Welcome to SDRadio for Monday, March 31, 2008

Wally PhillipsWGN AM 720 icon Wally Phillips (pictured) passed away last week. San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson did an on-air tribute to the radio legend. Wally’s radio career had an influence on Mark… hear it here, select the podcast marked “Wally Phillips Tribute”.

TowerPadres regular season play begins today, and again XX Sports Radio 1090AM and 105.7FM have the exclusive radio broadcasts. This year there’s the added partnership with sister station “San Diego 1700AM” (which changed from financial talk to news/talk last fall). XX provides sports updates for 1700, and there’s news/talk features from 1700 on XX. In recent days SD1700 has carried selected Padres pre-season and NCAA finals action to assist XX Sports. Expect more of this new, unique partnership to expand this season. Mark Larson will also broadcast several special shows from Petco Park in the coming months.

FAIR AND BALANCED: San Diego 1700 is enhancing its “Both Sides, Now” theme with Mark in the mornings on the right and Stacy Taylor, afternoons from the left. Mark is doing more national shows, guest-hosting for Mike Reagan, while Stacy fills in for Randi Rhodes and Lionel. No other station is offering such a diverse mix of viewpoints in San Diego.

baseballglove.jpgPlay Ball: Padres start their quest for the 2008 season tonight at the park in San Diego. Hear all the coverage on XX Sports at 1090 AM and 105.7 FM. Espanol can be heard on XEMO-AM 860.

Coming back for his second year is Andy Masur. The former Cubs announcer fit in — quickly — in the broadcast booth. Also returning is Jerry Coleman and Friar Ted Leitner. Ted and Andy will work the first three innings. Jerry will call the fourth inning, and then work the fifth with Andy, and the sixth with Ted (what did you do today, Jerry?).

XEMO-AM La Poderosa is the exclusive Spanish-language broadcast home of the Padres. These broadcasts are geared toward both sides of the border for the Latino community. La Poderosa means “the powerful one”.

john q lawrenceFormer KyXy morning newsman John Q. Lawrence writes at Radio-Info about his dismissal from the morning show and his “new” position. John posted over the weekend: “I can assure you producing the public affairs show isn’t going to make the mortgage payment. It ‘is’ a welcome supplement though and I’m happy I was given the option.”

Clear Channel Communications is charting unknown waters. The corporate plan to go private has hit several speed bumps on the way, and last week’s tidal wave of bad news probably killed the plan. The multi-billion dollar deal was in trouble when the leading banks withheld their financing for the buy out.

Clear Channel Communications with Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital Partners LLC filed complaints in court in Texas. So far a judge has favored the buy out proposal, but the banks have not moved forward.

Mark Austerman, operator of Michigan Radio Guide writes: “Behind all the recent financial wrangling and lawsuits that are trying to salvage funding for the biggest radio deal ever, there are thousands of Clear Channel employees wondering what their futures hold no matter what the final outcome is. The market value of the company took a severe hit this week in light of the turmoil, and many industry insiders predict more cost cutting soon, possibly along with the sale of more of the company’s radio stations in small and medium markets.

“With all the bad news seemingly throughout the radio industry, one thing has become clear — a career in radio is no longer more glamorous or secure than any other job. At least for now, choosing a career in radio requires a strong constitution and an even greater love of the work itself than ever before.”

Stay Tuned.

gardencompass.jpgSpring has come and it’s time to plant the garden for summer and fall! Receive tailor made advice from local experts via the Garden Compass. The show is heard here on San Diego 1700 on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Hosted by Bryan Main along with garden experts Bruce Asakawa, Sharon Asakawa and John Bagnasco, the Garden Compass radio program gives advice not only for San Diego and California, but also for the adjacent states.

Chris Cantore checks in: “I’ve posted NEW podcasts/blogs/videos via www.chriscantore.com. Chris writes that “updates include… cantore.podcast: “episode six — not the easter bunny.” An unexpected (supernatural) guest visits my son?”

Chris also hints at a big announcement and other great info. See his website for more info.

Old Rumors continue to resurface that an oldies format might be coming to San Diego. Is this a Stay Tuned item or more bunting for a format change?

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your broadcast day. See YOU on the radio today and here later in the broadcast week!!

