The KFI tower is built and the top hat on. Today during the 5 o’clock hour, the station will power up to 50,000 watts from its single antenna near the LA/Orange county line.
The station’s dominance in Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire also has a significant reach into San Diego county. The station counts in the Clear Channel Communications tally for San Diego.
The tower fell when an airplane hit the structure. Then, an re-build fail earlier this year as key component had a failure. This time, in August, the tower was built in 13-days. The new antenna has a high-intensity strobe to aid pilots flying from Fullerton.
The station broadcast from a nearby auxiliary tower that had the station at 25,000 watts. It was during this time, KFI reached a milestone that no other station may never achieve: KFI is the most listened to AM station in the U.S., beating out full-power WABC in New York.
The tower is near the 5-freeway and the 91 just past Knott’s Berry Farm exit. (Photo/graphic from Google Earth, click to enlarge.)
