More family pets will run away from home this Friday than during any other day of the year because of fireworks. Helen Woodward Animal Center is encouraging families to take a few simple precautions and make sure that their pets are safe and secure during Independence Day weekend fireworks displays.
HWAC spokesman John Van Zante says, “Even the echo and sound of fireworks several miles away can terrify a family pet. If they don’t have a safe place to hide, or if there’s a way for them to run out a door or escape over a fence, your pet could be gone.”
HWAC offers a few suggestions for families to keep their pets safe this week.
* Do not take your pets along to the fireworks displays.
* Bring your pets indoors before fireworks displays begin.
* Make sure that your pets have access to their favorite “safe place” or find a quiet, comfortable, enclosed room where your pets can “hide” if they need to.
* If you go to a fireworks display and leave your pets at home, leave the radio or television set on so there is some “normal” background noise.
Van Zante says this a good time to make sure your pets are micro-chipped. “Many pets that run away during the fireworks slip out of their collars. A micro-chip I.D. with correct contact information assures that your pet can be returned if it ends up at a shelter.”
What if your pet escapes in spite of your efforts? “Search through your neighborhood right away…then keep it up. Don’t quit after a day or two. Check with the animal shelters and keep checking for several weeks. You can also post signs in your neighborhood, but the best thing to do is to make sure your pets never run away to begin with.”
For more information call Helen Woodward Animal Center at 858-756-4117 or visit the Center at 6461 El Apajo Road. For the location of the shelters nearest you log on to AnimalCenter.org.
The adoptions department at Helen Woodward Animal Center will be open
from 11 am to 6 pm on the 4th of July.

Please welcome MyServer.org to SDRadio. Their ad helps keep the website on-line.
Also welcome Rich Brother Robbin! His on-line streaming site brings oldies world wide with an San Diego feel.
Doug Myrland has long been a friend of radio and television at KPBS-FM and TV. The long time general manager of the public radio and television station in the market, he has the San Diego station ahead of others in the new spectrum. One of the first television and radio stations to embrace digital transmission, Doug is also not afraid to face the folks that question decisions at the station from financial to programming.
Doug has one interest in mind; it is the listening and viewing public that make the station one of the premiere stations in the country. Serving the public interest and bringing fine programming on both spectrum’s, Doug and his staff has made the mark that other stations strive for.
At the end of December, Doug will hang up his GM hat and trade it in for a consultant duty for at least a year. Doug told Randy Dotinga at the North County Times, “”I feel strongly that people like me should move on while they’re ahead,” he said. “I’m feeling like we’ve accomplished a lot in this organization. I want people to remember me fondly or at least as someone who didn’t stay past their welcome.”
Joining the station in 1992, Doug has expanded the news operation, revamped the Radio Reading Service, added a station in Calexico, and started multicasting HDRadio that includes full time classical music. Likewise on the TV side, Doug’s oversight has brought premiere programming via high definition television and offers a full time Spanish-language public station to the area.
Thanks is not enough; you made the bar higher and yet were kind enough to take the time to answer questions about the future of the station. Thanks!
Radio Note: I know it’s Monday …. the brain trust at the HDRadio Alliance are threatening to crank up the promotion a notch. (Insert massive yawn here.) The misaligned idea that a digital standard will have listeners foaming at the mouth to buy a $300 radio is … interesting. The financial experts expect the radios need to come down in price. Where there are fine HDRadios available for about $100, the signal reliability, especially in terrain like San Diego, dampens sales and promotion. The radio group wants the HD section to have a power boost. That would help extend the coverage around the area.
Content needs to be improved. KPBS fills a need with classic music and Groove Salad. KyXy and Radio Sophie program their multicast stations very well. Some Clear Channel stations in the market has have niche programming. But in all, there is no real hook for the public. HDRadio remains a Stay Digitally Tuned item.
One Month to Fox 5: San Diego’s television horizon is changing. On August 1, KSWB-TV becomes part of the FOX TV Network. Today, the station is pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Chrissy Russo as the weather and traffic anchor for the station’s new “Fox 5 Morning News”. Set to debut on August 1, 2008 and airing weekdays, “Fox 5 Morning News” will be a 4-hour local newscast covering all of San Diego and produced entirely in High Definition. “Fox 5 Morning News” will be joined seven nights a week by the 1-hour “Fox 5 News at Ten”.