    Remembering Radio Legend Art Way

Art Way, former host on XEAK, KGB, KCPQ and others

Ronnie Way informs about the passing of Art Way:

artway_radio.jpgIt is with a very sad heart that I am informing you that Art did not survive his latest heart attack. He was taken to the ER on (last) Friday morning, then to the hospital, then to the ICU. He was in good spirits and seemed to be bouncing back, but they could not stop the chest pains. He was transferred to Scripps Memorial early Monday morning for an angiogram, three stents, and put on dialysis when his kidneys began to fail. His heart finally stopped completely despite the brave efforts of the cardiology staff. He passed at 4:52 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, with most of his loving family at his side.

Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church on Navajo in El Cajon on Tuesday, April 1st at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial reception. Interment will be held at Ft. Rosecrans the following day at 11 AM.

His wife of almost 52 years, Ronnie.

      CCU

Clear Channel Communications reported to Wall Street that the proposed buyout may not close.

      See AP Story.

Major banks that were part of the deal are withholding the loans to close the private buy out. There is considerable talk on the street that the company should remain public as the cash flow and profit margin is favorable.

THE MAN WHO LICENSED AM 1170 IN SAN DIEGO

      By David M. Leonard

clinton-mckinnon.jpgThe McKinnon name is easily recognizable in San Diego media. C. Dan McKinnon is the majority stockholder of McKinnon Broadcasting and is the former owner of KSON radio. His brother, Michael D. McKinnon is the minority stockholder of McKinnon Broadcasting and is the owner of Home and Garden Lifestyles Magazine. But this family dynasty in local media extends to World War II. At that time, San Diego had only two radio stations and one daily newspaper.

Their father, Clinton Dotson McKinnon, was described in Time Magazine as “a jockey-sized little fireball with unruly black hair and bounding energy.” He was immensely successful in journalism and in politics. He was a journalist and a newspaper owner who strung together several throwaway papers to form the Democrat-leaning San Diego Journal in 1944 to compete with the larger Republican-leaning San Diego Tribune. This was possible because the Roosevelt administration rationed newsprint to the Journal as a means to level the competition. It was the only daily newspaper started during World War II.

kcbqsurvey.jpgAmong the Journal staff were columnist Neil Morgan and future Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin. By 1947, the San Diego Journal was well established and McKinnon received a commercial radio license to broadcast at 1170 kilocycles on the AM dial as (K) (S)an (D)iego (J)ournal, (KSDJ). But quickly, his career took a new turn in 1948.

1170 KCBQClinton McKinnon was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1948 to a seat that was the last to represent the entire county of San Diego. He sold the San Diego Journal and KSDJ upon his election to Congress and focused on water projects for San Diego. After two terms in office, his ambition led him to seek the US Senate. William Knowland was the incumbent, and in these days of cross-filing without party limitations, Knowland won the Republican and Democratic primaries for re-election. McKinnon remained active in politics as a delegate to the 1952 and 1956 Democratic conventions.

clinton-mckinnon-bio.jpg Click image to enlarge. By 1954, McKinnon was vice chairman of the state’s Democratic Central Committee when he acquired the Los Angeles Daily News. In 1956, McKinnon acquired KVOA TV and radio in Tucson, but sold the radio station in 1958. Later, he would publish the La Jolla Light and the Coronado Journal. Clinton McKinnon died in La Jolla in 2001. Like his father, C. Dan McKinnon is involved in media and politics. But this McKinnon served as the national campaign chairman for Republican Duncan Hunter in his quest for President in 2008.

KSDJ remained as a profitable enterprise under different call letters after Clinton McKinnon sold it in 1948. That story will appear next time.

newcountry957.pngMike O’Brian of New Country 95.7 writes about the recent station direction in country music: “We have been designing this for some time. We conducted the single largest country research study in San Diego history and found that there was a real hole for a newer, more current, more hip country station…one that appeals to a 25-39 year old female. mikeobrian.jpgGregg Swedeberg (KEEY-FM) and I put it together with a strong focus on current music….a stark contrast to the 44 years of heritage from cross-town competitor KSON. They do a great job of playing old country. This is NOT that. New Country’s play list will center around Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban and Taylor Swift.”

Tony and Kris remain in the morning drive. Delana comes in at 10 a.m. to kick it in for lunch. Then Mike takes his turn at 3 p.m.

San Diego’s high-flying Cal Walker is heard in studio when giving reports for KOGO, Star 94.1 and other stations. In part, Clear Channel Communications has cut the expense of having Cal in the air. His aircraft is primed and ready to be up in the air, if needed. This is a similar move as took place in Los Angeles’ Mike Nolan’s KFI In The Sky.

