Looking into the rear view mirror eight years ago, no one would have guessed how fractured the delivery system has become: AM, FM, HDRadio, iPod, iPhone, smart phone, Zune, podcast, cell phone audio and delivery, and on-line streaming. San Diego’s listening audience is constantly at a cross-roads.
Coupled with hints of true wi-fi delivery, the future remains bright, you might have to wear shades.
Stations and personalities have come and went; here’s some of the items that come to mind over the last eight years:
Dave Mason taking Kool 99.3 off air
Ken Copper and Cynthia Heath-Kerrigan kicking afternoon’s in style at KPOP.
Shotgun Tom Kelly, while in la LA, not forgetting his San Diego roots.
Dave, Shelly and the Dean of American Sportsmen, Cookie Chainsaw Randolph as they continue to be on the edge of radio and look for ways around the tip of the sword.
Chris McKay taking Fox 1450 on air, only to have it shuttered mere weeks later. He remains the pro.
Voice tracking. Hate it; live and local is always better.
Rick Roberts fills the KFMB airwaves as he pontificates on local issues.
Art Bell hanging up the headphones; but joins the Coast To Coast AM broadcast for fun a couple times a year.
Understanding the pure comic genius of Chip Franklin at KOGO.
Never doubting Robert and co-owner Jonathon Schwartz at KPRI-FM.
Bob Hudson may be crusty, but he knows radio.
KyXy’s Charlie Quinn. Thanks Charlie.
Cliff Albert at KOGO. Even in tough spots, fair and balanced.
Sonny West, Susan DeVincent and traffic ace Kevin Dean at 96.5 FM.
Sam Bass and the “Greener”, Gene Knight.
Jim McInnes. He didn’t play music. He tracked wax and talked about it. San Diego needs JM on the air, and that’s the fact Jack.
Chris Cantore’s great touch in the morning at 91X, along with Jennifer White.
Cindy Pace who promises cookies for everyone on her return to air.
A.J.’s Playhouse at Channel 933. Going strong with A.J., Hula and company.
760 KFMB reinvented itself to the right side of the political dial as the FM side of the house dropped hot AC for Jack FM.
Talk show host Stacy Taylor for staying true to his beliefs at San Diego AM 1700.
Chuck Buell for his words of wisdom.
Mark Larson for giving this web site exclusives through out the years and also being a mentor on all things San Diego radio.
The advertisers of SDRadio: MyServer.org, RickBroRadio.com and the AnimalCenter.org.
(This is not an exclusive list, please no brow-beating the writer!)
Mainly SDRadio is readers like you, who are listening from the outside and want to take a peek behind the the radio curtain. Only Randy Dotinga at the North County Times continues a weekly radio column in print. I’m told via email that the paper and this web site gives the radio fan the info they need or a venue to ask questions.
(Meet Elvis Bo Jangles, a Yorkshire-terrier mix. He is a rescue dog I retrieved last year from Lancaster. After living in a crate for eight months waiting for adoption, he had free reign of the house after he selected me. At 12-years old, no one wanted to adopt him because of his age and somewhat frail condition. He has given nothing but un-conditional love back. Just like his master, he has a bit of gray hair, limps; but enjoys the simple things in life.
Elvis is starting down the path to the Rainbow Bridge. The last 11 months with him has been nothing short of special.
When considering your next pet, please look at abandoned dogs, especially those who are seasoned. A good place to start in San Diego is at AnimalCenter.org.)
Thank you for being here, and See YOU on the radio!. Updates as they happen with regular reports on Monday and Thursday.

Chip Franklin was denied last Friday in his quest to consume 4,000 kilocalories at the KOGO studios. Cliff Albert writes about Chip’s quest: “He didn’t make it..could not handle all of it..was ready explode after about 2,000 calories.”
Chip wanted to eat like Olympic super star, Michael Phelps.
As the food settled down during the morning broadcast at KOGO, Chip “went golfing after the show to work it off!” Cliff adds.
Pictured are some of the dishes that awaited Chip — the tasty bytes of headphones/radio desert were not included in the breakfast quest.
~~
Leo Laporte, heard on KOGO Sunday afternoon, talked about the digital broadcast future. While the cut off date for analog television is early next year, he also indicated that it is a matter of time before AM and FM face the same future: analog will be out, and pure digital will be in. He predicts that shortly HDRadio will come down in price and the availability of radios will be more common.
In a related note, the company behind the standard for HDRadio is pushing to have a power increase on the FM side. Currently, the HDRadio broadcasts are about ten percent of the present effective radiated power (ERP). For example, Star 94.1’s HDRadio broadcast is about 10,000 watts. So the reach and depth of reception is limited. The FCC has been asked to permit broadcasters to raise the HDRadio broadcast power levels.

