Shotgun Tom visits his son Nick near Tokyo

tom_nick_japan.jpgSan Diego’s own Shotgun Tom Kelly made a trip to Japan to see his son, Nick. He is in the Navy and is stationed on the USS Blue Ridge, based in Yokosuka. The flagship for the U.S. Seventh Fleet, the Blue Ridge is a frequent visitor to many ports in the Far East.

Shotgun writes about his trip: “My vacation to see my son Nick in Japan was wonderful. He squired me around like royalty, with trips on the Bullet Train to Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Tokyo, and road trips to Mt. Fuji and Yokohama. I also toured the Navy Base he is stationed at in Yokosuka and the USS Blue Ridge where he is an IT Specialist.”

blueridge.jpgThe afternoon host who is calling K-EARTH 101 home, has been moving and shaking. “While I was in Tokyo, there was an earthquake with a 6.8 magnitude. That’s 12.2 on the Richter scale for me in less than a week!”

Thanks Shotgun!

      When Shaking News Happens ….

KOGO covers the county with reports from all corners

earthquake-graphic.jpgAs the ground shook this morning at 11:42 a.m., a majority of San Diegans tuned to AM 600. I know this first hand as the tech buildings near Old Town emptied out and portable radios had KOGO tuned in. For that time, San Diego’s station of choice was KOGO.

During the initial reports and the followup, the news crew had a calming effect, ear-witnessed from my vantage point. The entire team assured the listening audience that their city was safe, and quickly pointed out the epi-center was near Los Angles.

Program Director Cliff Albert writes, “Even though there was no major damage, almost everyone felt it..and were talking about it…and when it hits, we don’t know for a while if
it’s going to be lots of damage until reports come in and are checked out during that first hour or two.”

KOGO reporter Phil Farrar checks in. Phil writes, “I don’t want to say our newsroom lives for all of these tragic or possible life threatening stories…but I have never worked with a group of people so dedicated to communicating the latest information to our listeners and the public.”

During the earthquake and seconds after, Phil says the Clear Channel building is “Controlled chaos.” Like clockwork, the news gathering begins.

Phil adds, “Everybody is so cool—there is so much information coming in—and crazy at the same time. But we get it on the air and it sounds really good. I’m so glad to be a part of the KOGO news team.”

Again, the news team did a yeoman’s job today as the calming effect that our city and county was safe and it was apparent in the reports that filled the early afternoon.

xmsirius.jpgSIRIUS Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio today announced that they have completed their merger, resulting in one of the nation’s largest radio companies. The new company plans to change its corporate name to Sirius XM Radio Inc. The combined company’s stock will continue to be traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “SIRI”.

SIRIUS XM Radio begins day one with over 18.5 million subscribers, making it the second-largest radio company, based upon revenue, in the country; and, based upon subscribers, the second largest subscription media business in the U.S. With under 10-percent penetration of the home and car market, the opportunity for continued growth is significant.

The Canada radio groups are discussing the merger.

mike_tat.jpgNew Country 95.7 afternoon host Mike O’Brian broke down and got ink the hard way. Mike writes, “My first tattoo - designed by my father-in-law, David, who is an INCREDIBLE artist! I gotta be honest with ya…I was SO nervous. Just didn’t know what the pain would be like…know what I mean? That first little slide of the needle going across your skin…That was the most terrifying part. Once he started though, honestly, it wasn’t so bad. I had been thinking about getting one for a long time.

Mike adds that his wife says it will be his only tattoo.

Tomorrow, the country station invites you to a special performance direct to your work desktop. Recording artist Taylor Swift will perform tomorrow …and the best part is, you can attend without missing work or leaving the house.

Michael Wiener, also known as Michael Savage, and heard on 760 KFMB has foot and mouth disease. Last week a federal judge dismissed his lawsuit against an Islamic civil rights group. The afternoon host sued the “Council on American-Islamic Relations”. He claimed the group violated his rights in a letter-writing campain to get advertisers to boycott his show. The group used segments of his radio program in the campaign. During one of his lengthy tirades, the host called the book of Quran “book of hate” and other questionable quips.

Then two weeks ago, the host upset parents of autistic children when he referred to them as “brats”.

In all, the host is the third most listened to host during the latest radio ratings. He is right behind Sean Hannity. Also: A press release by one group said two national chains had dropped their advertising on the Talk Radio Network show. That’s all good except the two companies cited … did not advertise on his show.

The autistic comment has cost the show host stations in Mississippi and in Oregan.

jazzgrant.pngKiFM-FM has released the 2008 CD benefit sampler titled All That Jazz. The proceeds from the CD will assist local public schools throughout the county with their music programs.