Of course, the irony: The only stations with traffic air reports are television stations.

sign.jpg760 KFMB’s Carina Lowry checks in: “In an election year, we’re exposed to a barrage of opinion and rhetoric. America is at a crossroads, and idle talk means nothing when the stakes are raised so high. This year, it’s action and interaction… information and DELIBERATION THAT will guide us toward making the right choices. That’s why yes on 760 MAKES so much sense.”

The station has started a web site at YesOn760.com.

Company moves: Clear Channel Communications quest to go private is on shaky ground, according to financial experts. The strike price and the stock price are out of alignment. Also the much awaited decision for XM and Sirius satellite radio to merge is expected with caveats.

jeffjer.jpgStar 94.1’s morning team of Jeff and Jer continue to be the morning spot for San Diego. On their fifth station in town, the duo have out lived several format changes, and continue to live their life on the radio. Recently, San Diego-based Ranch and Coast named them the top radio show in the county. See the info at Ranch and Coast.

Jeff and Jer can be heard from 6 to 10 a.m. on Star 94.1 FM, along with Tommy Sablan, Laura Cain, Randy Hoag, and Delana Bennett.

cantore.pngChris Cantore, has been busy. Although he is presently missing from the airwaves, you can find his multi-media experience at ChrisCantore.com. Right now, the best bet is the flix section with the video titled, “What Happened To Chris Cantore”.

Also missing from the airwaves is Cindy Pace. She can be found at CindyPace.com. She was heard recently at 101.5 KGB, and 103.7 Planet FM in San Diego.

The wife of comedian Mike Pace, has her complete bio and background at the web site.

mike.jpgAlso noted: former 103.7 FM host Mike Dawson is in LA. He is part of the Adam Carolla program. Mike is also found in the band circuit in the LA basin when not hitting the beach or playing his guitar. Mike writes, “My parents love me. Because of this, they allowed me to completely disregard my college education to pursue a career in radio. I’ve been a DJ in San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Barbara. I’ve never lived more than 20 miles from the beach and I never go there. It’s not that I don’t like the beach, it’s just that getting there smacks of too much effort. I’ve never been too big on effort. Hey, I talk for a living. And they pay me for it. So who’s the joke really on?”

So what does he do at the show? “The bumper music and voice that you hear getting in to and out of The Adam Carolla Show? Well, that’s me. And yes, I am talking to you. No, not you, you. And they said you’re crazy.” Thanks Mike, you can check his music out at MySpace.com as well.

2006 nominationKSON’s Cliff and Company have been nominated in the category of “On-Air Personality of the Year (Major Market)”. The 43rd event will be televised on CBS in May. This graphic is from 2006!

Welcome to SDRadio for Wednesday, March 5, 2008. This report in ((stereo)) where available.

arnoldcigar.jpgMark Larson and the GOVERNATOR: San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson was invited to Sacramento for a private meeting with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Word is that the California leader wants to know what conservatives are thinking about state issues. The chat took place in Arnold’s famous ’smoking tent’ (where most of the real deals get made). No word if Mark received a famed cigar as a souvenir.

johnq_sm.jpg101.5 KGB’s Bobbie Hill writes about the dismissal of John Q. Lawrence for KyXy. “The man who gave a young woman with no previous on air experience a chance on the air in America’s Finest City was John Q. Lawrence. I was that “intern” 14 years ago, hanging around Shadow Traffic waiting for a chance. It was John Q. who trusted my voice and gave me that chance.”

She adds: “John Q. is and was a gentleman and a class act!”

      See yesterday’s report.

KUSI’s John Coleman was the founder of The Weather Channel. John told an audience at the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change in New York that he is “highly critical of global warming alarmism”.

The all-weather station is being sold and John had thoughts about that.

clouds.jpg“The Weather Channel had great promise, and that’s all gone now because they’ve made every mistake in the book on what they’ve done and how they’ve done it and it’s very sad,” John said. “It’s now for sale and there’s a new owner of The Weather Channel will be announced – several billion dollars having changed hands in the near future. Let’s hope the new owners can recapture the vision and stop reporting the traffic, telling us what to think and start giving us useful weather information.”

John’s weathercast is part of the KUSI-TV local news.

Starting today, Clear Channel San Diego will be at the Rady Children’s Hospital. The cluster will host a telethon to raise money for the local charity. The broadcast ends on Friday.

johnq_sm.jpgJohn Q. Lawrence was part of the morning staple at KyXy’s morning drive. Along with partners Kevin Dean, Sonny West, and Susan DeVincent, John’s newscast were the best.

