. I listened to you almost every day for years (7 or 8, since I was in high school!) I used to love 91X because you were there (I only listen to the radio in the mornings when I’m getting ready and on my way to work) I love the music I love because I heard it in your show. I miss you and will miss you until I hear you on the air again! And I know you deserve the time off and I hope you enjoy it, but I also hope to hear you back on the radio really soon.”

San Diego 1700’s program director Mark Larson says the reaction to the addition of Stacy Taylor to their line-up has been very strong. What Mark finds most fascinating is the email he’s receiving from die-hard liberals who now praise the “Larson open mindedness”. He notes, “And they’ll grow to love me, too. The fact is, 1700 has found a niche that really mirrors San Diego…. mostly conservative but not 100-percent”. Mark leads off, live and local, from the right 5 to 9 a.m. and Taylor winds ‘em up outta left field 4 to 7 p.m. Noted that New York Myke and Dennis Miller are a bridge to Stacy’s show int he afteroon.
MORE LARSON: As the prime guest-host for Michael Reagan’s national network talkshow, he filled in again on Monday, broadcast on over 200 stations and Sirius and XM satellite.
In terms of exposure, every week Mark’s voice is also heard on over 2,500 outlets around the world each week, including Turning Point radio and television with the Dr. David Jeremiah ministry and is heard in health supplement ads.

John will returns to the airwaves this morning. He’ll do commentaries that will be heard at 7:20 am and 4:20 pm on AM 540.

Local Notes: The fall book was good to KOGO and 760 KFMB. Call it the fire bounce as the two AM stations were the primary station that San Diego choose to receive their information. It was also very good for Lincoln Financial’s KSON and KiFM. They were at the top of the 12-plus ratings. Both stations captured more than ten-percent of the audience. Clear Channel had nearly a quarter of the audience spread across seven stations. (it is too early to see where XTRA Sports 1360 is in the ratings picture.) Noted: overnight belongs to George Noory on KOGO-AM. Combined with KFI the syndicated show has 30-percent of the audience in certain age groups …..
Expect the radio books to settle down next period — unless a calamity happens …..

Stacy Taylor hits the airwaves at 4 p.m. today. He’ll be part of the afternoon drive at San Diego AM 1700. Stacy tells SDRadio that he’ll pick up where he left off from his previous station of 1360 KLSD. Stacy was the morning drive at the former progressive talker.
His first day back will include a recap on why he moved stations. Of course, he’ll be talking on his view of the political situation. Stacy’s web site at StacyTaylor.com has been revamped.
AM 1700 is based in Baja California, and the U.S. marketing rights are held by the Broadcast Company of the Americas. They also program XX Sports Radio at 1090 AM and 105.7 FM.
The “Daily Voice and Journal of Broadcasting”, Radio Daily News has named “The fired and laid-off employees of Clear Channel, CBS Radio, Citadel, Emmis, Cumulus and other large, medium and small market radio stations who have devoted their immense talents to broadcasting” as the recipients of the annual “Radio Persons of the Year” recognition.
The “2007 Radio Person of the Year” recipient was “No One”.
“2006 Radio Person of the Year” recipient was Steve Jobs of Apple/iPod/iPhone. The 2005 “Radio Person of the Year” recognition was shared by Sirius Radio’s Mel Karmazin and XM Radio’s Hugh Panero.
The recipients of this year’s award are not victims, although many have suffered from poor management and programming decisions in an industry that, as a whole, but not necessarily individually, has lost its way in the dizzying maze of technological advances in audio, video and the Internet that have occurred during the past five or more years.
The streets of the broadcasting industry are paved with stories of individual and collective failures that have led to great successes. It is the hope of RDN that those who have lost their jobs will pledge to use their unique skills and determination to overcome the temporary setbacks of unemployment.
Larry Shannon, publisher of RadioDailyNews.com said, “2007 seems to have been a year of waiting. Waiting for the completion of and anticipated sales and mergers of media companies including Clear Channel, ABC Radio, Citadel, Cumulus, among others. Technology and the understanding of it, how to compete against it and find ways to use it to benefit and reinvigorate terrestrial radio, seem to have overwhelmed broadcasting industry leaders again in 2007 as they did in 2006. But, RadioDailyNews.com believes that there is hope and we should all be on the outlook for signs that 2008 will yield better results. Perhaps one or more of those who lost their jobs in 2007 will find the answers.”