Welcome Back: Today marks the return of Oz Medina . He kicks off the KPRi day. He was previously at KBCO, KROQ and 91X…. also Bill Pugh. He has landed — again — at Clear Channel Communications San Diego office. Bill rejoins after a stint at Sporting Radio News and XX Sports Radio. He takes on the duties as operations manager. He’ll have time to focus on Xtra Sports 1360 that has yet to crack the ratings book. KLAC has shown up from LA. The Sports Page will be retooled after the Union-Tribune drops its association with the radio station.

Former evening host at KFI tells about the premiere of his film documentary. It’s called, “Blocking the Path to 9/11″ will be held Friday evening, August 15th at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles.

zieglerjohnleah30.jpgJohn writes, “The film, which tells the behind-the-scenes, real story of what happened to the highly controversial ABC mini-series “The Path to 9/11.” (Pictured: John with former KFI news announcer Leah Brandon.)

Listeners to Ziegler’s old KFI radio show will remember that the censorship of “The Path to 9/11″ was a frequent topic on the program.

John adds, “This is an incredibly interesting and important story that has never been told before.”

FCC is Sirius: XM to be bought by Sirius

The FCC voted Friday and will let Sirius buy rival XM Satellite radio. The merger, once completed, will create a radio monopoly from above. Within 90-days of the new company several items have to be completed.

The HDRadio move to include radio receivers for ground-based stations was not considered. At present, subscribers will not have to buy new radios. Nor will prices rise for at least three-years.

Each company paid a fine to the government, mostly for illegal or over-powered ground repeater systems.

                      A cruel savage weiner

San Diego Blog NewsAdd to Technorati Favorites

Savage opens up a firestorm with poor-choiced words

savage.jpgMichael Weiner, a.k.a., Michael Savage, heard on 760 KFMB, had some strong words about autistic children. Described as cruel and inhumane, a group has called for his firing, and protests at radio stations have been reported coast-to-coast.

                      From MichaelSavage.com:

“My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as “autistic.”

Just as some drug companies have overdiagnosed “ADD” and “ADHD” to peddle dangerous speed-like drugs to children as young as 4 years of age, this cartel of doctors and drug companies is now creating a national panic by overdiagnosing “autism, for which there is no definitive medical diagnosis.”

That was in response to the July 16 comments that Savage said on air that autistic children are a, “fraud, a racket. … I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’”

His show airs afternoons from 3 to 6.

Update: The show has been dropped from a group of stations in Mississippi.

A federal appeals court threw out a $550,000 indecency fine against CBS Corporation for the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show that ended with Janet Jackson’s breast-baring “wardrobe malfunction.”

The resulting action had an immediate impact on radio and television as a new “standard” was put in place by the conservative-leaning FCC board.

With the appeals court dismissing the fine, the panel left open that the commission can impose new standards. Stay Tuned.

As he said on his shows last week, “The premise of the boycott is absurd. I’m here every day and there’s never a case of ‘before we take your money are you gay or straight? ‘ There’s absolutely no bias or prejudice day-to-day. The idea that Doug Manchester can get criticized for free speech in his personal life is outrageous. One lobbying group leader said it was OK for Papa Doug to give ’some’ money but $125,000 was ‘too much’. Ridiculous. George Soros and friends give a whole lot more to causes on the other side, and as long as it’s done by the rules, that’s fine. Both sides have the legal right to put their money where their convictions are, getting issues on the ballot 4tank6.jpgand letting Californians decide. There’s also a not-so-subtle attempt to get Manchester to unionize, too. That’s the real issue behind the current pressure. That and the outrage that justices on the California Supreme Court can thwart the will of the people, assuming they’re also legislators.”

The morning host adds: ” I have never, ever been asked by Manchester to take sides on the story. This is about common sense. And free speech.”

LARSON IN IRAQ: As Barack Obama makes history visiting Afghanistan for the first time, and Iraq for a second stop, Mark will produce his 100th radio show for Iraq this week. The special half hour version of his 1700AM morning show, with customized commentary for the troops, airs twice daily weekdays on “A Voice in the Wilderness“, the Iraq radio network operated by Marine Corps Chaplains. It’s heard on all major bases in-country. “It’s a huge honor to be asked to provide this”, notes Mark. “We do it as a labor of love for those laying it all on the line.” Mark’s also been invited back to Afghanistan later this year, as well as visiting the USS Ronald Reagan in the Persian Gulf (his second trip).