Chrissy Russo is well known to San Diego news viewers for her distinctive style as a local weather and traffic anchor. Recognizable from her anchor six years at local station XETV, Chrissy served as morning weather and traffic anchor beginning in 2002. Chrissy brought a unique audience pleasing high-energy performance to the daily routine of anchoring weather and traffic. Since Opening Day 2006, Chrissy has also been seen locally on Channel 4 San Diego as a feature sports reporter covering Padres game day, interviewing athletes and celebrities alike.
In 2004 Ms. Russo began hosting “Global Trends”, the in flight business and trends showcase program for Continental Airlines. In 2001 Chrissy reported news for OCN in Santa Ana and also for Metro News and Traffic.in San Diego. From 1999 to 2001 Chrissy was reporter and anchor for CBS affiliate WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia, where she was known for her strong work as a live news reporter.
Ms. Russo is a graduate of Old Dominion University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications and minored in English and Marketing.
“”We are looking forward to Chrissy bringing Fox 5 Morning News viewers the local traffic and weather. She has a style that is just terrific, a strong all around news background and she knows San Diego”, said Rich Goldner, Fox 5 news director. “We have some fun new twists in store for our morning news and Chrissy will help bring them to life in weather and traffic.”

This is the last week this summer that Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw will be giving away a thousand dollars to the area needy. It is not too late to register at 101.5 KGB. See the web site for all the details.
The proceeds from the annual Best Of CD makes the Grand A Day Giveaway possible. The CD, which comes out near Thanksgiving, is the annual ritual that many fans of the San Diego show gather for their collection. It is also a good time snap of the top rated show in the market. Without the craftmanship of Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw, the mornings would be …. a lot emptier.
San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson continues to snag the big name exclusive news maker interviews every day. In the wake of the weekend Pentagon report about what’s worked and what’s not in Iraq, the former Commander of U.S. Central Command, Gen. John Abizaid, will join Mark on his morning show this week. Mark spent several days with Abizaid in the Middle East covering Iraq and the region. He’s also been invited back to the area this year (and Afghanistan), and may link up with the locally based USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) in the Persian Gulf later this year.
Expected on Mark’s shortly after the July 4th holiday, energy billionaire T. Boone Pickens (who will soon announce a new private initiative for America) and actor Jon Voight (yes, that guy, who’s father of Angelina Jolie). Mark will also emcee the July 9th San Diego event featuring Voight, Sen. John McCain and wife Cindy. Says Mark: “If Senator McCain wants to blunt the ‘age issue’, he should have Cindy with him at every opportunity. She’s a very compelling speaker, too.”
On the other side of the spectrum is afternoon host Stacy Taylor. Not that the host is in harm’s way at the station, Stacy continues to be the voice of the other side of the house. Stacy’s show is on from 3 to 6 p.m., and offers ideas, views, and commentary not heard elsewhere in the market. Stacy is not an odd fit at the station. Program Director Mark Larson told SDRadio when the current format kicked off that this is a station that is more about San Diego than a platform; the station continues to fill news and talk from both sides. It’s good to hear Mark on Stacy’s show and likewise, for Stacy to be on Mark’s morning drive. Station owner John Lynch has encouraged Stacy and Mark to keep the talk aspect up.
There are many things that can make you go, “Hmmm”. Daily changes a the gas pump, free tacos with gas (receipt), or the quest by the San Diego Jack FM morning show. Somehow, the picture of the Man doesn’t surprise fans of the show on 100.7 FM.
Check the site out at San Diego Jack Mornings.
Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels today!! See YOU on the radio today and here later this. More news as it happens and the next regularly scheduled news break is on Thursday.

Scott Rice writes: “I just wanted to let everyone know that our friend and fellow broadcaster, John Morgan past away Friday morning. John died of complications of Prostate cancer. As soon as I get the details of John’s memorial services in Indiana, I will send out an email.
