“They just don’t make songs like The Walrus plays anymore. I can’t wait to play the hits,” said Anthony.

“Our main focus will be on quality and we’re going to give a lot of bands that don’t have a chance to be heard on the radio that opportunity,” said Szmanda, best known to audiences as Greg Sanders on ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’. “We want to be playing everything from indie rock to hip-hop to classic rock to soul to dance rock.”

The wildly diverse group of artists already being featured include Radiohead, the Ramones, My Morning Jacket, the Rolling Stones, Grandmaster Flash, Johnny Cash, Hot Chip, Prince, the Beatles, T Rex, Al Green, Jane’s Addiction,, Daft Punk, Pink Floyd, the Kinks, Bjork, the Who, Arcade Fire, Ray Charles, the Verve, Air, Otis Redding, Pharcyde, Velvet Underground, the Clash, Pavement, the Roots, The Police, David Bowie, and Kraftwerk,.

Welcome to SDRadio for Thursday, April 24, 2008

This report in stereo, where available.

If it relates to the business, Russ T. Nailz, and Sully are talking about it on the air. With their topical, laid back, and comic commentary of goings on in the business world, Sully and Russ ‘T’ aren’t only thinking outside the box-they didn’t even know there was a box! Especially with visits from the likes of Gazillionaire Kris Skrinak, The Finance Babe, The Mortgage Dude and Ball Boy Kyle!! Add live call-ins from educated listeners of all ages, live in-studio guests, and even local rock n’ roll bands, and you’ve got the most engaging virtual bar room on the internet radio dial. So pull up a bar stool, pour a tall frosty one with the boys weekdays on the Business TalkRadio Network.

Russ is a San Diego based comedian and has been heard on 91X. Sully gained air experience at 103.7 The Planet. Sully tells SDRadio that the show is heard coast to coast and can be heard locally on KCEO via the Business Talk Radio network. Visit their web site at BigBizShow.com.

Two weeks ago, Scott Fybush and I journeyed to Baja on a romp through legendary radio and television antennas. Scott noted that the call letters for 690 AM have changed to XEWW. Fred Cantu, a television journalist based in Austin, Texas writes, “The XEWW calls have some history. That was the call for the shortwave repeater of XEW, the W flagship in Mexico City. XEW no longer transmits on shortwave.”

<img src='http://sdradio.net/__oneclick_uploads/2008/04/kcbq_1969-06-13_2.thumbnail.jpg' align='left' hspace='5 alt='kcbq_1969-06-13_2.jpg' />Neil Ross writes about Bob Collins. The legendary radio host is being inducted into the radio hall of fame. “Bob did afternoons on KCBQ in ‘69 and ‘70. Those were the days when KCBQ had an unheard of $10,000 cash-call contest. That combined with Bob’s engaging wit and energy meant in some rating periods he would get better than a thirty share! Of course, he’s better known for the twenty plus years he spent on WGN Chicago, the last ten or so in morning drive.”

Mark Larson adds a photo: The picture is a “1984 blast from the past, the start of our friendship that lasted until his tragic plane accident.” Mark adds, he almost got me to move to WGN …three times over the years!

San Diego’s newest music station is streaming on-line. Sample the Walrus at WalrusFM.com.

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your internet travels today. See YOU on the radio and here for breaking news!

Leo Laporte gets technical on KOGO every Sunday afternoon starting at noon. The syndicated host is heard nationwide on XM satellite and also on the flagship station of KFI. Leo is a hands-on tech adviser and has one of the largest fan-base for podcasts.

SignOn Radio continues with newspaper staff. The line up starts at noon and is streamed world-wide from SignOnSanDiego.com. The leading paper in the region is also feeling the effect of the cutbacks in advertisement. In the last six months, the newspaper has made buy outs to staff members. In the opinion section of Monday’s paper, newspaper editor Karin Winner wrote about the diminishing expectations of the paper. “We can’t be a newspaper of record anymore.” That leaves a wide gap in coverage if that is the paper’s position.
San Diego 1700’s Mark Larson is the master of ceremonies at the Christian Management Association’s annual convention in Dallas, Texas (this Sunday through Thursday). The event is the largest of its kind, with over 2,000 attendees representing some of the most influential ministries (World Vision and others) and mega-churches, as well as key successful businesses across the U.S. He’ll be hosting a variety of events each day, featuring key speakers including management guru Ken Blanchard and others.

