Linda Irwin, Traffic Director at Channel 933, has retired from the station and Clear Channel Communications. For 12 years she held the post. She is the wife of San Diego great Shotgun Tom Kelly.
Jimmy Steele, Program Director for the top rated station, wrote about her, “I will miss Linda greatly. I know that we have a great traffic team, but I will miss Linda’s passion and knowledge of radio and radio programming. She is not only a great traffic director, but a broadcaster and an historian. She was infected with the “radio bug” years ago, and has lived in some of the same great (and not so great) radio markets as yours truly. She will continue to be a friend as well as a great “radio friend”.”
Jimmy adds: “All the best Linda! Although I hate to see you go, I wish you and Tom more time together!”
“Who has been here for 12 years, spent 40 plus years in broadcasting, always dedicated and committed to her job and the radio industry, hard working, conscientious, everyone loves and should, cares so much about about the people she works with and has decided to retire and devote her time to the community as a volunteer?” asks Karen Boyle. “Who else could it be but Linda Irwin whose last day was on October 31st”
Karen, the Director of Traffic for Clear Channel in San Diego also wrote, “In the Traffic Department we are going to miss Linda like crazy! She has been a valuable and vital part of the department, someone we can always count on, not only as someone who does an exemplary job in the department but also someone who is totally unselfish, works for the team, and always ready and willing to help anyone, anytime whenever necessary.”

Halloween is a fun time for children and adults but it can be a bewitching time for our precious pets. Plus the switch back to Standard time can create a “spooky” situation for kids and critters. Helen Woodward Animal Center wants the only thing your dog or cat to suffer this Halloween is the indignity of wearing a silly costume and offer several safety tips.
If you are putting your pup or puss in a costume, make sure it fits properly, doesn’t obstruct seeing, hearing or breathing, and that it has no small pieces that could be broken off which could be swallowed.
Keep Halloween candy wrappers along with candy or chocolate out of paw’s reach. Chocolate can be fatal to a dog or cat. Remember, too to keep pets away from burning candles such as those placed in jack-o-lanterns. A flickering flame to a curious pet can prove harmful. Pets are not flame retardant and can become seriously burned.
Keeping your pets safe this Halloween is no spooky matter. Dogs can become frightened with costumes and may tend to bite young (or old) goblins alike. They may also become fearful and run away. While cats are most at risk, Helen Woodward Animal Center advises all pet owners to keep their animals indoors in a quiet room to prevent them from being frightened by loud noises or accidentally running off when the front door is opened or closed. Each year, animal shelters across the country are flooded with calls immediately before or after Halloween from pet owners whose cats and dogs have been injured or have disappeared.
Also keep in mind that the time change can be confusing for your pets. People understand what’s going on. Pets just know that their dinner is late. Be patient while they adjust. Helen Woodward Animal Center wishes you and your pets a safe and Happy Halloween!

It is great to read about station pride, especially with local operations. In Wednesday’s report, 1170 KCBQ was overlooked. The station is rolling out with local, state and national coverage all day.
Ron Babiarz writes about 1170’s coverage: “The absolute best election coverage will be on 1170 AM KCBQ next Tuesday! Hugh Hewitt starts the action on his national show from 3pm-6pm with full coverage of the presidential returns as well
as an incredible myriad of guests providing compelling insight! In 2004, while the other national media was waiting for returns…Hugh went on the air and told his listeners that “Karl Rove just told Bush he (Rove) could deliver Ohio to the President…and thus the election…according to my sources!” Hugh Hewitt is unsurpassed when it comes to national
presidential election coverage!”
Ron continues: “Then beginning at about 7pm…KCBQ will have Jane Morton and our own Rick Amato live from election central in San Diego with comprehensive coverage of the local returns as well as interviews with the winners and
the losers!”
Ron echos the pride at the station in conclusion: “In short, AM 1170 KCBQ will be the place to be next Tuesday for the best election coverage in San Diego radio!”
~~~
Program Director and mid-day host Jim Richards, missing from the KGB airwaves has left the station. “After much thought and consideration, I have decided to leave CCSD to explore other career options as Jen and I are relocating to LA in the near future. I’ve enjoyed my time here in San Diego and wanted to take a moment to thank you all and wish each of you the best.”
Smart phones are reaching out: The deployment of the smart phone has applications that ends the need for a built in radio receiver. With an application download, full-stereo reception of FM and high-quality sounding AM feeds are available.
Recent additions have included KOGO, San Diego 1700 AM, and internet-based RichBroRadio. While the application may have a low cost, the world will open up.
Also, Clear Channel Communications has an applet that will work on the iPhone. On the list include: KFI, KLAC, and 102.7 KISS. Other CCU stations are being added, and it is expected to include stations from San Diego.
AOL Radio continues to feature CBS radio stations, including KyXy, and Radio Sophie. Need a quick fix for LA? Hear KNX, KEARTH 101 and others from the basin. Added bonus: Shotgun Tom spinning oldies in the afternoon on KEARTH.
In all, the long-distance DXing is getting easier with smart phones, and after the investing of the phone, the costs are minimal.