The KFI tower, a landmark on the Orange County / Los Angeles County line has returned. It’s a bit shorter, but with the top hat, promises to bring the grand lady back at a full 50,000 watts. KFI’s dominance includes the Inland Empire, San Diego, and the LA/Orange County market.
The tower was built in 13-days after a four-year delay. The “new” tower has a high intensity strobe lighting to aid pilots from Fullerton or those flying near by. The tower is near the 5-freeway and the 91, barely in LA County.

Mary Ayala writes, “If you’re a fan of Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, starting Monday for a month, you’ll find “Delana’s Dirty Pizza” featured on the menu. Delana’s creation was judged the winner last night during a charity cook-off at the new Sammy’s location in La Mesa. The proceeds from her pizza will benefit the three branches of the East County YMCA. (Delana pictured with Clear Channel traffic ace Cal Walker)
The Star 94.1 personality competed with other radio and TV personalities. Mary adds, “by far, her Cajun style pie was the judge’s favorite!”
Delana writes, “Try my pizza!!!! All the monies raised from the sales of the special pizza will benefit the East County Family YMCA. They have three branches in East County – the newly renovated Davis Y in La Mesa , Cameron Y in Santee and the McGrath Y in Rancho San Diego.
The money raised will be used to build strong kids, families and communities throughout East County. Plus, it helps San Diegans that are in need to be able to use the EC YMCA facilities for programs for the entire family. YMCA’s are about family and community. Since it’s inception in 1989, an integral part of the Sammy’s philosophy to provide strong support to local communities with annual donations to many charitable organizations ranging from neighborhood school drives to larger non-profits in every community they have a location.”

Maybe Chip Franklin, the KOGO morning show host should ask himself if he’s doing a reverse Arrested Intelligence!! Chip will be consuming a 4,000 kilocalorie meal in the studios. Normally the morning mouth is talking with the Wall Street Journal, bantering with LaDona Harvey, or taking on TV Barn’s Aaron Barnhart.
He’ll consume what mega-Olympian Michael Phelps does in a single meal. No word if he’ll bring a bigger belt with him.

Conservative talk-show host, Glenn Beck brings his summer political tour to the Palomar Starlight Theater at Pala Casino Spa & Resort on Friday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m. Host of the nationally syndicated radio show, the Glenn Beck Program, and his own daily show on CNN Headline News, Glenn Beck puts a comedic twist on current events and issues facing Americans today. He is author of two books, “An Inconvenient Book – Real Solutions to the World’s Biggest Problems and “The Real America – Message from the Heart & Heartland.”
Glenn Beck will be joined by 760 KFMB AM San Diego talk show host, Rick Roberts, with musical performances by San Diego-based rockabilly band, Hot Rod Lincoln. For over six years, Hot Rod Lincoln has entertained audiences with their 1950’s retro sound. They’ve won several awards including the San Diego Music Award for best roots/rockabilly/swing band.

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your broadcast day! Next week starts the Ninth Year of Radio Reports. See YOU on the radio today and when news breaks.

Mark Larson, morning talk show host at San Diego AM 1700 has a way with words. With all the vast years in San Diego, Mark has never choked on air. However, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was in town recently, the California Governor took the opportunity.
Mark writes: “OK, it was just the Governor goofing off on Tuesday night in Fairbanks Ranch.” Mark was emceeing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Prop 11 campaign for redistricting the state. Shortly before the invitation-only event began, photographer Paul Nestor asked Mark “wouldn’t you like a fun photo for your website?” The Governator decided to join the action, at Larson’s surprise, by putting him in a headlock worthy of a cheesy WWE event.
Despite disagreeing on many issues, Mark and the Governor have become good friends in recent years, with the 1700AM morning show host emceeing many events for the Boss in Sacramento, LA and San Diego. Schwarzenegger is expected to make another of his frequent appearances on the Larson show this week.
Things got more civil when the Governator challenged Larson to arm wrestling. No official word yet on the winner (waiting for late night voting precincts in Florida). (Photos by Paul Nestor)

This weekend XM Satellite subscribers will have the chance to listen to KCBQ on channel 6. The oldies channel is featuring the top forty giant through scoped air checks, commercials and newscasts. 60’s on 6 “Sonic Sound Salutes” continue as we re-create great 60’s radio stations across America. XM Radio’s Terry ” Motormouth” Young transforms the 60s on 6 into these great stations every Friday, with their original jingles, DJs, and local happenings. See Randy Dotinga’s write up at the North County Times. Note: the event will be on Friday, not Saturday.
Also noted: with the two companies combined, expect programming shifts. Duplicate channels — such as the 60s on 6 on XM and its Sirius equal, will soon combine. The company president is promoting the cost savings to the Wall Street crowd as the stock price took a hit after the official combination a couple of weeks ago.