“John had a masters degree in Radio and Television from San Diego State, and spent his life doing what he truly loved RADIO. John not only worked in it, but collected radios. John met the love of his life, Marilyn, while working at KFMB radio. John’s first job was working at KGB 1360 in the mid 1950s as an intern. And of course most recently he was with us at Clear Channel San Diego. He was a husband, father, broadcaster, and friend. In September of 2006 John retired from broadcasting to move to Roanoke, Indiana to live in a farm house. Marilyn told me that when he picked out the house that he didn’t know if it even had closets, but he could tell her every detail of the workshop, and how it would be perfect to work on old radios. John unfortunately never got to set up his dream workshop, and all of the radios were still packed in boxes. Shortly after he got to Indiana he found the cancer was back, and worse than ever.
“In broadcasting, most engineers are very weird in one fashion or another (present company included!), but John was a very special person. John genuinely loved everyone he worked with, and always had a purely positive outlook on life, even after he was diagnosed with cancer.
“John Morgan was a great man, and a fine Christian. The world was made better by his presence for the last 70 years. Everyone that knew John Morgan was proud to call him our friend, and he was proud to be our friend.

Update: On Thursday, June 12, Kimberly King takes to the sky to deliver her final traffic reports for the San Diego NBC affiliate KNSD-TV. A popular fixture on the local airwaves since 1994, San Diego native King will mark her last day with a final broadcast from Newschopper 7/39, before embarking on a new journey.
Leaving to pursue new opportunities and have the flexibility to focus on her non-profit efforts for local organizations including the San Diego United Cerebral Palsy “Ride Without Limits”, King says her time with NBC has been a wonderful learning experience.
“I have essentially grown up on-air,” notes King. “My major life moments have been broadcast – from getting married to the birth of my two children. I’m so honored that San Diego has welcomed me into their lives on a daily basis.”
Serving many different roles in her ten years with NBC, King has logged more than 2000 flight hours covering morning and evening commuter traffic as well as breaking news. King hosted Streetside San Diego, Must See TV on NBC, Olympic Ozone, Holidays on Horton Square and the Emmy-winning Behind the Scenes with Kimberly King, which she also produced. Renowned for putting guests at ease, King has interviewed celebrities from Ellen DeGeneres, Jerry Lewis, James Blunt, Megan Mullally, David Duchovny and Jon Waters to local athletes including LaDanian Tomlinson, Kassim Osgood, Steve Finley and Trevor Hoffman.
King plans to vacation with her family before embarking on several new adventures in San Diego, including a turn as celebrity contestant in the “Malashock Thinks You Can Dance” fundraiser this September.
“I look forward to being more active in the San Diego community and to be able to spotlight the personal stories of local people and organizations. You’re likely to see me on-air again soon, as I doubt I will able to relax for too long,” King joked.
King studied music, dance, voice, and theatre at the San Diego High School of Creative and Performing Arts before attending USIU’s School of Performing and Visual Arts College on a Musical Theatre scholarship. She graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication.
~~~~
Her brother, Kevin Taylor, tells SDRadio, “After eleven years with NBC 7/39, my sister, Kimberly King is leaving the station as of June 12th. After five shows, an Emmy and plenty of fond memories at The Peacock, she will no longer be “stuck in traffic” and is moving in a different direction and in the process of negotiating future positions.”
Kevin adds, “She’s still at the station through the 12th and you can catch her traffic reports during the 4, 5, and 6 p.m. newscasts!”
Also: Kevin is back in San Diego. He said, “After four years in Palm Springs, I’m back in San Diego and am working as a Development Officer at the San Diego LGBT Community Center! All is well and I still miss the good times at KPOP 1360 AM!”
Stay digitally tuned!
KSWB-TV is pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Kathleen Bade as the weeknight anchor for the station’s new “Fox 5 News at Ten”. Set to debut on August 1, 2008, “Fox 5 News at Ten” will be a 1-hour local newscast covering all of San Diego and produced entirely in High Definition. “Fox 5 News at Ten” will be joined weekdays by the 4-hour “Fox 5 Morning News”.
Kathleen Bade is a familiar face to San Diego news viewers from her seven years covering the market. Recognizable from her anchoring at local CBS affiliate KFMB-TV, Ms. Bade served as news anchor for the station’s 4:00 pm, 6:30 pm and 11:00 pm newscasts from 2001 through 2007. She delivered the nightly “Your World Right Now” reports and the award winning “Consumer Alert” reports. Additionally Kathleen provided live election coverage from Golden Hall and hosted special event programs including coverage of the David Westerfield Murder Trial.