CBS has opened talks with AFTRA and wants to increase voice-tracking at stations in the chain. The proposal with the union has CBS Radio to have the right to voice track all programming on certain formats.
The formats include Adult Contemporary, Smooth Jazz, Adult Hits, and Urban. CBS’ radio division wants no restrictions on voice tracking at stations. Also, the proposal covers AFTRA stations nationwide.
What effect, if any in San Diego, remains uncertain. KyXy and Radio Sophie remain local and live. Here’s hoping that the local bosses keep it that way.
~~
Phil Manning has left alternative rocker 91X, according to AllAcces.com. The standard reason: budget cuts.
~~
The San Diego Chargers broadcast crew proved themselves of the last two weeks. Josh Lewin Hank Bauer did yeoman’s work while at Buffalo. When an electrical problem at the stadium essentially cut the power — the radio broadcast crew did some quick thinking and did the play-by-play via their mobile phones. Two lines into the Rock 105.3’s studios and Josh and Hank were for a majority of the first half, the connection for fans to hear the game.
Likewise, last weekend’s game took them to London, England. The prized stadium across the pond has everything except broadcast booths. Hank and Josh were set up in the stands and broadcast the game.
Added bonus: the pre and post game show on Rock 105.3 has an edgy feel and pulls no punches. The game can also be heard an AM 570, KLAC from Los Angeles, and 103.3 KTMQ in Temecula.
~~
Chip Franklin at KOGO combines a morning show with good advice from the Wall Street Journal, local news, and test the intelligence of San Diego. Ear-witness Chip’s latest adventures in good broadcasting at Arrested Intelligence. His target this week: How do you get in to Electoral College?
Noted: The first sign that winter is coming: Chip is growing hair back on his head. Just like the wolly worms, it is predicted to be a cold in December and January.
~~
Would you vote for Hilary? The mid-day host at 94/9 is about the music and more. Hilary, who was previously heard at Star 94.1, and 91X, has an easy fit at the alt-rocker in San Diego. She’s surrounded by Hansen and Tommy and Halloran during daytime hours.
~~
Next Tuesday will be a big day across the country. History will be made, and your vote is just one step in the process when the national and local elections steers the political path. Locally, stations are gearing up. KPBS will give wall-to-wall coverage all day and all night. 760KFMB, calling itself the “official election station”, promises to do the same with sister-tie in with the News 8.
KOGO will also press the national networks and send their reporters out to gather the news on the returns.
Enter in San Diego 1700 AM under the guidance Mark Larson. San Diego 1700 will again provide continuous election coverage on Tuesday night. The station teams up with KUSI-TV, CNN and NBC Radio for wide-ranging coverage through the day, and expanded play-by-play when the polls close.
Stacy Taylor will have the first trends across the nation from 3-6PM, followed by non-stop coverage of national, state and local races. Mark Larson will again be a featured political analyst on KUSI television on election night.
Mark Larson and famed “Original 7″ astronaut Scott Carpenter, on the set of “Star Trek” at the San Diego Air & Space Museum before last Saturday night’s annual Aerospace Hall of Space Induction Ceremony. Carpenter was among the inductees. Larson, MC for the event, also serves on the Board of Directors for the museum.
Mark is in the hot seat tomorrow with Rambo and the Terminator: Larson is the Master of Ceremonies at Thursday special invitation-only dinner with Governor Schwarzenegger and special guest Sylvester Stallone in La Jolla. The fundraiser is supporting the Redistricting Initiative (Prop 11) on Tuesday’s election ballot.
Smart mobile phones can take on world-wide radio broadcasting with an inexpensive application. WunderRadio gives you more San Diego based radio stations, and offers internet only ones like Hayseed Radio. The application, released Oct. 6, is priced at about $6.
The program for iPhone has similar applications for other smart phones. There are no geographic restrictions, all continents — including Antarctica — are covered. Want to hear New York’s WABC? No problem. BBC Radio IV from London, or Radio Virgin? Easy to find! A small public station from western Kansas? KANZ is there.
The stations from the San Diego area include KOGO, KGB, KPBS-FM, KSON, KiFM, and others. There is an interface to request stations to be added and reviews at the Apple website indicate the software engineers will do that.
WunderRadio comes from the same folks that have Wunderground. The web site is known for its unique weather forecasts. WundeRadio uses the iPhone’s GPS capability to locate nearby radio stations. These include NOAA weather radio streams and police and fine scanners. RadioTime guide provides a quick and easy way to find radio content from thousands of stations across the world. Listeners can browse by location or format to see what is available. Users can build a list of their favorite stations providing instant access to a personalized directory.
More information including which phones are supported are at RadioTime.com.
Michael Reagan (right with San Diego’s Mark Larson) will continue to be on the radio. He tells SDRadio: “I am going to be announcing a new syndication deal, in the coming days. It will represent a real opportunity to take this show to places it hasn’t yet gone and to reach listeners who will be new to the Michael Reagan Show.