Woody and Wilcox left sunny San Diego and headed north to Alaska. Striking their own kind of gold on the radio, they have captured the Anchorage market. While they did survive a bit of heat earlier this year, they continue to be at the top of the market. Morning Mouth magazine has given them front cover status.
Previously they were teamed up together at 103.7 Planet FM. Since moving to Alaska, Wilcox has settled down, while Woody has been seen catching salmon in streams and then eating them raw. (That’s the story I’m told of, Woody.)
Talented San Diego-based story teller Steve Poltz graced the airwaves last week as he was prepping for his Saturday night show in Solana Beach. Only Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw let the true-wonder and genius of him perform. In a no-holds approach, Steve topped his David Cassidey story. So classic, Chainsaw told Dave if the bit isn’t on the Best Of CD for 2008 “I quit!” Let’s hope it doesn’t go to that extreme, but when Steve was at KPRI, five minutes did not do him justice with Oz Medina. Clearly, the man who tell stories with his guitar needs a full twenty-plus minutes.
San Diego Jack’s morning host Monique took a group of lady listeners to the track last Sunday. During the day, the group decided to meet up on Tuesday in Oceanside — and Monique did that. She ventured to to a sports bar near the 5 freeway and entertained for a couple of hours. She told me that this is part of the fun, part of getting to know her audience, and just unwinding with her friends. Thanks Monique for being gracious in your time and entertainment!!!

Major street buzz about Air America returning to the airwaves in San Diego. As the deal is being firmed up, expect a ground swell in street buzz. This is a Stay Tuned item.
Thank you for reading today’s edition! See you here early next week for the next report; breaking news as it happens right here. Thank you! Enjoy the weekend. Has anyone heard of this missing voice in the San Diego market?

Former Programming Assistant for 91X/ Channel 933 Loretta Emery checks in: “My nephew had a stroke on July 18 and was paralyzed on his left side, with minimal paralysis of his face. He had an emergency microscopic craniotomy and was in ICU for three days. He was then moved to a private room on the trauma floor at Mercy hospital for over a week.
“Thanks to my friends at UL’s management, I was able to get the lead singer of Unwritten Law in to see my 20-year old nephew last Wednesday, July 30. He stayed and played Joey’s requests for an hour and a half! Gave Joey UL t-shirts, sweatshirt, guitar pick and autographed some things for him.
“Joey was transferred last Friday to Scripp’s Encinitas Rehabilitation Center and has full movement on the left side of his face, is able to raise his left leg and pull his knee to his chest. He is also able to raise his left arm and wiggle his fingers when he concentrates hard enough. He still has a ways to go before he makes a complete recovery, but Russo’s visit definitely inspired him.”

Star 94.1’s Jeff and Jer, have been on the air in San Diego since 1998. Starting at Y-95, the only producer for the showgram has been Tommy Sablan. Laura Cain joined the group in in 1991 when they were on B100. Randy Hoag became part of the family in 1993. Delana Bennett rounded out the family in 2006.
The station will be throwing a get together soon, and the only way to be there is to win tickets at Star 94.1.
Coming up Thursday on RichBroRadio, a salute to the flick American Graffitti, on its 35th anniversary week. Rich writes that “With so many great songs I thought it’d be fun to feature ‘em in twin spins beginning at 5 a.m.!”
KPBS-FM is home of A Way With Words, Saturday and Sunday. A Way with Words is a lively hour-long public radio show about language, on the air since 1998. Author Martha Barnette and dictionary editor Grant Barrett take calls about slang, grammar, old sayings, word origins, regional dialects, family expressions, and speaking and writing well.
Last weekend, the latest episode concentrated on the ever-popular topic of words people mispronounce on purpose, the pronunciation of “beaux arts,” and the history of the term “Jody” as it is used in the military. Grant even chants a bit of a Jody cadence. Take a listen here:
The online-only mini-cast bonuses continues. These snippets of the show give the listener a good “taste” of what the program is. Last week, a caller wanted the hosts to figure out where she is from by just listening to her voice! Find out how the pundits did:

The long-delayed and twice-fallen KFI-AM tower is taking a vertical shape. As the re-re-building continues near the LA/Orange County line, just north of the 5-freeway, the LA-based talk station is broadcasting from a temporary location. When the new antenna is in place, the 50,000 watt blowtorch returns, and is expected to be in HDRadio as well.
The original radio tower was struck by an airplane several years ago. After a review by various government agencies, the go-ahead was given to rebuild. In March, the tower was near completion when it fell again due to a “single-point-of-failure”.
See more pictures at K6RIX.com.
The new tower will be 75-feet shorter. It will incorporates a 50-foot diameter top hat that effectively increasing the electrical length of the antenna/tower. The new tower will have flashing lights and other devices to aid airport traffic.
Thank you for stopping by the SDRadio web site for today. More news as hit happens, right here! See YOU on the radio!
