KyXy and Radio Sophie are available world-wide on Apple iPhones as of last Friday. The on-line streams are bundled as part of the AOL Radio application that rolled out with the new iPhone upgrade.
Reception is in stereo.
The two stations are part of the group of CBS radio stations featured from across the USA. Others stations from the region included KNX-AM 1070, K-EARTH 101, KFWB-AM, Los Angeles; and KXNT-840 Las Vegas.
Using the built in location feature of the phone, it is easy to find the two San Diego stations from the nearly 250-on-line streams that are available. Reception and sound quality is great. Traveling around the north county section of San Diego had each station about 30-seconds behind the broadcast stations.
I’ll test the long-reception feature of this application on Wednesday when I travel to the eastern slope of Colorado.
With this free service, Jennifer White at Radio Sophie and Kevin Dean’s KyXy traffic reports can be heard from San Diego to Amsterdam, to Sydney and beyond. AOL Radio is also available on line at Music AOL. iPhone users can download from the applications store for free.
Former White House spokesman Tony Snow was a frequent guest of Mark Larson. Mr. Snow died over the weekend after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mark writes at his Larson Blog web site about their friendship: ” (We) kept in touch regularly, and he was always interested in faith and family more than just politics. He was consistently friendly, open and encouraging. During his first bouts with cancer, a phone call to encourage him would turn into situation where Tony did the encouraging.”
Mark continues, “We also connected well since we’re nearly the same age (within two months), and we often joked about that. He also left memories no one would expect, such as his constant hassling about my hair, telling people it was a hairpiece. In the midst of my interview with Donald Rumsfeld at the White House he playfully messed with me on the subject (and messed up my non-rug hair), including after I’d “thrown him out of the guest chair” to squeeze in the Secretary of Defense.”
Mark first met Mr. Snow at the Cal Thomas/Media Fellowship dinner in Washington, DC in the mid-1990s.
Channel 933’s Hula checks in: ” I wanted to let you know something very cool AJ’s Playhouse is doing this summer! It’s called Total Playhouse Live! We have six Fridays in the summer out at the Wavehouse in Mission Beach for a huge beach party with live performances, wacky games, and tons and tons of prizes!”
Visit the Channel 933 website to see the list of prizes available.
Check out to see when the next event is taking place and the list of guests that will be there. A fun time for summer is had by all.
Hilary joins fm 94/9 today. She takes over for Anya. Anya has made her debut album and must focus time with that. She writes at the web site: “It’s with a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat that I say thank you for the last 5 ½ years of calls, emails, requests, desert island discs, support, and, mostly, for listening. I’ve had the most memorable times of my life here, from interviewing my idol, Frank Black, to covering the Velvet Underground, The Clash and Iggy Pop in our band of DJs at last year’s Anniversary Bash. I couldn’t ask for a more fun-loving and encouraging bunch of co-workers and listeners. This truly is the greatest radio station in the country.”
Starting today, Hilary lands back in the music seat at fm 94/9. She was previously heard on Star 94.1 and 91X. Welcome back Hilary!
If you don’t like the weather forecaster in San Diego, just wait five minutes. It’s been musical chairs recently. Gary Kelley has returned to the air at XETV-TV 6. As reported here last year, Gary exited KGTV-TV 10. Gary Sassaman writes at his website The Innocent Bystander. “Gary replaces Renee Kohn, who was promoted to the daily morning show weather duties on XETV when Chrissy Russo jumped ship to the new Fox 5 (KSWB). Kohn used to do weather on KUSI. As did Terry Burhans, who moved to XETV on the weekends but now is on KGTV. And with that, I think we’ve come full-circle. Careful driving out there, folks!”
As previously reported, on August 1, XETV and KSWB switch network affiliations. XETV is promoting itself as San Diego 6. KSWB will be known as Fox 5 starting Friday, August 1.