During her tenure at the station its 11:00 pm newscast went to number one in local ratings, a first in 20 years. While in San Diego, Ms. Bade earned two local Emmy Awards for her work. In 2006, San Diego County Adoptions recognized Kathleen’s outstanding efforts on behalf of area foster children.
Prior to San Diego, Kathleen worked at KSAZ-TV in Phoenix. Here she began as morning and noon weather anchor, and was quickly promoted to weekend main anchor. Later when the station switched from CBS to Fox, Ms. Bade was on the anchor team for a new 4-hour morning show.
Ms. Bade began her television career as a writer in Phoenix at KPHO-TV and got her on camera start in Yuma. She is a graduate of Arizona State University, where she became the first student to earn the William Randolph Hearst Award from the Walter Cronkite School of Telecommunications and Journalism.
“We are pleased that someone of Kathleen’s news and market experience will lead our “Fox 5 News at Ten”, said Ray Schonbak, vice-president and general manager of KSWB-TV. “She is a gifted talent and an outstanding person that we are delighted to have on our team.” Adds Fox 5 news director Rich Goldner, “Kathleen is going to be a great anchor for our “Fox 5 News at Ten”, someone with knowledge of the market who the viewers can relate well too. We are very excited to have her.”
Also joining the station: Ms. Arthel Neville as the morning anchor for the station’s new “Fox 5 Morning News”. Set to debut on August 1, 2008, “Fox 5 Morning News” will be a 4-hour local newscast covering all of San Diego and produced entirely in High Definition. “Fox 5 Morning News” will be joined weekdays by the 1-hour “Fox 5 News at Ten”.
Arthel Neville is one of the most unique talents working in broadcast television today, with a professional background that spans national and local newscasts, hard news coverage, morning and evening news, as well as syndicated and entertainment programming. She is a very familiar face for her success and popularity working on CNN, The Fox News Channel, E! Entertainment Television, “Extra”, “Good Day Live”, “Geraldo at Large”, “The O’Reily Factor” and more.
Ms. Neville is a TV pioneer with many “firsts” in her career. Arthel came to national attention in the early 90’s for her interview show “Extreme Close-Up” on the E! Entertainment Network. With this assignment she became the nation’s first high profile African American female entertainment host/co-producer. Next, she launched the hit syndicated show “Extra” for Warner Bros., becoming the first African American female host of a nationally syndicated entertainment magazine show.
In 2002, Ms. Neville joined CNN to become the host of “Talk Back Live with Arthel Neville”, becoming the first African American woman to host her own show on the news network. This groundbreaking show combined news of the day, a live audience and guest interviews in-studio and via satellite, phone and the internet. While at CNN Arthel also served as morning, daytime and weekend news anchor. Prior to her work at CNN Ms. Neville worked for the Fox Network syndicated news magazine “Fox Files” and with The Fox News Channel as anchor, correspondent, host and also as contributor to “The O’Reilly Factor”.
In 2005, Ms. Neville served as correspondent for the syndicated show “A Current Affair”, covering many stories including Hurricane Katrina in her hometown of New Orleans. Ms. Neville began her television career in New Orleans at WWL-TV, and later anchored at WVUE. Arthel also worked in the Austin and Houston markets. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and received the Outstanding Young Texas Ex Alumni Award in 2003.
“To have someone such as Arthel with her diverse experience leading our “Fox 5 Morning News” is a credit to the San Diego market and to the many talented people at KSWB”, said Ray Schonbak, vice-president and general manager of KSWB-TV. “Arthel brings with her an insight to in depth news reporting while retaining the ability to communicate on all levels with her warmth and humor.” Adds Fox 5 news director Rich Goldner, “Arthel brings a wealth of talent — she is able to handle the daily turns it takes to drive a morning newscast. The morning newscasts are based on “moments” — she will help bring them home to viewers.”
Clear Channel bosses have told the company to reign in all cash. In a memo to the company, the proposed private buy out has the company keeping all cash in reserve for the eventual payout. The deal, worth $36 a share, would require an extensive outlay of $$$ in case current company owners did not opt for the stub equity option.
Costs are expected to be cut, and San Antonio is dialing for dollars to fill the Texas coffers.