“It will be regarded by some as bold and maybe even a little risky, but I have never been one to play it safe whether it was shaking up the DC establishment, hosting my show, setting world records racing powerboats, or talking about my very unique life story.
Michael has best wishes from Roger Hedgecock who will take over his time slot early next year. “Radio America has chosen to go with a very experienced local talk host who is intimately familiar with Southern California’s most pressing issues– and I wish them well in all of their endeavors.”
AM 600 KOGO and Radio America have announced that starting on January 5, the first three hours of the Roger Hedgecock Show, heard 3pm-7pm weekdays, will be nationally syndicated across the country.
The show will continue to originate from the AM 600 KOGO studios and will continue to include late-breaking San Diego area news and traffic updates as well as Hedgecock’s commentary on local issues.
The fourth hour of the show, from 6pm-7pm, will expand its focus on the important local topics of the day so that his number one ranked San Diego County audience can continue to rely on the Radio Mayor for the latest in local news and politics.
“I want to assure my listeners that we are committed to addressing the issues that are important to all San Diego County residents,” said Roger.
“Now radio talk listeners will have the chance to hear every weekday why Roger has been the leading radio talk show host in San Diego for more than 20 years,” commented Cliff Albert, Program Director at AM 600 KOGO.
The one-hour window from 6 to 7 p.m., Roger will focus on San Diego, has KOGO mostly syndicated programming throughout its weekday broadcast schedule. That would leave Chip Franklin as the only local and live show in the mornings.
Roger has received numerous local and nation broadcasting awards, including being nominated twice for the NAB Marconi Award.
It is expected that Roger’s Saturday program will end in mid-November. That program was sent out to stations by Syndicated Solutions.
Roger is replacing Michael Reagan at the Radio America Network. Michael is heard locally on San Diego 1700 AM. Radio America is home of G. Gordon Liddy, Doug Stephan, and other conservative hosts.
Star 94.1 dropped the top-rated afternoon drive of Rick and Jen yesterday. In a move that was partly spurred by economics (as in paying the on-air hosts money), Clear Channel’s puzzle palace continued to shuttle radio in the market.
Hitman Haze takes over the duties as music director that was formerly held by Jen Sorensen. Haze’s duties will expand in San Diego: He will continue to program Channel 933 and take on the duties of assistant program director and music director at Star 94.1.
Joining Channel 933 will be Sisanie. She is mid-days at KISS-FM in Los Angeles, and through the magic of voice-tracking, be heard mid-days at 93.3 FM.
Meanwhile, Rick tells SDRadio that he “loves San Diego” and hopes to find a position here in the market. Likewise, in a separate phone call, Jen echoed Rick’s desire to stay in the market.
For what ever the reason why CCU-SD dropped the team, it wasn’t about ratings. Jen and Rick were among the top in billing and listeners at the 100,000 watt station. (Pictured: Hitman Haze)
Jen can be reached at her email address of jensorensen@cox.net
Radio is having a rough time. So are newspapers. The fifth estate are going through something new, something borrowed, and something that is making them blue.
New: The internet — while approaching 20-plus years, remains the new kid on the block and is delivering content faster and for a price that all can afford.
Borrowed: Media pundits are saying that radio, and newspapers are on borrowed time.
Blue: Bean counters are making financial decisions that has experts wondering who is guiding the ship. Some cuts are needed, but cutting proven talent does not make sense. Have you priced radio stocks? Salem, the owners of KPRZ and KCBQ dropped below a buck yesterday. Some national companies are facing delisting by NASDAQ or NYSE.
What ever happens, the spoils of war may be broadcast stations on the inexpensive. Randy Michaels, currently with Tribune, is on the record to be hunting for stations. (Tribune owns KSWB-TV, the Fox station in San Diego.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another Saturday Night. Most Saturday nights, a number of San Diego and Los Angeles radio and tv people gather at Shotgun Tom Kelly’s pool party at his El Cajon home. Honored recently was Clear Channel production ace and Southern California radio legend, Jim Duncan.
Celebrating with Jim: former KOGO news anchor Jeff Prescott, Double X (XPRS) Sports Radio chief engineer Bill Lipis, Jim Duncan, KRTH’s Shotgun Tom Kelly, former KMPC dj and voiceover guy Neil Ross, legendary KCBQ overnight man Jack Vincent, ex-KRLA pd Mel Hall, former KCBQ pd Gary Allyn, San Diego dj Ron Shaw and former KCBQ dj Bill Martin. Cigars were smoked, tequila was sampled (by some) and many tall tales were told.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reception report: I journeyed to Cabo San Lucas last week and took my trusty C. Crane radio with me. It was no surprise that I could get KFI-AM 640 there loud and clear, along with KNX-AM 1070. Also joining the night skywaves was KOGO-AM, and XEPRS-AM 1090, and XEWW-AM 690. Also on the list was 1200 WOAI and KOA-AM 850.
Ex-patriots tell me before the internet was common, AM radio was a news-line that had many listening to KNX, and other news outlets to keep in touch. Now, with high-speed connections available, some stations were available on the ‘net. (Clear Channel does not send the stream to computer IP address outside of the U.S.)