He did it the best way: wrote the news, and delivered the reports with truth and conviction — unlike any radio newscaster in the county. He covered all points of the county and the world. John’s newscast were the hallmark of San Diego.

      Until CBS Radio fired him.

Jerry Del Colliano said it best this week with: “In sports, when you lose, they fire the manager. In radio, when you lose, they fire the team.

Who is filling in for Tony and Kris at US 95.7 this week?

kris_sm.jpgKyXy’s evening broadcast includes the talents of Kris Toledo. Before joining KyXy 96.5 she was a movie and music production executive representing companies in New York, Los Angeles and London. She was a Radio & Television major at Palomar College and SDSU, eventually turning her sights on a career in radio.

She stopped by the SDRadio cyber offices and answered a few questions.

SDRadio: Kris, how long have you been at Kyxy

Kris: Never has 4 years flown by faster. My anniversary is in February of course.. The month of “Lerv” as it is often sung…

SDRadio: You have an extensive background in the media. What else have you done?

Kris: I’ve done a lot but there’s still more to do! I haven’t published any cookbooks (yet) or hosted a TV talk show or presented an Oscar! A girl has to shoot big Chris ;-)

But my path has been filled with amazing moments.. I’ve been in an arena of twenty thousand screaming fans for a Jay-Z concert where I produced the opening film to his on-stage entrance. I’ve shot rock bands from Finland in the English countryside, shot Phil Collins on the Paramount Lot, Finger 11 in Toronto and Missy Elliot in Miami, to the NWA reunion video. I’ve been a record label exec, produced a movie, and been in a blockbuster hit movie. But I’m most proud of the work I did starting up the Music Video arm for Quentin Taratino and Lawrence Bender’s Production shingle, A Band Apart. (they made Pulp Fiction and Good Will Hunting etc). It was the coolest..What’s cooler than that!

      SDRadio: Why KyXy Love Songs?

Kris: It’s a rare opportunity at an establishment like Kicksy to get on the mic fulltime. This station has been here over 20 years and the Jocks have been here almost as long. It tops the ratings and is owned by an extraordinary entertainment house, CBS Radio. That all made it a no-brainer. On a personal level- Love Songs is special by creating a one-on-one relationship with the listeners. I’ve kept connected with my audience through their requests and dedications, from first timers to loyal long-term fans. I’ve been invited to weddings, baby showers, it’s like they have adopted me into their lives and are a member of my family too. That might just be the coolest.

SDRadio: The best audience is right outside your door. What is San Diego
      tellin’ you?

Kris: I share my personal stories on air and on the kyxy website, so San Diegans know me well already. Fans are always thrilled to talk about Kicksy whenever I’m out and about. From the guys at Subway who have Kicksy on in the store, to the man on The Coaster who recognizes my voice or my Starbucks girls who listen- It is so much fun seeing the true excitement they have about knowing there is a real and caring person playing music for them at night. Women tell me they put their babies to sleep to my show. Girls have emailed that it’s the perfect background for scrapbooking with friends, makes doing laundry more enjoyable, and couples enjoy it in the car going to dinner. I think the vote is a thumbs-up.

SDRadio: Secrets about the Greener leaving a messy studio? Or is it hold over from Sam Bass — or Mean Kevin Dean?

No no.. Actually it’s Sonny West! He destroys the place every morning. Takes us all day to clean up after him. He’s a wild man! LOL..

Thanks Kris for stopping by. You can hear her weeknights starting at 7 p.m.

cantore1.jpgRadio host and personality Chris Cantore can be heard via his on-line podcast. Chris writes: “It’s official, the cantore.podcast is avail for your downloading pleasure.”

The former 91Xer adds that it is “a homegrown, d.i.y. operation, it’s something I’ve put together for my friends…

      Check it out a here.

roger.jpgSan Diego’s Radio Mayor is at it again! On Thursday March 13th Roger will do his four hour radio show from the back parking lot at KOGO on Granite Ridge Drive.

Jimmy Valentine, producer writes, “We’re going to ask you to come by and sign a petition to get a measure on the November ballot that will change the CA Constitution to once and for all declare that in our fair state a marriage is defined only as that union between one man and one woman. We have current law with that language but that law is being challenged by the gender confused and their allies. We need your John and Jane Hancock to get this on the ballot and then get it passed.”

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels today! See YOU on the radio and right here later in the broadcast week!
