KPRi-FM’s “Create Your Commercial” contest, has invited the public to make and submit 30-second TV commercials for what is likely San Diego’s first consumer-generated advertising campaign.
Ten spots were submitted and posted at KPRiFM.com, where the listening audience, KPRi staff and three celebrity judges selected the final four.
Final-round voting is now on-going until Monday at 1:02 p.m. The winning commercial will earn $1,000 when it is announced at KPRI’s sold-out Annual Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 11th.
You can see the final four spots at KPRiFM.com – and also hear the contestants explain their commercials and celebrity judges’ critiques of those spots.
Maybe KPRi’s support for local videographers can have a positive impact on one or all of them. After all, the station’s early support for San Diego-nurtured music stars, including Jewel, Jason Mraz and Tristan Prettyman may have played some small role in their respective successes. Those hoping so include the four finalists in the “Create Your Commercial” contest:
• Carlsbad residents Russ & Diane Coletti, “Bongo” (Russ’ band had one of MTV’s first videos in 1984.
Today Russ is an artist that paints with a paper towel rather than a brush. From Colettiart.com: Coletti is an emerging “outsider Artist” (click website for definition) www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/outsider_art, Artist from Encinitas, California who started painting in June of 2007 at the age of 54. After trying his hand at typical brush usage he decided that he was looking for a different look. A new and fresh feel without the constraints of a brush. He uses paper towels and Acrylics. In the first 16 months he sold 57 paintings. He is now in some of the most prestigious Galleries in Southern California. Contact him at his E Mail address to request more photos of current works for sale.
• Mission Valley resident Michael Ilacqua, “Love Her Madly” (Michael was in cast of The Amazing Race, season three.)
• Canyon Crest high school student Jeff Wolff “Defined” (Jeff owns a videographer business and wants the dough to help pay for college.)
• Escondido resident Alexis Grenier “You Got Me!” (Alexis sang the national anthem at Padres game, has appeared on Gospel Music Time television and recently won first prize in the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Young artist competition)
While KPRi-FM may have solicited unknowns to produce its new TV commercial, there are some Hollywood heavyweights evaluating submissions; among the celebrity judges are Michael Gross, executive producer of films including Ghostbusters (for which he designed the iconic “no ghosts” logo). Gross is currently living and working in Oceanside, where he is with the exhibition department and a curator for the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA). Also weighing in on KPRi’s TV commercial contest is Steve Poltz, the USD graduate credited with discovering Jewel, with whom he co-wrote “You Were Meant For Me.” This song is noted the Guinness Book of World Records for longest chart run of a single. Finally, Ric Militi, marketing guru of concerts featuring Bonnie Raitt, Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, Randy Travis, Billy Idol, Chris Isaak, The Temptations and Gipsy Kings at Valley View Casino.