In a week that couldn’t get any “weirder” for workers of Clear Channel Communications, the staff was given the opportunity to get their own copy of Clear Vision. The newly published book is an inside look on the rise of the station group.
The hardbound edition is also available on-line and at local stores. Or you could wait for the major motion picture staring Brad Pitt as Dave Rickards, Harrison Ford as Chip Franklin, and Jerry Mathers as Helper Boy Randy Hoag, Cookie Chainsaw Randolph will play himself and Lee Hacksaw Hamilton.
Radio Notes: KPBS gathers news in and around the county and is not afraid to test new methods of gathering the facts — or question for the political debate for the City of San Diego. The public station polled followers on Twitter. Questions were used in the debate, the station replied to me via Twitter…..KLAC-AM 570 will be the radio home for the San Diego Chargers come football season. The Charger’s home in San Diego is Rock 105.3. Football season starts in two months!
John Fox, long time radio personality in San Diego, and in Los Angeles, writes about the loss of Bob Dale: (Last) “Wednesday’s item is one of the saddest you’ve had to report in a long time. Bob Dale was not only one of the pioneers and early star/local heroes of San Diego television; he was a genuinely great guy . I don’t think the unctuous Huell Howser could have pulled off Zoorama with the style and relatability Bob Dale did. His personality really shone through on the small screen. Something the consultants from Magid failed to notice, instead focusing on his archaic but trademark bow tie when they recommended letting him go from Channel 8 … big mistake. I had the good fortune to work down the hall from “Uncle Bob” during his last two years at KFMB. He was always up for a chat. And he was a great story teller.
Bob Dale and KFMB engineer Bob Crottinger had me in stitches over a story about their encounter with a Zoo patron in the Men’s room separating the Children’s zoo from the main San Diego Zoo. It was commercial break during a live episode of Zoorama. Now remember, this was around 50 years ago. There were no self-contained or wireless cameras and the act of TV broadcasting was something fairly new, mysterious and maybe a little frightening to some people. The Bobs were moving a large TV camera, tripod and all the attached cables through the restroom from one section of the zoo to another because the equipment wouldn’t fit through the outside turnstile. Crotty thought it would be funny to stop, aim the camera at a man standing at the urinal and point at him as if “cueing” him to action. It was not aired or recorded, and Dale protested during the telling that it was a cruel joke to play, but they both agreed the man’s expression was priceless! Said Dale, “No word on what kind of ‘performance anxiety’ the poor guy may have developed after that!” (Go to News 8 to see that early era of Bob’s TV career)
Bob Dale’s annual Christmas story about the “Booze Balls” was a classic. I had him on the B-Morning Zoo back in the 80’s for his annual re-telling after he left Channel 8. Which I like to think helped it later become a Channel 39 tradition too. He graciously allowed me to publish it along with many of Don Howard’s great stories in Radio Digest a few years back. It’s a tear-jerker alright … the story, not the fate of Radio Digest. If you don’t remember Bob’s annual Booze Balls story following his Christmas TV weather
report, NBC San Diego has a clip of it. Too bad they don’t have a clip of him playing the Ocarina … another of this Renaissance broadcaster’s many talents.”
San Diego’s own Shotgun Tom Kelly is part of the promotion of the new CBS TV show Swingtown. The summer offering features music that Shotgun plays on oldies K-EARTH 101.
During the red carpet showing last week, Shotgun interviewed Swingtown actress Lana Parrilla. As reported in LARadio, she was excited to met the afternoon host.
Shotgun can be heard in the afternoon drive on the CBS radio station from 3 to 7.
A new “tell-all” book about Clear Channel Communications has hit the street. The company which owns and operates KOGO, Xtra Sports 1360, New Country 95.7, Channel 933, 101.5 KGB, Star 94.1 and Rock 105 has changed the radio horizon for San Diego.
Blue Light Press has the book for sale.
In the press release, the publication promises to show “Throughout Clear Channel’s history, many individuals and organizations have attempted to portray the company according to their own personal motivations or intentions. The company clearly made its share of mistakes as it was going through a tumultuous period of consolidation and growth, but when looked at objectively, most of those errors were minor, the product of inexperience, not the malevolent actions of a company with a runaway management team or an overriding politically activist agenda. This book takes a look at the most egregious “mistakes,” actual or not, and separates fact from fiction”.
