roger hedgecockWith the national election less than 100 days away, KOGO’s resident political expert Roger Hedgecock will be hitting the campaign trail. He’ll be reporting from both conventions and also be holding elected officials in check in September. Executive Producer Jimmy Valentine checks in, “We hope you’ll come along for the Hold Their Feet To The Fire event September 9th - 14th which includes the anniversary of 911-01 and the Values Voter event at the Family Research Council. Details below. We’re hoping to bring as many as 100 or more of Roger’s listeners to lobby Congress to secure our borders and to send that same message to the presidential candidates.”

Roger hosts his San Diego based show on KOGO weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. As the resident Radio Mayor for the city, he talks about all things local and national. On Saturday, Roger’s show is heard on over 60-stations in the U.S.

On-line hosts are hinting of a change, and obviously, the synergy of a combined company is why XM and Sirius have merged. What is not known is the final programming line-up. Over the past few days, Rollye James and Leo Laporte have indicated that they don’t know if their show will survive the eventual combination. In the merger proposal, duplicate music channels were going to be combined. What is not clear are the programming choices by now-private Clear Channel Communications. An investor in XM Radio, Clear Channel had a unique arrangement of providing music and talk programming.

It is not clear if products such as WLW-AM, America’s Talk, Talk Radio, Nashville, KISS, MIX, Sunny and WSIX, will survive the transformation.

The “new” company will offer consumers new packages in audio entertainment, including the first-ever a la carte programming option in subscription media. In addition to two a la carte options, the new packages will include: “Best of Both,” giving subscribers the option to access certain programming from the other network; discounted packages; and tailored packages including “Mostly Music” and “News, Talk and Sports.” The first of the new packages will be available in the early fall. Stay Digitally and Skyward Tuned.

HDRadio: Tom Webster of Edison Research told AllAccess.com, “Programming is a regional crap shoot of varying technology. The industry has to create value through the creation of strong, passionate brands that may be augmented by music, but stand for more than ‘one great song after another.”

AllAccess also reported that there are more HDRadios in the $100 range. The web site also reported:

* More than 1,700 HD RADIO stations are on the air in the U.S.
* More than 800 new HD2 or HD3 multicast channels are on the air.

The new standard was the second most advertised on radio during July, right behind Wal*Mart. However, the lagging issue: the consumer, despite years of being pummeled with HDRadio, still doesn’t know what it is.

Here’s a thought: Train the sales staff on what HDRadio is, make sure the in-house display can receive HDRadio, and do something that has been proven: show that content is king and offer something that will be the “gotta have it”.
