Smart mobile phones can take on world-wide radio broadcasting with an inexpensive application. WunderRadio gives you more San Diego based radio stations, and offers internet only ones like Hayseed Radio. The application, released Oct. 6, is priced at about $6.
The program for iPhone has similar applications for other smart phones. There are no geographic restrictions, all continents — including Antarctica — are covered. Want to hear New York’s WABC? No problem. BBC Radio IV from London, or Radio Virgin? Easy to find! A small public station from western Kansas? KANZ is there.
The stations from the San Diego area include KOGO, KGB, KPBS-FM, KSON, KiFM, and others. There is an interface to request stations to be added and reviews at the Apple website indicate the software engineers will do that.
WunderRadio comes from the same folks that have Wunderground. The web site is known for its unique weather forecasts. WundeRadio uses the iPhone’s GPS capability to locate nearby radio stations. These include NOAA weather radio streams and police and fine scanners. RadioTime guide provides a quick and easy way to find radio content from thousands of stations across the world. Listeners can browse by location or format to see what is available. Users can build a list of their favorite stations providing instant access to a personalized directory.