Bobbie, who can be heard on classic rock 101.5 KGB has drawing power. Check her art out at BlondeOnDuty.com. A portion of the sale will go to animal welfare groups.

Update: The Radio Hall Of Fame has announced its selection for the nominees. Included: Dick Whittinghill, primarily based at KMPC in Los Angeles. WGN’s Bob Collins. Uncle Bobby was in the San Diego market.

Other nominees include: Art Bell for his overnight show Coast To Coast AM. Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Bob Costas, Charlie Tuna (KCBQ), and Gary Burbank.

See Radio Hall Of Fame’s web site for more info.
~~
Marlyn Hyder, the news anchor was heard on SignOn Radio Tuesday during the mid-day shift. This Friday, she joins her former co-worker, Mark Larson on San Diego AM 1700.

She is slated to join Mark in the 8 a.m., hour.

Also: The station on the extreme right side of the dial (and presenting all sides of the political spectrum) has entered an exclusive news partnership with the San Diego Business Journal. The agreement will expand 1700’s local business coverage and build both entities website content. The Journal’s reporters will also be heard occasionally on the new 1700AM and there will be more of a presence for the station in the newspaper, along with 24/7 info online. The companies also partner for several major local events throughout the year. In recent months, 1700AM has also added NBC Radio and CNN news to its information arsenal.

On the Mark: The morning host at the station, Mark Larson also expands his television horizons. As he stepped into the KUSI news booth last week, he continues to give local political commentary for the local news station. As the election year banter piles it deeper in the tube (and in high-def, too), expect Mark to even the swill out and set the record straight.
~~
Disposed host at KFI, John Ziegler will return to the radio next week. In an email, John stated that he’ll have a two hour show next week, heard in San Diego on AM 540. More details soon.
~~
Rob Worden checks in about his move north: ” I will be heading back to Sacramento and back to Clear Channel Radio. I will start there the middle of next week as their Director of Sales. Julie and I are thrilled to be headed home!” Rob is having a no-host get together next Monday.
~~
Woody & Wilcox got on the wrong side of the microphone. The former San Diego hosts call Alaska home. They took a local slang and twisted — and caused an outrage from local native Indian groups to the state, all calling for their ouster. The station, Fox 105 FM, suspended the duo for the time being. In turn, Woody and Wilcox will donate their salary to local Alaska charities.

The Clear Channel Communications station posted an apology and also said, ” We are confident that what was said was an isolated incident, and it in no way reflects the views of KBFX station personnel.”

See the local paper for more details.

John Lynch announced this morning at BCA:

“I am pleased to announce that this morning the Broadcast Company of the Americas launched a new exciting format on its 105.7 FM.

With the advent of 1090 AM going digital with HD radio, we find it redundant to offer XX Sports Radio on both 1090 AM and 105.7 FM.

After conducting extensive research, BCA identified a hits based format that will be a formidable competitor.

The Walrus 105.7 This morning at 9am, BCA launched “105.7, The Walrus”

The Walrus will feature the best of the San Diego Classic Hits combined with a contemporary, fun, music intensive presentation. Because the demographics are complimentary, the Padres will continue to be carried on both 1090 and 105.7. The Walrus will unfold over the air over the next two weeks as the music–only presentation will add personalities and features with the final Walrus ready to waddle on in early May.

As we all know, times are challenging right now. Many broadcast companies have engaged in layoffs, hiring freezes, and taken other “draconian” measures to cut expenses. At BCA, we are confident that the challenging times yield great opportunity. We want to present an exciting new venue for our partners and advertisers, to help overcome the challenges of the economy.

In addition to the on-air presentation of the Walrus, BCA will offer some exciting web-based opportunities to provide great value for our advertisers.

Finally, in both Noble Broadcast and BCA’s history, our companies have been trailblazers in terms of creating and presenting formats that have been top rated in their markets.

Stations such as KBCO, 91X, THE End, Magic 102, XTRA Sports, XX Sports Radio, and many others have been market and format leaders. BCA looks forward to adding the Walrus to this prestigious list of some of the most successful stations ever.
